There’s no Hannibal Lecter in the trailer for CBS’s Clarice, but fans of Jonathan Demme’s Silence Of The Lambs should recognize a few other figures (and deep, spooky wells) from the ‘91 film (and, of course, Thomas Harris’ series of novels).

Joining the titular character (Rebecca Breeds, stepping in for Jodie Foster) is FBI agent Ardelia Mapp (Devyn A. Tyler), attorney general Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson), and Catherine Martin (Marnee Carpenter), who, a year after the events of the film, still finds herself swept back to the bottom of that dry well. Also on hand? Precious, the adorable dog that we assume is a lot happier living with her than Buffalo Bill.

Buffalo Bill’s reign of terror appears to hover large over the events of the series, which will center that trauma as Clarice reckons with her personal demons and confronts more monstrous figures. Kal Penn, Lucca de Oliveira, and Michael Cudlitz round out the cast of Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet’s continuation.

Clarice debuts on CBS and CBS All Access on Thursday, February 11.

Is it really necessary for her to have a cartoon sexist boss? I’m honestly half expecting the pilot to have him yell at her “Now get me some coffee!”

A lot of awful shit has gone on this week, but being reminded that instead of a Bryan Fuller season 4 of Hannibal with Elliot Page as Clarice, we get something that’s not only made by Alex Kurtzman of all people, but also legally barred from referring to Hannibal really still ranks up there. When will his reign of terror end?

    • stevil555-av says:

Alex Kurtzman’s previous writing credits include: Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Cowboys and Aliens, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Amazing Spiderman 2, and The Mummy (which he also directed). Just an awesome run of pure crap. He’s a studio hack and anytime you see his name in the credits, that’s a cue to stay away.

      • cropply-crab-av says:

He currently runs all of Star Trek, in a terrible way. Also his creative partner for this project Jenny Lumet was the screenwriter for that Mummy movie.

    • morinleto-av says:

      >Elliot PageWell, uh…how would that work?

      • cropply-crab-av says:

Because if it wasn’t for behind-the-scenes fuckery it would have been made in 2016/17, years before Page came out as trans, and at the time he was Fuller’s pick for the role.

        • chris-finch-av says:

Considering Fuller’s deftness in reimagining and recontextualizing familiar characters in the first three seasons, I don’t see any reason Page would be any worse/better a choice in 2021 than in 2016, and I hope they eventually press forward with a season 4.

          • cropply-crab-av says:

Oh aye. I have zero problem with Page still playing the part if they’re comfortable with it, or even if Clarice is recontextualised as trans and/or non-binary. Plenty of cis actors have taken roles as trans characters, and I believe Page is reprising his role in Umbrella Academy.

        Aubrey Plaza was busy?

      • obatarian-av says:

They used to be Ellen Page in 2016.

  • zorrocat310-av says:

I dunno. From the trailer it looks like the series has bitten off more than it can chew.

  • mark-t-man-av says:

round out the cast of Alex KurtzmanAnd that’s my cue to exit.

  • coolgameguy-av says:

Would you watch this? I won’t watch this.

  • julian9ehp-av says:

*Jenny* Lumet? Is she the daughter of that director?

  • noturtles-av says:

At this point a “serial killer show” has to be pretty damned unusual and amazing for me to care. A basic cable rehash of SOTL ain’t that.

    • teageegeepea-av says:

This isn’t basic cable, or cable at all. It’s CBS! A broadcast network, like the one that brought you “Hannibal”.

      • donboy2-av says:

Excuse me: it’s a “CBS Original”, the laughable way that they’ve been trying to class up their shows by making them sound like a “Netflix Original” or whatever.

        • teageegeepea-av says:

I think Netflix calls things “Netflix Originals” when they’re not actually original to Netflix, but the audience isn’t expected to notice.

          • stevengoldfarb-av says:

Do you mean “A Netflix Original Series (that already has had a full run in canada)” or “A Netflix Original Series (we bought when the original network dropped it like a ton of bricks)”

  • actionactioncut-av says:

The one-two-three punch of Devyn, Jayne, Marlee had me like

  • michelle-fauxcault-av says:

Kal Penn, Lucca de Oliveira, and Michael Cudlitz round out the cast…And Armie Hammer as Not-Hannibal-No-Siree, presumably. Those DMs just have to be viral marketing, right? No?

  • evanfowler-av says:

They do not have the rights to Hannibal Lecter. Let me repeat that. They do not have the rights to Hannibal Lector.Because, and be honest, when you watch Silence of the Lambs, you always think, “This movie is good, but it’d be a lot better without Anthony Hopkins”, right?Right?

    • chris-finch-av says:

Trust me, when you meet Counselor Jacques-Reiter Shechter, whose…unusual…tastes have led to the catchy, rhyming nickname “Jacques-Reiter the Backbiter,” you’re gonna be asking “Hannibal who?”

    • anon11135-av says:

When did nerddom get so pathetic as to accept Lecter as the protagonist of that great movie? Clarice was the protagonist.Oh, wait, Clarice is a woman. So she can’t be.

    • teageegeepea-av says:

This won’t even have Buffalo Bill, because it’s a sequel series.

  • szielins-av says:

Also on hand? Precious, the adorable dog that we assume is a lot happier living with her than Buffalo Bill. Why? I bet she only gives him boring chew toys.

  • toddisok-av says:

    Old ghosts linger…

  • sugarpeasdropem-av says:

    this looks…not great.

  • enemiesofcarlotta-av says:

Is anyone else surprised this heavier material isn’t being put on CBS All Access as prescription bait and so they can go beyond network standards?

  • oldmanschultz-av says:

So basically it’s “Hannibal”… but without Hannibal. Who asked for this? The trailer looks terrible, almsot like there’s, uh, I don’t know, not much of a story or something?! And who picked that godawful neo-folk cover of “Country Roads” that just made me wanna rip off my ears?I know this is just a trailer, but I hate the whole thing so much already.
