Patty Jenkins and Chris Pine reunite for I Am The Night

Patty Jenkins and Chris Pine reunite for I Am The Night

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Monday, January 28. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

I Am The Night (TNT, 8 p.m., limited series premiere): The Venn diagram of people who might be interested in I Am The Night is pretty damned complicated. Did you like Monster and/or Wonder Woman, two very different films that have director Patty Jenkins in common? Might you be an ardent reader (or watcher, or listener) of true crime? Perhaps you enjoy James Ellroy? Is it a pleasure to spot titans of American theater doing their thing in movies or television (as is the case here, with Tony-winner Jefferson Mays)?

Maybe you just love Chris Pine, of the Hollywood Chrises. Who could blame you?

Pine is very good, as he so often is, in I Am The Night, which is inspired by the late Fauna Hodel’s book One Day She’ll Darken: The Mysterious Beginnings Of Fauna Hodel. Fauna, here played by India Eisley, discovers the circumstances of her birth unexpectedly, and what she finds leads her to Los Angeles, where she encounters a relation: George Hodel, a physician later suspected of the Black Dahlia murder. Pine plays a reporter who’s, ah, not doing great. Noel Murray will check in on him and recap the proceedings.

Regular coverage

Arrow (The CW, 8 p.m.)

Wild card

Independent Lens, “The King” (PBS, 9 p.m.): Say, you all like Elvis? Here’s two hours of Elvis. PBS bills this installment of Independent Lens, its acclaimed series of feature documentaries, as “musical road trip and meditation on modern America.”

Yeah, that seems like a pretty apt description, actually.

Politics Corner – No Stone Unturned edition? No, not today. Read up on his indictment, it’s comfort food. I’ve mostly stayed away from the Russia stuff, not because it isn’t extremely important (which it is) but because it’s out of our hands. The Venezuela news is also huge, but I don’t have a great grasp on that at the moment. Maduro sucks. On the other hand I read this great Politico article with inside sources explaining how Pelosi beat Trump on the shutdown (It took a lot more than saying NO DEAL to keep the Dem caucus unified, and her total victory strengthened her hand at keeping it unified, despite reports Trump saw overshadowing Pelosi’s new speakership as a major benefit of the shutdown.) Until we have a Dem presidential nominee, Pelosi is the leader of the party and the leader of the federal resistance. And she killed it here. She cut off Trump’s balls and was too smart and disciplined to take a victory lap.The next round is already gearing up. And I still agree with the compromise that she gets 4 more years while training a younger generation of leadership. But if you were doubting that Dems should have brought her back as speaker, read this article that includes lots of inside detail from sources I don’t have. It’s the details that sell it. We could have easily lost this fight. Thanks, Nancy!https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.politico.com/amp/story/2019/01/25/pelosi-latest-government-shutdown-1128577

It sure took a long time … but I guess that first check from Mexico finally cleared? See everyone, you knew his word was as good as gold. Lol – Amsterdam lover, Everywhere, United States, 2 days ago

I never in a million years thought I’d see the day I was rooting for the FBI and Nancy Pelosi. But I’m not afraid to admit I was totally wrong about her. She is the check on the unbalanced. It’s about time the Dems stopped capitulating their way rightward. Once Trump and Pence are gone I’ll be proud to call her POTUS. Until 2020.
