Percy Jackson And The Olympians renewed for season 2 at Disney+

Disney is moving forward with a second season of its Disney+ adaptation of the Percy Jackson books, according to The Hollywood Reporter; the studio announced the news that Percy Jackson And The Olympians would be getting a second season amidst a general sort of Disney news dump earlier this afternoon, attached to its recent Q1 earnings call.

And Percy Jackson has, in fact, been the kind of thing you might tout to investors, especially if you’ve been having as rocky a past 12 months as Disney has had. The series, which featured fairly regular involvement from original author Rick Riordan, has been both a critical and a commercial success for a streaming service that’s kind of needed one in recent months; Disney has said that more than 13 million people watched the show’s first episode back in December of 2023, and more than one critic has noted that the show is a much better handling of Riordan’s source material than the two film adaptations from 2010 and 2013.

Like those films, the series centers on Percy Jackson, a pretty regular kid when you get past the whole “child of a god who spends his time at a summer camp for mythological creatures” thing. The show stars Walker Scobell as Percy, plus Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri as his pals Annabeth and Grover; it also features a whole host of bigger names showing up in small parts as its various gods, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jay Duplass, and the late Lance Reddick, who played Zeus in the show’s first season.

Riordan issued a statement today heralding the news, and making it clear that the show’s second season will cover the material from his second book: “I can’t wait to bring the next season of Percy Jackson to Disney+. Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We’re heading for the Sea of Monsters!”
