Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson is set to host her first Saturday Night Live episode on April 1, but her debut may face some issues as members of the editorial crew have previously announced a strike planned for the same day.

Last week, the editorial crew at SNL announced their intention to strike starting on April 1 as contract negotiations with NBCUniversal continue to stall over adequate pay, healthcare, and collective bargaining power. The 12-20 participating staff members are predominantly involved with editing the pre-taped sketches for the show. As the negotiations drag on, so does season 48 of SNL with the editorial crew’s help—until now.

“The season is almost over,” the Motion Picture Editors Guild recently wrote on Twitter. “Not only is NBCU saying no to the union’s reasonable proposals—by offering annual increases that lag behind industry standards, they’re pushing for a deal that ignores the soaring cost of living & moves the crew backward in future years.”

“NBCU has refused to show SNL’s post crew the respect they deserve,” the statement continues. “NBCU wants to shut us up—so we will yell louder. Plan to join us on the picket line April 1st.”

While NBCU says it hopes to meet a compromise with the staff by the end of the month, the chances of a strike remain high as April 1 crawls closer. As the striking members would comprise those involved with editing the pre-taped sketches, it’s not yet known what the production plans are for non-striking employees and if the number of live sketches would increase to fill any gaps. The union effort will mark the first time the show has been specifically targeted in a strike.

Lil Yachty is expected to join Brunson as the musical guest for the April 1 episode.

First Jimmy Kimmel and now this! Will the disrespect to this woman never end?

I thought that bit during Jenna Ortega’s monologue when they re-edited her tooth brushing commercial from when she was 9 I thought was a subtle plug from the editors about the importance of their job.

I thought the end of that commercial was already a little scary at the end.The editing didn’t add much.

It’s probably the writers’ fault, but yeah, the edited version was the visual equivalent of explaining the joke.

Since the sketches in question are PRE-taped, won’t they be in the can at least the day before the show?Unless the whole crew refuses to cross the picket line, which’d mean no show at all.

Hmm, hadn’t thought about that. SNL only has a short amount of time to prepare for each show though, so the editing might be worked on up until the last minute. Also I imagine the editors might not be too motivated to rush their work in the days before so that the strike would have minimal impact on the show.It would be interesting to see how the rest of the cast and crew would react to the strike if it happens. I’ve seen some of the cast posting about it, but I wonder if they’d actually join the picket line.

“They’re doing this on the day they *know* a woman of color is hosting?”-The Root, probably

    Never cross a picket line.

It would be a huge bummer if the strike hamstrung Quinta’s episode because she’d make a great host, but a small part of me wants to see what would happen. We’d at least still have the first season of A Black Lady Sketch Show. I’d also hope that as someone who advocates for teachers and was a comedian working her way up not too long ago, she’d be understanding of unionized workers wielding collective power.

A lot of the SNL cast got started as improv sketch people in a black box theater. They’ll be fine. They need one blank set and one game show set and the update set and that’s basically the evening.I really want the strikers to get what they want, but I also want to see an episode that tries to run without them.

“Both Quinta Brunson and SNL’s editorial crew have their own distinct plans for April 1”Were you, um, planning on mentioning either of the plans?
