Paddington Bear is going international. Though the first two entries in the beloved film series featured adventures around London, Paddington is originally from South America. In the long-anticipated third movie, the adorable bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) and the Brown family take a trip to his homeland for Paddington In Peru, premiering in the U.K. on November 8 and the U.S. on January 17.
According to the film’s synopsis (via Variety), “Paddington returns to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown Family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and up to the mountain peaks of Peru.”
In the new trailer, Paddington once again proves stars really are just like us by taking an extremely unfortunate passport photo. The Browns then set off to Peru, where they have a series of unexpected encounters—first with a very handsome… boat, and its captain Antonio Banderas. Then there’s an enthusiastic nun (Olivia Colman) playing guitar among the mountains in a way that would make Maria Von Trapp proud. Most unexpected is that Aunt Lucy has gone missing on a “quest” in the Amazon, and it’s up to Paddington and the Browns to find her. Paddington presents this as an opportunity to give his family a tour of his birthplace, but it looks a lot more like an Indiana Jones movie.
Paddington In Peru features returning stars Whishaw, Samuel Joslin, Madeline Harris, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, and Imelda Staunton as the voice of Aunt Lucy. Newcomers include Colman, Banderas, Carla Tous, and Emily Mortimer, who replaces Sally Hawkins as Mary Brown. Dougal Wilson also joined the franchise as director, as Paul King, who helmed the previous two installments, had scheduling conflicts with Wonka. King developed the story for Paddington 3 alongside Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton; Burton co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Foster and James Lamont.
