In a pop culture world that seems to be increasingly on the verge of some kind of cataclysmic collapse—as basically every major network looks over at the teetering, creaking pile of streaming content it’s spent the last few years (and billions of dollars) assembling into a tower, with a distinct “Uh-oh” look on their faces—you have to take what comforts you can get. An actor you love getting another shot at stardom. An underdog series scoring a surprise renewal (that hopefully won’t be suddenly revoked). And, yeah: Confirmation that the Venture Bros. movie is still, against all odds, actually happening.

Fans of the Adult Swim series got confirmation of that latter happy little fact earlier this week, when series creator Jackson Publick paid homage to the 20th—Jesus!—anniversary of the animated series’ pilot by tweeting out the first image from the upcoming film. (It’s of “Swedish Murder Machine” and prime Patrick Warburton role Brock Samson, contrasted in Publick’s tweet with a shot of the character from said pilot. He’s bulkier now!)

The Venture Bros. movie was announced back in 2021, during an altogether more expansive phase of Warner Bros.’ approach to online content; it was actually part of a slate of Adult Swim revival films, which also included the movie that eventually became Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm (and, alongside it, a new run of Aqua Teen episodes) and an as-yet unseen sequel movie to Brendon Small’s Metalocalypse. The plot synopsis released for the Venture Bros. movie at the time basically promised to address (or deliberately, anti-climactically not address, as is the show’s remit) many of the questions raised in its final episode, which aired back in 2018: How are Dr. Venture and The Monarch related? Who is the boys’ mom? Does Hank have undiagnosed ADHD? (Almost certainly, in the latter case.)

Fans would be forgiven for losing a bit of faith: Publick and co-writer Doc Hammer have been fairly quiet about the follow-up film, outside of releasing a Venture-based Christmas song last year. Also: Warner Bros. Discovery has been taking a series of chainsaws to its HBO Max content plans, so it’s not like a little doubt wasn’t in order. That being said, those same cuts have mostly avoided the Adult Swim stuff—and, we can’t help but note, two years of silence is, like, nothing for The Venture Bros., a show that maintained a decidedly glacial pace as it deployed 81 episodes of TV across a massive 14 years on the air. Either way: No word yet on when the movie will actually arrive.

20 years old?? Dear lord. But yeah, seasons of this were like hen’s teeth.

  • Ara_Richards-av says:

I will always give Venture Brothers all the time they need, because the quality is always there.

  • americatheguy-av says:

Glad to see it’s still a thing, but getting I’m not holding my breath that Discovery won’t kill it eventually. Last-second failure and incompetent business fuckery are sort of Venture hallmarks.

  • cho24-av says:

I was sold on this show the moment Brock rammed his hand up a henchman’s asshole, ostensibly looking for his car keys, and then used the impaled guy like a tennis racket to beat down his colleagues.

    • systemmastert-av says:

Been a while, but I’m pretty sure Brock told a guard he had keys up his ass, and when they went in to get them he clenched hard enough to break the guys arm and then used him as a club to beat his friends, but it was Brock’s ass doing the grabbing.

“Told ya I’d kill for one those…”

We need to get to the bottom of this.

I think it was Ghosts of the Sargasso. The pirates were interrogating Brock, asking for the keys to the X-2. And he told them they were up his ass. When the henchman attempted to retrieve them, Brock waited until the guy’s forearm was halfway up his backside, and then clenched, broke his arm and (this next part, I may not remember so clearly), swung him around whilst still inserted into his rectum, to incapacitate the other pirate.Another notable Brock Samson takedown involving rectal insertion would be when he teamed up with Phantom Limb to recapture Dr. Venture and Dr. Girlfriend.
Brock grabbed a random henchman by the wrist and squeezed it until the fingers pointed outward and then forced the henchman’s hand up said henchman’s own backside.

    Hell yeah! I can’t wait for its 2025 2028 2030 release!

Ordinarily, I’d be concerned about the Zaslav Effect, but I just watched Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm on HBO Max this morning, so maybe The Zas has a soft spot for the Adult Swim golden era.

    • marshalgrover-av says:

I think it’s because these projects were developed under the home video division rather than the areas where bigger cuts have been made.

Shhh don’t say that! His minions monitor these comments to see what people shows people enjoy so he can cancel them. Supervillian 101!

      • optimusrex84-av says:

Exactly. If he had a supervillain codename registered with the Guild of Calamitous Intent, I’d guess it’s The Supreme Cancelor. And cancelling The Venture Brothers at all was at least a Level 6 Arching.

  • erroneousrex47-av says:

If memory serves Rusty Venture and the Monarch (aka Malcolm Fitzcarraldo) are half brothers because Jonas Venture Sr. decided to “help” his friend Don Fitzcarraldo (the original Blue Morpho) by fucking his wife because Don was shootin’ blanks.

I honestly couldn’t believe that it was October of 2018 when the last episode first aired, and…I genuinely feel old right now. This was pre-pandemic, pre-lock down, pre-EVERYTHING. At least, that’s how it feels to me. I’m so incredibly happy that there may actually be a proper ending to it all (which of course I’m hoping is so much better than it should be). Also keeping my fingers crossed that it gets better reception than anticipated and WB/Disco decides it’s in their best interest to keep VB in their wheel box and throw Doc and Jackson a stupid amount of $$$ just so they can keep getting us new seasons every 2-4 years. A reasonable schedule, ya know.

  • graymangames-av says:

Look, I’m happy the Venture Bros. is getting a conclusion. But regardless, it needed to end. It’s been 20 years. Publick, Hammer, and the voice actors aren’t going to be around forever. Give us one last hurrah, and let the cast ride off into the sunset.

    • bigbydub-av says:

If this doesn’t end in some manner of revelatory cliffhanger, I’m going to be pissed.

    • akabrownbear-av says:

I don’t think it would have gone on that much longer had it never been cancelled. There wasn’t that much left unresolved at the end of the last season – seems like one more season would have been enough (although I suppose they could have always opted to reinvent the show again as they did in S6).

    • bonerland-av says:

I never understand this selfish thinking. I don’t like a tv show anymore so it needs to end. It’s not Lost, it’s not working toward a grand finale. I stopped watching simpsons, they keep making them, that didn’t affect me. I think Venture Bros is still good. Make a many as they can, as long as they can.

  • marshalgrover-av says:

    Good news!

  • akabrownbear-av says:

Urbanik said that he and the rest of the voice cast wrapped last Summer so it likely has been in post-production for some time now. Hoping we get it this year but no release date being provided makes me think its still a ways away.

    • bonerland-av says:

I am shocked. On seeing the headline I was sure the story would include a line that the first draft would be expected in October.

      • akabrownbear-av says:

The thing is, the last season ended back in late-2018 and Jackson / Doc were working on S8 until the show was cancelled in late-2020. Given their normal gap between seasons had been 2.5 years from S4-S7 (not including specials), they were probably already done with scripts. And then the movie got announced in May of 2021 and I’d imagine they took a lot of what they had already planned for S8 and condensed it down into a wrap-up film. And again, their normal turnaround time on seasons was 2.5 years so you’d think even if they were starting from scratch, they’d be near done on a movie.Still holding out hope it comes out this Summer or Fall. I just want a release date and release to be done with as I am worried about Zaslav shenanigans.

    • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

That’s pretty typical. Voices are generally done prior to animation so that it matches the voices rather than the other way around. Sometimes they do have to bring people back if they realize that they really need to add a scene or something during the animation process.

  • cwc83-av says:

its worth the wait. dont rush it

  • optimusrex84-av says:

Wow, time sure flies. 20 years since the pilot episode, and 5 years since the last one. I hope this movie ties everything up and lets the show end on a high note, if it can’t get renewed.Go Team Venture!

I think we’ve all known for a while that The Monarch is the third Summers,, sorry Venture Bro. Jonas Snr knocked up Blue Morpho’s wife with his own seed.

  • thenuclearhamster-av says:

While I am sad that it’s ending. I know they’ll do it justice. They’re pretty much the only creators I have complete faith in.

And Brock drives a ‘69 Dodge Charger…gotta have my Charger porno fix and glad I’m reading there’s one last hurrah coming from The Venture Bros.

I finally finished Venture Bros during the pandemic after starting it and getting through 4 seasons years ago. I didn’t love the move to NY, but can appreciate that they wanted to move on and do *something* different. The last season picked up a bit and I would love a return to form, but I am also at peace with the idea of a movie wrapping it up. I don’t necessarily need answers to every question (who their mom is, for example) but it would be nice to get a proper send-off, whatever that might be.

    • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

I like Jared, aka “Brown Widow” (Spiderman parody). I love how they make his normal personality even more pathetic than the way Peter Parker has been portrayed.
