Oh shit, another Republican reality TV star wants to get into politics

The Donald Trump presidency should’ve been a lesson that reality stars with no political experience do not belong in politics. But here we are, with yet another Republican celebrity throwing their hat in the ring. Former Trump supporter Caitlyn Jenner announced that she filed the paperwork to run for Governor of California in the potential recall election of Gavin Newsom.

“California has been my home for nearly 50 years. I came here because I knew that anyone, regardless of their background or station in life, could turn their dreams into reality. But for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people. Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision,” she says in a statement. “I have been a compassionate disrupter throughout my life, from representing the United States and winning a gold medal at the Olympics to helping advance the movement for equality. As Californians, we face a now-or-never opportunity to fundamentally fix our state before it’s too late. Taking on entrenched Sacramento politics and the special interests that fund them requires a fighter who isn’t afraid to do what is right. I am a proven winner and the only outsider who can put an end to Gavin Newsom’s disastrous time as governor.”

The recall election hasn’t even been confirmed yet, so Jenner’s getting a bit ahead of herself here. And yes, her statement sounds similar to what Trump said while announcing his run for presidency, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Jenner is being backed by a team that worked on the Trump campaign, “including Tony Fabrizio, the top pollster on Donald Trump’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns, Ryan Erwin, founder of RedRock Strategies, and Tyler Deaton, president of Allegiance Strategies,” according to Axios. The site also reported that Jenner hired Steven Cheung, “a former Trump White House and campaign communications hand who worked on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s successful 2003 recall campaign.”

So, while Jenner’s being careful to not announce that she’s working with people who were part of the Trump administration, it sure sounds like she’s aiming at having a similar political career. Hard pass.

Who is advising her?? Democrats aren’t going to vote for her and do they really think they will get a majority of the Republican vote with a Transgender Candidate? This has to be a publicity stunt, I just don’t see how she will get enough votes to even be considered a serious candidate

  • coolmanguy-av says:

    No

    • cannabuzz-av says:

I would love to see a trans governor. But, no, she’s not qualified to do anything other than what she does now. What that is exactly I’m not sure, but…no.

  • mr-threepwood-av says:

Sure, couldn’t help but call herself an outsider. She’s certainly not an outsider from the point of view of rich vs poor. How do people not realize that the real “outsiders” are marginalized people, not more uber rich capitalists whose interests are directly protected by the government upholding a capitalist regime?

    • americatheguy-av says:

She’s as much an “outsider” as Kylie is a “self-made” billionaire.

      • nilus-av says:

Hey man, don’t judge. If you can’t profit from your hot sister/step daughters “leaked” sex tape, then who should?

    • avataravatar-av says:

The term doesn’t make much sense at all in local/state politics. She’s an “outsider” to what? California? Her local school board? In my state, reps/governors are almost always just some rich business guy who felt like running. In that sense, yeah, the only real “outsiders” are the working folks who make a go at politics.

    • captain-splendid-av says:

“How do people not realize that the real “outsiders” are marginalized people”People know this.News editors, most of whom are very well off, are the ones who don’t.

      • dirtside-av says:

I think you have it backward. A lot of people don’t know this. News editors absolutely know this, because that’s the narrative they want to sell: “this rich guy is an outsider because he’s not a politician (yet).” So regular folks get the idea that the value of being an “outsider” means “outside the actual state capitol building,” as opposed to an outsider on the fringes of society as a whole.

        • recognitions-av says:

          Caitlyn Jenner is a woman

          • edkedfromavc-av says:

            Nobody here called her otherwise.

          • recognitions-av says:

Then who did ““this rich guy is an outsider because he’s not a politician (yet)“ refer to?

          • edkedfromavc-av says:

It very clearly referred to the kind of generic “non-politician outsider” type that excites the generic big-media editor type the previous poster was referring to in his example of how skewed the definition of “outsider” is in favor of the kind of already-rich-and-powerful assholes who always get into power any way, which was, you know, the topic of the thread. You disingenuous, libel-mongering shitbag.

          • recognitions-av says:

In that case, it was a pretty poor choice of pronouns considering how many transphobes like to misgender Jenner. But damn you’re mad lol

          • edkedfromavc-av says:

More with your traditional “claim a progressive stance while using rightie tactics” thing, eh? Besides the garbage-ness of the old “nobody would ever swear at me without being enraged” reasoning.

          • recognitions-av says:

            What?

          • a-better-devil-than-you-av says:

            He was perfectly clear.

          • edkedfromavc-av says:

I’ve already explained that one to you before.

          • recognitions-av says:

Yeah I continue to have no idea what you’re talking about

          • captain-splendid-av says:

““claim a progressive stance while using rightie tactics””No shit, right? He’s like a woke Ben Shapiro.

          • a-better-devil-than-you-av says:

No it wasn’t. We all know what he meant.

          • a-better-devil-than-you-av says:

This guy is the king of Stupid Mountain.

          • a-better-devil-than-you-av says:

Jesus Fucking Christ. He’s talking in general. Not about Kaitlyn.

    • gkar2265-av says:

“Outsider” and “not a career politician” are code for amateur who knows nothing about the law and just wants to cut a bunch of spending in a haphazard manner. I do not want an amateur doctor – why would I want an amateur governor?

    • a-better-devil-than-you-av says:

Yup. Once your rich you’re no longer an outsider. And whatever minority status you have doesn’t really apply anymore or not as bad. You’ve become a new sort of class.

  • yesidrivea240-av says:

Fuck no please dear god nooooooooooo.

    • hemmorhagicdancefever-av says:

Counterpoint: Yes! It’ll keep Gavin in office.

    • yesidrivea240-av says:

I went back through the article and this incredibly hypocritical statement stood out to me.
But for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people. So you’re telling me that the progressive party isn’t about making progress and that the conservative party is all about progress? WHAT?!?!? I can’t even with her.

  • darthpumpkin-av says:

I expect this will go about as well as Kanye West’s presidential campaign.

    • mr-threepwood-av says:

They are family after all. Which is a weird sentence.

    • spaced99-av says:

Let’s hope it doesn’t go as well as Trump’s presidential campaign.

      • captain-splendid-av says:

It won’t. On top of lack of retail political skills, Jenner has no constituency. Too transgender for Republicans and too kooky even for liberals.

        • elloasty-av says:

I gotta think that she has no appeal among the LGTB community either. If she’s going to run as a Republican how can she be seen as anything other than a ladder puller. Considering every Republican state house is currently busy trying to criminalize being trans.

    • americatheguy-av says:

Fun fact: Despite all that rigmarole, Kanye only ended up as an Independent VP candidate on the California ballot.

      • soveryboreddd-av says:

Was tempted to vote for him as a joke since I live in California. But even though Biden didn’t really need my vote I voted for him anyways since I don’t want to waste my vote on someone that has no chance in hell in winning. I registered last year mainly because I wanted that orange turd  out of office. The last time I voted was 2000.

  • catsliketomeow-av says:

Hey, remember when Caitlyn Jenner killed someone in a car accident back in 2015 and got away with it? I do!

    • kirivinokurjr-av says:

Sure, we all do! But aren’t you curious to hear about her plans on budget-balancing and on California wildfire mitigation?

    • cannabuzz-av says:

      So does Pepperidge Fahrms.

    • coolgameguy-av says:

      I hear she’s a supporter of ‘Mow-Down Economics’

    • rollotomassi123-av says:

Look, obviously Caitlyn Jenner is terrible because she killed someone and faced no repercussions, because she supports terrible policies and politicians who victimize people like her just because it might save her a few bucks in taxes, and because she’s a part of a truly insipid reality TV franchise, but my big problem with her is that “Caitlyn” simply isn’t an age-appropriate name for her. When you change your gender, you get to change your name, absolutely. But you don’t get to change your age. 71 year old American women are simply not named Caitlyn. She should have had to pick a name from a list that included Barbara, Donna, Linda and, perhaps most fittingly, Karen. To be clear, I am totally kidding, and don’t want anything I said here to come off as transphobic, sexist or even ageist in any way. I do however, fully believe that Caitlyn Jenner is a terrible human being who would be an absolute embarrassment as a governor.

    • insectsentiencehatesnewaccounts-av says:

It’s fitting that her campaign office is across from the Roseville AutoMall

  • refinedbean-av says:

Sounds like she’s Jenner-ating some buzz!

  • shotmyheartandiwishiwasntok-av says:

Jenner would likely be terrible at the job, but wasn’t Arnold actually OK at it back in the day?

    • americatheguy-av says:

He was tolerated, mostly because he just let the legislature and his cabinet handle all the work. He really didn’t do anything that Gray Davis wasn’t already planning, except that he cancelled the car tax. Also, his time as Governor largely prevented him from doing movies for about five years, which was a welcome respite.

      • coatituesday-av says:

He really didn’t do anything that Gray Davis wasn’t already planning, except that he cancelled the car tax – and, as we knew would happen, plunged the state into debt to the tune of the amount of money he “saved” us. Then he pretended it didn’t happen so that the DMV could continue to charge more. He presided over some kind of special election for some of his pet propositions, which all polling told him would fail (and the special election would cost extra, but he didn’t think they’d get on the regular ballot). They did fail, and he did eventually tell the voters “message undahstoodt!” by way of, I don’t know, apology.Anyway, nah, he was not a horrible governor – there were no concentration camps or mass arrests of minorities or anything.  He just wasn’t good at it. The headline in The Onion was something like “Body builder put in charge of world’s 5th-largest economy”.  No offense to body builders, or I guess economists.

      • gregthestopsign-av says:

To be fair, in spite of the stereotype of muscle-bound lunkhead (made worse by his thick accent), Arnold could at least spell Schwarzenegger right. The other bloke couldn’t even handle ‘Gary’

    • thegreetestfornoraisin-av says:

      No. No, he wasn’t.

    • hemmorhagicdancefever-av says:

To get out of the budget crises he floated a ton of bonds. Just kicked the can down the road and made it the problem bigger at the same time.

    • dirtside-av says:

He was reasonably competent as politicians go, even if his policy positions were mostly things I didn’t agree with. Put him on the “least bad” end of the GOP spectrum.

    • recognitions-av says:

When San Francisco started granting same-sex marriage licenses at the behest of mayor Gavin Newsom, the governor ordered state attorney general Bill Lockyer to intervene in the matter and vetoed legislation that would have legalized same-sex marriage. Because of their opposition to his budget cuts, Schwarzenegger controversially called his opponents in the legislature girlie men. At the 2004 Republican National Convention, Schwarzenegger gave a speech endorsing the reelection of George W. Bush as President of the United States.
He tacked to the center when he realized he wasn’t gonna be able to win reelection in California by being the conservative asshole he wanted to be, but that should in no way be mistaken for “OK.”

    • rollotomassi123-av says:

Better than expected, but I expected something truly horrendous.

    • admnaismith-av says:

At best, he was a caretaker governor – and he got us deeper into debt. His unlamented republican administration may have been what led us to two more terms of the truly necessary Jerry Brown.

Yeah, but you gotta remember that we’re through the looking glass on republican electoral politics —They’ll support literally anyone, ranging from amoral crooks up to actual pedophiles so long as they’re out there owning Libz.
I’ve no doubt they can dream up some convoluted justification for why God decided they have to vote for Caitlyn Jenner.

      • kencerveny-av says:

She’ll probably be announcing her Evangelical bona fides next week. I can’t wait for the pretzel logic mega/maga-church “pastors” tie themselves into to endorse her.

        • gildie-av says:

California republicans are kind of different than elsewhere in the USA though. Not nearly as evangelical bible-thumping and judgmental… Tolerant to a degree as long as everyone stays in their lane and behaves according to stereotype. Really into the whole Postwar America as the greatest time in history thing (which, to be fair, the 50s and 60s would have been a great time to be white and in California.) I wouldn’t be surprised if they accepted Jenner.

California’s recall process needs to be heavily modified. We already let Arnold Schwarzenegger screw over an entire generation of Californians, it can’t happen again.

  • kencerveny-av says:

I’m guessing this is one of those announce candidacy, set up PAC, collect small dollar non-traceable donations, spend as little as possible on campaign, decide to drop out of race, keep PAC money deals that several Republican “candidates” are currently attempting. There’s a guy who is “running” for Senate in St.Louis doing exactly that.

  • wangphat-av says:

This whole recall pisses me off. Newsom was elected in a landslide and the people supporting this are people like Mike Hickabee who donated millions. The system is fucked that in a state with 38 million people it takes like a million signatures to get this on the ballot. So Orange County can get bitchy and force a tax payer funded recall that won’t go anywhere. If it does happen this is the best the republican party can do?

  • anathanoffillions-av says:

“And the first thing I will outlaw is myself!”

  • secretagentman-av says:

I wonder if there will be a new reality series about this?!

  • gabrielstrasburg-av says:

Good. The more of these wackjobs who try to run the more likely it is that Newsome retains his position.
Actually, none of the repubes stand a chance. They are despised in Cali. Its either going to be Newsome or another very prominent and well known democrat.

    • alexpkavclub-av says:

A recall election works differently than our usual “top two vote-getters in the primary are the only names on the November ballot” sort of California election. Non-Democrats can run as Democrats in hopes of splitting the vote. To win this election, you only need to get more than anyone else of the other dozens of candidates to run. So if there are thirty Democrats running, and one Republican, we’re likely to get a Republican governor. This is why Republicans are so horny for recalling Democratic governors in California. It’s the only way they can win.

      God willing, Newsom isn’t recalled.

      • gabrielstrasburg-av says:

If there are 30 democrats and 1 pube running, then a democrat wins. If there is 1 democrat and 30 pubes running then a democrat still wins. There is zero chance that anyone from the treason party wins this.
I would bet every single dollar and possession I own that a traitor does not win.

        • alexpkavclub-av says:

Hey, that’s the same bet I made that Trump would never be President, and now I carry cans of beans around in a bindle. Sometimes the bastards win.

    • gkar2265-av says:

That’s what we thought in 2003.

      • gabrielstrasburg-av says:

Now is not 2003. Things have changed. The traitors are a much smaller percentage of Californians now. Newsome is a decent Governor and well liked, Davis was not. Davis had a 24% approval rating, Newsome is well over 50. And any republican running will have trumps taint smeared all over their face. People in Alabama may love the taste of trumps sweaty taint, but not in Cali.
This recall is not about actually getting a repube in office. The higherups in their party that are funding these recalls know that isnt going to happen in California. Its about making Democrats look bad and fight each other. Which will work a little, but not enough to accomplish anything other than wasting taxpayers time and money.

  • emchammered-av says:

Fuck no. I am so tired of a couple of wealthy right wing cranks abusing the California recall system. I wish they would just ban paid signature gatherers in California.
