The Wonder | Official Trailer | Netflix

Netflix October 2When an 11-year-old girl appears to have survived four months of not eating thanks to divine miracles, a nurse (Florence Pugh) and a nun are sent to determine if, in fact, this is a Heavenly exception to medical science. is set in late 19th century Ireland, and in a heavily Catholic village, families that survived the 1861 famine (which in turn followed the Great Famine of the 1840s) might easily find inspiration in the idea of divine nutrition. Of course, that time and setting being what they are, there’s also plenty of space for women and children to get abused in the name of the all-powerful church. The script and its source novel come from Emma Donoghue, the author of Room, another tale of a young child finding wonder in an abusive environment. That’s not the only Oscar pedigree here: director Sebastian Lelio won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2017 for . The cast includes Tom Burke, Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones, and Elaine Cassidy. And in a self-conscious, Brechtian touch, Pugh flat out tells viewers at the start that this is a story, implying, perhaps, that anything can happen because this isn’t a documentary. Chances are it unfolds as the book does—though it’s up to you whether or not to read that first. [Luke Y. Thompson]

Can’t wait for Black Panther 2 so Marvel can tell us how the CIA only wants what is best for Africa so maybe all you real life Africans can stop your whining about all that bad stuff they did.

Yknow I had actually made it this far without glimpsing the new Black Panther costume. Thanks assholes. Next Throw up a header image of Iron Heart. Fuckin’ A.V. Club.

New Black Panther suit is in the trailers, bro.
Also, this is sitting on store shelves. Cope.

If you’re trying that hard not to be spoiled from anything in BPWF (and believe me, I’m familiar with the experience; as an experiment I spent an entire year going out of my way to avoid seeing or hearing anything from Rogue One before it came out), you need to stay off websites that cover movies. And probably the rest of the Internet.

    • labbla-av says:

The superhero in a superhero movie is not a spoiler. If you want to be that sheltered you should avoid movie websites, especially this close to a movie you want to know nothing about coming out.

Just when you thought Jennifer Lawrence was fated to be just another franchise widgetIt’s been a while since she was in a franchise film. Dark Phoenix would have been the last one.
Babel, Biutiful, Birdman, and The Revenant

That last one really sticks out as not starting with a “B”.

I’ll watch pretty much anything with airplanes in it.

I don’t know what’s weirder, putting Strange World and Spirited in the (others) category, or forgetting Glass Onion entirely.

there is also a new Benson/Moorhead movie coming out that I only just heard about “Something in the Dirt”–definitely something to be excited about if you caught The Endless.  Synchronic was pretty flawed (single people are disposable!) but had some fun conceptual sci-fi stuff, and by putting themselves front and center they’re kind of saying “We’re like Shane Carruth except we aren’t abusive dicks and we’re pretty fun!”

Nice, wasn’t aware of their new project. Big fan of their movies and their sort of “universe” (with Resolution and The Endless), Spring is another really fun one.

      • anathanoffillions-av says:

I need to watch Spring. They do a good job, I’m glad they are keeping it mostly themselves instead of going full Marvel movie yet (they’re doing some episodes of Loki and Moon Knight but I hope they have stie to do their own stuff still). I will say: I hate their segment of VHS Viral with the skateboarders 🙁 😀

        • mysteriousracerx-av says:

Oh yeah, the cultists in Tijuana in the storm drain who reanimate, hahaha, yeah … The VHS movies in general seem like some directors/actors get together on a weekend and just toss some stuff together.Speaking of VHS, we just watched the new one, VHS 99, more of the same, decently silly fun, but we specifically tracked it down because the last segment, ‘To Hell and Back’, is written by Joseph and Vanessa Winter / and stars Joseph and Melanie Stone – and they’re the writer/director/actors in a terrific movie called Deadstream (2022).  It starts super goofy, then gets scary, then goes into Evil Dead mode (i.e., it’s very juicy …).  Very highly recommended (and it has outstanding reviews, so not just me).

          • anathanoffillions-av says:

the one with the cult is one of the best horror shorts I’ve ever seen; but the one with the skaters was just boring and interminable.I will check out the new one on a recommendation, thanks!

i saw ‘weird’ at tiff and i absolutely loved it. while part of that was the thrill of seeing a real comedy in a full theatre again, it’s genuinely hilarious, radcliffe and evan rachel wood are fantastic, and IMO it never ran out of steam.incredible end credits song, too.

Millie Bobby Brown returns to the now-iconic character of Sherlock Holmes’ sister in Enola Holmes 2
*Citation fucking needed on that one

I don’t even think these authors are expressing their real opinions. They’re just saying whatever they think Twitter idiots will agree with

    • zirconblue-av says:

I guess it depends on your definition of “iconic”.  Something like 76 million households watched the first movie in it’s first four weeks, and the Rotten Tomatoes score is 91% fresh.

      • bewareofbob-av says:

Uh huh, sure. Like how something called “Red Notice” was apparently the most popular movie in the world for a week or so and now no one remembers it ever existed.

  • ghostofghostdad-av says:

Can’t wait for the Black Panther 2 ride to open.
