Norm Macdonald spent his weekend tweeting at Lena Dunham for some reason

Whether you’re talking best stand-up comedians, best late-night talk show guests, or best Canadians, Norm Macdonald has got to be a part of the conversation. But what does a Norm Macdonald do on his time off, when he’s not being simply the best? Well, if you were to ask that question this weekend, the answer would be tweeting a bunch of snarky comments at Lena Dunham. Why? Seemingly, because he felt like it.

In each, teasing reply, Macdonald treats Dunham’s hyperbolic and/or half-joking tweets as if they are gravely serious proclamations. He then probes them for their true meaning, questioning Dunham’s intention, and constantly referring to her by the patronizing nickname, “Young Lena.” On the surface, his jokes are less of an indictment of Dunham’s Twitter presence and more of a dissection of how we all write on the social media platform, particularly our improper use of the word “literally” and our penchant for labored analogies.

Despite the clearly good-natured intention of Macdonald’s roasts, the comedian took the time to delete every single one of them the next morning for fear that Dunham might be offended and then sent her a preemptive apology. Dunham, who is undoubtedly used to reading criticism and snide remarks about herself on the internet, responded that she hadn’t seen any of the tweets but that he would have to try pretty hard to offend her. “I’ve got gator skin in this department,” she said.
