It’s hard to believe Orphan Black debuted a decade ago. Tatiana Maslany conquered the screen by playing multiple clones in the underrated-as-hell sci-fi drama, and thankfully won her long overdue Emmy in 2016. 10 years later, the cable network is taking us back to the clone club with a spin-off, Orphan Black: Echoes, set to debut later in 2023.

To mark the anniversary of the original, AMC released new photos of Echoes, featuring lead star Krysten Ritter. We have to admit that casting TV’s erstwhile Jessica Jones, or as true fans know, The B—— In Apartment 23 (whom no one should trust) is a genius move. Set in 2052, Echoes follows Ritter’s Lucy, who has an unimaginable origin story. This description tracks if you know the background for Maslany’s characters (Sarah Manning, Cosima Niehaus, Alison Hendrix, Rachel Duncan, Helena, and other clones born out of IVF).

Is Lucy a clone? TBD. But Echoes centers on her trying to find a place in the world. Meanwhile, a group of women form a bond as they explore the scientific manipulation of human existence, according to the AMC synopsis. The cast includes Avan Jogia, Keeley Hawes, James Hiroyuki Liao, and Amanda Fix. Orphan Black creator John Fawcett returns as executive producer and director. Echoes is created and showrun by Anna Fishko.

The filming wrapped in January this year, and AMC initially said the show would premiere in March 2023. Obviously, that’s not happened, but we have the first look photos to tide us over until Echoes arrives. Or rewatching AMC/BBC America’s Orphan Black and the magic of Maslany is never a bad idea. (Heads-up: Ritter also stars in HBO Max’s upcoming Love And Death).

It’s been radio silence for like a year, I was starting to think it died in development. *excitement*

Krysten Ritter knows you have to walk away from your past in slow motion while it explodes behind you like in a John Woo movie

  • paulkinsey-av says:

So every character in every one of those photos is Kristen Ritter? Pretty impressive.

  • dc882211-av says:

Wasn’t the original on BBC America, not AMC? (I know they’re corporate partners, but pretty sure AMC never aired a first run episode of it).

    • dinoironbody7-av says:

Yes, which is weird since it’s not British.

      yes

It was a BBC America show but when the the show got some buzz regarding Maslany’s performances, select episodes (season premieres) were simulcast on BBCA, AMC and IFC in an effort to grow the audience. They expanded that strategy with Killing Eve when entire seasons were simulcast.

BBC America is co owned by AMC, and it’s available on AMC+

When this was announced, my reaction was something like this:Them: “A sequel to Orphan Black —” Me: What the fuck? Are you kidding, why would they ever do that? What a bunch of -Them: “—starring Krysten Ritter”Me: Oh. Okay. Never mind. When can I watch it?

  • recognitions-av says:

I like Ritter and all, but she can’t hold a candle to Maslany. And hopefully Fawcett’s involvement will be mostly hands-off. By the end he and that other guy really ran the show into the ground.

  • legospaceman-av says:

Krysten Ritter as the lead makes me

At first I thought “unimaginable” was some editorializing but I scrounged for another article and it seems like that’s their infuriating official description.I know “mysterious past” is vague and overused but it seems like less of a challenge to audiences. It is a bit too straight forward if she’s also clones right? I enjoyed the original run a lot and I finally realized I still haven’t seen the final season or two so I don’t know if that’s even on the table.

  • robgrizzly-av says:

Is Lucy a clone? TBD. I mean, if she’s not, what’s the point, right? Just a regular character caught up in science conspiracies? They could do that, sure, but that’s not really what made the show unique.

    • gargsy-av says:

“I mean, if she’s not, what’s the point, right?”

She could be the person who was cloned. She could be hunting clones. She could be the child of a clone and trying to find out some sci-fi thing. Her *just* being a clone and finding her clone mates wouldn’t make this a reboot or a sequel, it would just be a remake.

    • sock-monkee-av says:

Plus, that last photo up above with the hidden barcode/whatever means she is some sort of lab rat. I will probably watch for Ritter but I hope there’s at least some sort of twist on the theme.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I will simply ask the question I ask of all Krysten Ritter projects: will her character at some point give someone a smackwich?

  • captainbubb-av says:

I remain mildly interested. Tatiana Malsany’s performances as the clones really became the main draw once the plot got too convoluted. I don’t care that much about the world but Krysten Ritter is cool.Season rankings?? I’d say 1, 2, 4, 5, 3. Maaaybe switch 2 and 4.

I have bought only one Funko Pop character. It has a place of honor on my desk:Bonus for this upcoming show: Keeley Hawes is a darn good actor. Excellent in both “The Durrells in Corfu” and “Bodyguard” as two totally different personalities.

I don’t know how I missed hearing about this until the last week or two and through this article of all things …https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-11893657/I-quit-job-sales-Im-award-winning-K-Pop-songwriter.htmlBut apparently Orphan Black had a Japanese version. From 2017!

  • hornacek37-av says:

Just give us a scene of 4 Krysten Ritters dancing together and we’ll be happy.

  • amazingpotato-av says:

I’d love it if the reveal is all the main characters are non-identical clones of Kristen Ritter. Is that even possible? It’s sci-fi, of course it is!

  • kbroxmysox2-av says:

I really hope Tatiana shows up at some point. Maybe as Sarah or Allison or Cosima, or Helena…Maybe someone new. Maybe someone new and them all the sisters. I hope Krysten Ritter’s character isn’t a clone though. It’s just going to be hard to follow up on how Tatiana played the characters. At one point, during season one, I legit thought “Man, I hope they don’t kill off Alison. The actress who plays her is too good to lose,” before five seconds later being like “Oh right….”
