Returning favorites Succession and Ted Lasso topped the list of nominations for the 74th annual Emmy Awards, which were announced during a livestream event on Tuesday morning. HBO’s juggernaut dramedy Succession earned a whopping 25 nominations, while Ted Lasso and The White Lotus tailed behind with 20 nominations each. Hacks, Barry, and Euphoria also came back with more than a dozen nominations each.

After some pushback last year about how the number of nominations per network/streamer was tallied, the Television Academy declined to do so this year. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO earned 108 total nominations—140 when combined with its sister streamer HBO Max. Either way, HBO beat out its rival Netflix, which earned 105 nominations. As a conglomerate, Warner Bros. Discovery came out on top with 155 nominations across all its networks.

Only Murders In The Building had the strongest showing for a freshman comedy with 17 nominations, while beloved network sitcom Abbott Elementary garnered seven nominations, including Best Comedy Series and a Lead Actress nod for creator and star Quinta Brunson. Severance also made a promising debut with 14 total nominations, including recognition for Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, and Christopher Walken.

First-time nominee Sydney Sweeney earned nods for her performance in both Euphoria and The White Lotus. Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul and Cooper’s Bar), Julia Garner (Ozark and Inventing Anna), and Harriet Walter (Ted Lasso and Succession) joined Sweeney in double-dipping in the acting categories.

Popstars made their presence known this year: Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls earned six nominations while both Adele and Lady Gaga got nods in the Variety Special category (the latter for her One Last Time special with Tony Bennett).

One popstar surprisingly missing from the list is Selena Gomez, who was expected to earn her first Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in Only Murders In The Building (her costars Steve Martin and Martin Short will be facing off in the Lead Actor category). Insecure’s final season only earned one nomination for its creator and star Issa Rae as Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Stranger Things earned 13 nominations, but was shut out of the acting categories entirely. Check back on The A.V. Club for a deep dive on all the snubs and surprises.

Nothing against Steve and Martin, but Selena Gomez is really the heart of “Only Murders in the Building.” Really surprised she was left out.

The whole program would be better if Short would dial his wackyness back about 30%.

    • bc222-av says:

She is the heart, but she’s also the least good actor in the cast, I think.

IMHO Gomez’s acting is really wooden.

I don’t know what genius inspired sticking her on a screen with Martin and Short, but she’s a nigh perfect foil for them. That said, I’m hard-pressed to say she’s doing anything remarkable in the role. She’s mostly just playing a straight banana to a couple of living legends, and doing a fine job of it.

Britt Lower absolutely deserved a nod for Severance.

    FUCK YEAH TURTURRO.

Maybe this is an unpopular take, but the complete shutting out of Ghosts is kinda disappointing to me. Honestly, I thought it’s first season was better than Ted Lasso Season 2. What do I know though?

Can’t believe Sarah Goldberg wasn’t nominated for “Barry” but BOTH Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham were nominated for “Ted Lasso.” Waddingham (who I adore; don’t get me wrong) was given NOTHING to do in season 2, and the change in her character from badass boss b*tch to “waah I want to go on dates” sucked.

    • thundercatsridesagain-av says:

Agree wholeheartedly. Sarah Goldberg is a total snub. She broke out in this season of Barry and she had so much to work with, whereas Waddingham and Temple’s characters languished in the worst story arcs of Ted Lasso’s season.

      100% this. This is insane.

Bill Hader is also “double-dipping in the acting categories” since he’s up for Lead and Guest. (And writing. And directing. So proud of Stefon!)

I’ve been making my way through Better Call Saul and have been really impressed by Seehorn’s acting. It’s not a typical “flashy” part that usually gets this kind of awards, but she’s able to achieve Tony Leung-levels of communicating her character’s thoughts and emotions with just her eyes.

Legends Of Tomorrow got Emmy snubbed again! You had one job!

  • ohnoray-av says:

I really wish Rose Byrne landed a nod for Physical, she’s doing some of the best acting on TV right now.

  • danposluns-av says:

Rhea Seehorn has managed to actually make me care about entertainment awards. If she doesn’t win I might be vaguely upset or something.EDIT: Also, WTF, no love for Michael Mando? What he does in his final episode is a masterpiece of acting, as award-worthy as anything else on television.

I was about to raze a building if there was not a single nomination for Our Flag Means Death, then I remembered how the Emmy season works.

Way too many nominations for Succession. I can’t begin to understand what everyone sees in a show about a bunch of unfunny rich white people endless repeating the same mistakes and making a dozen uninteresting failed business deals in a row.

  • sid9-0-av says:

The finale of Succession is one of the most tense scenes I’ve ever witnessed. The hair on my forearms were standing at attention like I was watching an action or horror thriller. You really had no idea which way it would shake out, there’s nothing like family drama done right.
