Look, we know, okay? We know it’s too soon after the recent Oscars ceremony to talk about next year’s. But considering how many award-worthy films have already hit theaters, and how many buzzy titles are expected to come throughout 2022, we can’t resist. From indies to blockbusters, underdogs to shoo-ins, The A.V. Club has rounded up our way-too-early predictions (and hopes) for the 95th Academy Awards. Come jump the gun with us! And a full year from now when the Oscar nominations list is announced, please don’t hold us to these semi-educated guesses.

You’re right about one thing: this is too soon. You haven’t even seen many of these, and you named basically every superhero movie that already premiered.I was under the impression Russell’s movie was titled “Canterbury Glass”, but perhaps that was just the title used during production. This does make it harder to refer to.

However you want to call them (awards bait, prestige movies, etc.), the ‘big ones’ are released around November/December for a reason. CODA is one of those rare, surprisingly unforgotten movies released earlier in the season, and it’s an exception.  As good as some of these movies probably are, they might not stay in people’s memories.  Lots can happen.

Good point. The Oscar-winner Crash didn’t open until May.

Silence Of The Lambs was a February release, I believe. Not sure why I remember that (assuming it’s correct), but the human mind is a strange and wonderful thing. Which may be why Lecter eats ‘em, I dunno.

I think Licorice Pizza was known as “Soggy Bottom” for a while.

    For SEO purposes, I presume?

What, you expect AV Club writers to base articles on their knowledge, judgement, and research? That’s not what the shareholders want.Plus, last time they tried that Barsanti ended up giving himself an aneurysm.

Considering its recent success, my money’s on “CODA 2: Your Sister Is a CODA.”

The Outfit? No? Ok. Was hoping The Outfit would get on this list.

  • sethsez-av says:

There must have been a better excuse for jamming all these movies into a slideshow for SEO than this. Hell, I might have even bothered clicking through the slideshow then!

Weird this doesn’t mention The Fablemans, Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical period picture that seems like it was created in a laboratory to win awards. (And Kimi isn’t getting any nominations.)

  • filmlover93-av says:

I was guessing the Outfit possibly.  Mark Rylance sure seems like he might get a nomination for that one possibly.

Days of Future Past is the best superhero movie.I mean, besides Batman. And Superman. And Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I am guessing “The Whale” is waiting for the next Oscars. Brendan Fraser for best actor?

I haven’t seen Everything Everywhere yet–I may take the train down to DC this weekend to do just that–but if our reward for interminable Slapgate discourse is Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan holding statuettes, I’m all for it.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is amazing. Barring a miraculous collection of masterful movies this year (feel free to surprise me, 2022), it’ll be pretty high in my Top 10. Any excuse to praise it is OK by me.
