Somehow, Nurse Jackie returned. Despite being left for dead in the series finale of the critically acclaimed Showtime dramedy, Jackie Peyton (Edie Falco) has been revived over at Amazon Prime Video. The continuation of the show was initially greenlit by its original network in 2023, but Variety confirmed on Wednesday that the show will go on at a new home.

Falco is still on board to both star in and executive produce the series, with Liz Flahive and Abe Sylvia, two alums of the original writers room, returning to write and executive produce. The logline for the revival reads, “10 years after we left Jackie Peyton (Falco) clinging to life in the series finale, we find her back on her feet in spite of having lost her nursing license. The continuation of her story will find her facing new dilemmas in trying to be good in a world where being bad is often not only easier, but a lot more fun.”

New Nurse Jackie was announced amidst the writers strike last year alongside another beloved anti-hero comedy, Weeds. Not long after, Mary Louise Parker voiced suspicions that the Weeds revival would fall apart, and given that there hasn’t been any news about it since, it seems she was right. (Unless Prime Video wants to pick up that one, too?) In the first half of 2023, it seemed Showtime was investing big in its IP, developing spin-offs of hits like Dexter and Billions. Cut to a year later, and the cable network has instead pared down its original programming, as Variety points out.

At least Nurse Jackie—the character and the show—was able to make it out alive. The show also starred Merritt Weaver, Eve Best, Peter Facinelli, Anna Deavere Smith, Stephen Wallem, Betty Gilpin, Haaz Sleiman, Paul Schulze, and Dominic Fumusa. It’s unclear if any of the other original cast members will return for this new version; in addition to Jackie’s overdose, the series also ended with her hospital closing down, so the revival will likely be an entirely new setting and therefore a new cast of characters. We’ll just have to wait and see what Prime Video does with the show.

Can we get a show of hands – who asked for this?

    • i-miss-splinter-av says:

Exactly. It was implied in the finale that the character died, and the last season was pretty weak, as well. Just let dead things stay dead.

I legit cannot think of any reason to bring back long-finished shows, apart from brand recognition – and no, that is not a good reason.

One of those shows that was great and then they went one season too long and blew the ending.Nurse Jackie also (sorta) starred Thor Lundgren!Sadly, Weeds abandoned it premise of a suburban, pot-dealing mom and fell apart after leaving Agrestic. Even the charms of Parker couldn’t save it.

weeds also felt like it was on borrowed time even when it premiered what with legalization and all.

Agree on ongoing legalization. My best memory of Weeds is when my girlfriend (now wife of 17 years) was hanging at my house one day and I told her how good it was. There must have been a marathon of S1 / S2 on and she ended up staying all day/night to watch them. One of our first overnights.

You know which show handled it really well? Justified. Love how it showed the weed growers of Harlan – a poor and marginalised people – finally having a chance to become legitimately successful (and the tensions that brought).

It must be a little weird looking back on shows like Weeds now that the majority of attitudes have changed when it comes to marijuana. It almost seems quaint.

“One of those shows that was great and then they went one season too long and blew the ending.” The story of 99% of Showtime series!

I’d rather have another season of Let the Right One In.

So here we are, stuck at the cultural event horizon of hell. Nothing new anymore. Just remakes of remakes of remakes…
