Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am - Official Trailer

Filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders made a much overdue documentary on national treasure Toni Morrison entitled in 2019, the same year the acclaimed author passed away. This made the doc bittersweet but it also helped us celebrate the life of a literary titan. Featuring contemporaries and fans like Oprah Winfrey, Russell Banks, Barack Obama, and Angela Davis, the doc blends hagiography with dashes of how Morrison broke the glass ceiling by not only being a Black author but also a female one who inspired countless people along the way. Many of Morrison’s novels have also been adapted to film, most notably Jonathan Demme’s Beloved in 1998 which starred Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover. Greenfield-Sanders also teamed up with film critic Elvis Mitchell for the doc The Black List in 2008 which featured Morrison. If you only know the name Toni Morrison, then Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am is a great way to find out more.

Ehh…. Not a fan at all of The Lorax movie. Geisel had a great, impactful environmental story about protecting the trees, and the earth in general, and in order to make this into a feature length film they had to add this whole longer plot about some guy wanting to own the air, character backstories, a love interest … its a mess. The original already had its message, but “more” was not “better” here. Sort of like the disaster (IMO) of the Jim Carrey Grinch movie.

Yeah, I’m not sure it’s true of ALL movies made from picture books, but with Seuss, less is better. That is, the best Grinch adaptation is the 2D animated one, which clocks in at… slightly longer than it takes to read the book aloud. And there was a Horton Hears a Who adaptation in 1970 – again, about a half hour long (with Hans Conreid as a Who and June Foray as the kangaroo!!).
I can see a way to expand Seuss stories to two hours, but can’t see a reason. You can get a couple movies out of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, or Jumanji, and I’m sure there are many more picture books that have benefited from long, loud, full-length movies.  I just don’t think Seuss’ stuff lends itself to that.  But no one ever asks me.

My favorite part of all the marketing of the Lorax movie was the SUV tie in advertising.

Smile is absolutely not a good movie given the attempted subject matter and ending.

I don’t usually comment on these but for this one? I’ll just say this is a nice crop of movies. I highly recommend Bad Times at the El Royale and A Simple Favor .. and of course Devil in a Blue Dress is near-perfect. (“Near” because it didn’t launch an Easy Rawlins series, damnit.)And I will get to check off my bucket list “see a movie where Idris Elba is a genie” and “see a movie where Idris Elba punches a lion” in the same month!

“Dr. Seuss was the original wokester”Looks like somebody has not been keeping up on their Dr. Seuss news.

Ugh Halloween Ends. DGG Halloween was such a good movie but they really managed to shit the bed with the sequels to it. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, give the track record of Halloween sequels but man it sucks how bad “Kills” and “Ends” is.

Beast and Smile are good.If you haven’t seen Something Wild, you’re missing out. Ray Liotta is awesome. Can’t believe they haven’t made a sequel to Devil In A Blue Dress.

    • nycpaul-av says:

Something Wild is really entertaining, and Liotta is great. That’s where Scorsese first saw him when he cast him in Goodfellas.

*climbs atop a very small and lonely hill* HALLOWEEN ENDS IS A MASTERPIECE!

  • lindaponte-av says:

Smile was baaaaaad. The ending was pretty cool but not worth sitting through everything else before it

  • seven-deuce-av says:

    Smile was mediocre.

Bad Times At The El Royale plays like a fanboy’s attempt at doing Tarantino.
