Oh yeah, The OA is back!

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

The OA (Netflix, Friday): One of Netflix’s most mystifying and ambitious ventures, The OA took us to different realities, gave us more questions than it answered, and inspired many a Reddit thread when it debuted two years ago. Now, its second season opens in a grim reality where Obama was never president, and where its titular lead leads a different life as a Russian heiress and is once again in Hap’s clutches. Season one left us in a state of bewilderment, and based on this season’s trailer, it’s safe to say we can expect another eight episodes of otherworldly, genre-melding, mind-bending mystery. Alex McLevy is ready to offer his own interpretation.

Regular coverage

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (The CW, Friday, 9 p.m.)
Saturday Night Live (NBC, Saturday, 11:30 p.m.)

Wild card

Funny Women Of A Certain Age (Showtime, Saturday, 9 p.m.): These female comics have seen a lot. They’ve worked in the entertainment industry during the ’70s and ’80s. They’ve toured the country while also raising infant children. They’ve dealt with the unwanted advances of creeps backstage. Now, they’ve been given a comedy special all their own, and they have a lot to say.
Headed by comedian/actress/diplomat/author/cancer survivor/activist/true hero Fran Drescher and supported by Carole Montgomery, Luenell, Lynne Koplitz, Kerri Louise and Vanessa Hollingshead, Funny Women Of A Certain Age gives the floor to brilliant, deserving comics who are all too often cast aside by the entertainment industry.

The main mystery behind the OA is how they allowed Brit Marling another series of this pretentious rubbish

Because its an interesting story, well written and well acted. You might not like it, that doesnt make it rubbish 🙂

Oh absolutely. I was just telling my co-workers a second ago about how I was with the first season until that RIDICULOUS last episode. A friend of mine who went to film school with Batmanglij told me one of the films he made – maybe his thesis film – used 9/11 as his third act plot twist and it was terribly insulting (to the viewers and 9/11 itself, I imagine).

Wrong. It was gorgeous, thoughtful, and bizarre. Well worth investing more time in. Please enjoy your simpler fare in peace.

I’m such a fan of Marling. But season 1 was pretentious goofball trash. Interpretive dance as a superpower. Fuck off.

    • merklewasaninsidejob-av says:

I will say that the…emotional experience?…of seeing them do that dance the first time is an aesthetic journey I’ve only taken at comedy improv shows I had to go to because a friend was taking a class. It is the… “Uh, wait, what? Did they…huh? Is this? Ahhhhhh….is this going to stop? I can’t…not watch…eh, I’m uncomfortable…”

I just laughed and laughed. And then hit myself in the head for spending so many hours on that show. Which isn’t going to stop me from watching the second season because I know that it will be bonkers.

I ALMOST liked Another Earth but it was a lot less insightful than it thought it was.

  • letthewookienguyen-av says:

The first episode of The OA where it transitions from America to Russia was great cinematography for a television episode. Then the season had one of the dumbest fucking climaxes ever in the finale.

  • thefabuloushumanstain-av says:

Everything Marling has done has been pretty empty, that’s why her projects are like 90% just shots of her face with mild electronic music in the background. Even her acting, in another universe she got a razzie for her part in “Arbitrage” where, about Richard Gere, she’s like “HE’S MY DADDDD!”  These shows are more or less a scam.

    OA was pretty, awful nonsense.
