Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, July 18. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

The End (Showtime, 8 p.m., series premiere): It’s the beginning of The End, a dark new Australian comedy from Sam Strauss (who’s also writing on the upcoming Nine Perfect Strangers) starring Harriet Walter, Frances O’Connor, Ingrid Torelli, Morgan Davis, Noni Hazlehurst, and Luke Arnold. Walter stars as the widowed Edie, who attempts suicide in the bracing first hour of the series. The End carefully explores Edie’s deep wells of grief and the chasm between her and her daughter Kate (O’Connor), a doctor who works in palliative care at an Australian hospice—and therefore wrestles with these end-of-life questions on a regular basis—while giving both women a chance to act out. Strauss ventures through incredibly complicated territory in this brilliant, meditative 10-part series, with mordant tone firmly in place. Despite its title, The End takes a look at everything that came before Edie’s decision, as well as the numerous times she and Kate have been on opposite sides of a debate. Walter gives one of the year’s best performances, so prepare yourself for The End.

If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Regular coverage

DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow (The CW, 8 p.m.)
The White Lotus (HBO, 9 p.m.)
Kevin Can F**k Himself (AMC, 9 p.m.): A reminder that our coverage is following the AMC release schedule, rather than that of AMC+, so tonight’s recap will be for episode five, “The Grand Victorian.”
Rick And Morty (Adult Swim, 11 p.m.)

Wild card

100 Foot Wave (HBO, 10 p.m.): Catch 100 Foot Wave and you’ll watch as pro big-wave surfer and record-holder Garrett McNamara sits on top of the world. Directed by Chris Smith, an executive producer on Tiger King, this documentary follows McNamara’s journey to the top, as he “redefined the limits of surfing by conquering the world’s largest waves.”

After binging Us (no, the other one), I watched Starter For Ten. It’s chock full of Brits that’d go on to be Marvel characters.Superman: Red Son the cartoon is an improvement over the comic.
There’s so much spinoff seeding that Loki feels like a supporting character in his own series. Maybe this was underwhelming because my expectations were so high? If
you enjoy Tom Hiddleston as most folk do, however, it’s a pleasant
    diversion: https://mattthecatania.wordpress.com/2021/07/14/is-loki-too-low-key/

“Walter stars as the widowed Edie, who attempts suicide in the bracing first hour of the series. “It’s a comedy, guys!

I (finally) finished Bridgerton. It ended in a manner I categorically didn’t expect with respect to the primary individuals’ romance, but I liked that. I apparently had guessed (correctly) the identity of the mystery character three episodes ago, and then reconsidered. Weird stuf.Gunpower Milkshake and Black Widow were both enjoyable, but neither was a spectacle of romp. I prefer the cast of the former to the latter, though they made less interesting use of many of the characters. I need some new cartoons.  That’s the tweet.

After reading the description of The End, I thought, no way, that sounds depressing, but the promo makes it look funnier, so I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the recommendation.

Ouch! I usually skip reading about any shows that are in a streaming service or premium channel I don’t have. Reading about The End kind of makes me glad I don’t have Showtime. As a widow myself, there were times when I regret not going home immediately and offing myself after losing my husband. Meanwhile, everyone else in my life (who weren’t directly affected) kept telling me that I had a reason to live. I still struggle with this.
