After nearly two hours of announcements about “reimaginings,” Pixar finally went ahead and announced an actual original film at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California.
The new Pixar movie follows Elio (Yonas Kibreab), a young boy who makes first contact with space aliens. It stars America Ferrera as Olga, Elio’s mother, who runs a top-secret military operation trying to track down a transmission from deep space. Elio ends up the first person to make contact and gets beamed up into a flying saucer. These aliens then take him to the “communiverse,” which is like an alien U.N.
“It’s here where Elio, a kid who struggles to fit in on Earth, accidentally becomes our planet’s ambassador to the rest of the universe,” said director Adrian Molina. “Ultimately, Earth Spain will rest on whether Elio can fight through his self-doubt and prove to the universe that that’s part of being human, just being yourself. Even if your self feels a little alien to everyone else.”
But the real money was young Yonas Kibreab, who took the mic with intense confidence to tell the story of when he was cast. “I was just super excited. I was jumping up and down, high fiving my dad,” he said. “When I got the call from [producer Mary Alice Drumm], we were driving to another audition, and we pulled into a little strip mall. Right in front of us was a restaurant called Olga’s Kitchen. At that point, I felt like it was just the universe congratulating me.”
Oh, also, Amy Poehler was there to announce that Insider Out 2 would be coming from director Kelsey Mann. The movie will take place in Riley’s head, but this time she’s a teenager, and there will be new emotions showing up.

I wonder how they will cast Raging Horniness, Self-absorption, Petty Friendship Drama, and Withering Condescension.
Don’t forget Crushing Anxiety!
Pohler is already in the cast, but she’d be a shoo-in otherwise for Withering Condescension. Self-absorption, obviously, should go to Mindy Kaling.
Wasn’t she already Disgust?
you’re right. how about Zach Braff?
Neil Patrick Harris, either Aziz Ansari (I think he’s not canceled anymore?) or Robert Downey Jr., Rachel McAdams, Aubrey Plaza
I’ve read elsewhere the Kaling and Hader already noped out after Pixar lowballed them (reportedly $100k, compared to Poehler’s $5m), so pretty sure most of those names wouldn’t consider it for that kind of money, either.
Yeah, guess not.
Looking forward to Ill-Informed Self-Righteousness as well.
Who will play the twins, Mania and Depression?
Withering Condescension can be Janeane Garofalo (she was already in *Ratatouille*) or, if they wanna go with the newer model, Aubrey Plaza.I’d say Raging Horniness could be Andy Dick, but that’d require him to be around actual people and no one wants that.
The beauty of animation is that they can have Dick record his lines far, far away from any human being. The downside, of course, is giving employment to Andy Dick.
They have to introduce Sarcasm.
i.e., the four horsemen of social media.
Unless Maya Rudolph somehow cameos with a “bubble bath,” no way is this necessary after Big Mouth.
You just like ‘batin
Well duh.
Insider Out 2Can’t wait for the third film, Insidest Out.
2 Inside 2 Out
Inside Out II: The Legend Of Curly’s Insides
I read Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling turned down lowball offers for this.
Meh, they didn’t add all that much to the original anyway. Now Lewis Black, on the other hand…
“communiverse”I can already see right-wingers going nuts about this proving Disney is promoting communism…
Because multi-billion dollar corporations love to promote communism. At least, that’s what Tucker and MTG and Ted Cruz will laughably insist
Ah yes, Insider Out 2, the movie about the thoughts in Riley’s head as she takes on Big Tobacco and CBS Corporate.
I wonder how Pixar is going to make these movies about death and loss. Hey, remember when they used to make movies explicitly for kids? Nah, not really.
See, kids don’t have money. Womanchildren and manchildren, however, do.
Kids under 10 don’t have money. Teenagers do have money, and they love Disney, too.
“Ultimately, Earth Spain will rest on whether Elio can fight through his self-doubt and prove to the universe that that’s part of being human, just being yourself.” Does this make any sense to anybody?
Are there versions of Spain on every alien civilization and somehow, the one on Earth is uniquely vulnerable? But what about Earth Portugal?Yeah, made no sense to me either.
I think there might’ve been some sort of transcription error of “Earth’s fate.”
Earth Spain!Yeah, I sat there staring at that sentence for a minute too, assuming (probably correctly) at first that it was just a drastic typo, but giving probably way too much benefit of the doubt that I was simply missing something.
Zootopia (2016) was the last great Disney/Pixar animated film.
I’d say “Luca” is awesome. But yeah, Pixar were a sure-shot till “Wall-E”, and after that it’s a mixed bag.
Turning Red and Luca were great. Soul was also fun
IMHO, Coco is the most recent great Disney or Disney/Pixar animated feature. Which only shifts the line forward 18 months, leaving a stretch of five years of animated features ranging from “meh” to “very good but flawed”. Again, IMHO.
