Jessica Walter has died. The Emmy-winning actress, whose career spanned five decades, passed away in her sleep at home in New York City on Wednesday, March 24, Deadline reports. She was 80.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Walter had an early interest in acting, attending New York City’s High School of Performing Arts. She began her career in theater, winning a Clarence Derwent Award in 1963 for Outstanding Debut Broadway Performance in Photo Finish. She began her TV career in the early 60s, and in 1964, Walter made her feature film debut in Lilith. “It was exciting, because there was Warren Beatty, who was the star,” Walter told The A.V. Club in 2012. “He had just been in Splendor In The Grass. He was a huge, big star and [we had] a wonderful director named Robert Rossen who did All The King’s Men, The HustlerJean Seberg was in the movie, and she was quite the top of the game at the time. She had just been in Saint Joan for Otto Preminger. Actually, it was my first movie, and it was Gene Hackman’s first movie.”

Walter got her first Emmy win early in her career for 1975's Amy Prentiss. She was nominated again in 1977 and 1980 for her work on Streets of San Francisco and Trapper John M.D., respectively, and received her final Emmy nomination 25 years later for playing the outlandish Lucille Bluth on Arrested Development. Her portrayal as Lucille Bluth became a fan-favorite, recurrently referenced in memes and pop culture nearly two decades later.

The actress most recently guested on an episode of ABC’s American Housewife earlier this year as the title character’s grandmother, but her last series regular work was on the FXX animated series Archer, a show she’s admitted often went over her head. “I have no idea [what] half the things mean,” Walter told The A.V. Club in that 2012 interview of lines written for her character, Malory Archer. “I always have to ask, ‘What does this mean?’ because I’m not trendy…. Archer is probably the raciest thing I’ve ever done. Arrested Development wasn’t that racy. Anyone would know the references in that.” The actress also lent her instantly recognizable voice to other voice acting roles, including Dinosaurs, Wildfire, The Land Before Time, and Harley Quinn.

In lieu of flowers, Walter’s family asks that donations be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind.

RIP. 80 feels too soon for such an amazing actress.

Thank you, I was wondering that. Age seems like an odd thing to leave out of an obit.

I really thought Tambor would be first of the Arrested Development crowd. Did that show get a true ending? I haven’t gotten to the latest season.

      • characteractressmargomartindale-av says:

I don’t remember but I’d say it’s not really worth it. I wish I would have stopped after season 3.

      • borkborkbork123-av says:

You know what? I really enjoyed the second half of season 5 and thought it ended on a really good note…And then they kind of ruined it with “on the next Arrested Development”.So maybe watch it right up until then.

        • hommesexual-av says:

I hated all of season 5 anyway, but I completely agree about the ‘On the next’ right at the end ruining everything because it ruined one character so badly that the entire show is now tainted.Conversely, I think season 4 (the original, not the remix) is actually brilliant once you adapt to the massive change in style. Kinda like when a band does a really experimental album that’s jarring at first but once you acclimatise you see the brilliance.

      • darthpumpkin-av says:

I remember the last half of the last season being pretty meh, but I haven’t seen it in ages. Even before the news today, I didn’t really want a new season. The original cast was too dispersed (and Tambor was a no-go) and a lot of the behind-the-scenes talent that made the Fox run so great had moved on by the Netflix years. If they do anything more with AD, I’d much rather it be a spinoff starring Alia Shawkat with a new writing/production team.

Truly the MVP of everything she (or her voice) appeared in.

Great in PCU, great in Archer, especially great in Arrested Development. RIP.

  • chatandcut-av says:

She may not have gotten much of the Archer humor, but she was absolutely terrific delivering her lines as Mallory—a tough-as-nails ex-spy/Parkiest of Park Avenue Upper East Side Karen.

I also love how in the Archer grand prix episode, she informed the maître d’, “This isn’t my first Grand Prix, you know.” That was one reference I’m sure she 100% got.

she was absolutely terrific delivering her lines as Mallory

As stellar as all the voice-work is on Archer, she really was a stand-out. Lo Scandolo is one of my two favourite episodes, when she murders the Italian Prime Minister? (Doesn’t Italy use a king?)

    • gsaklol-av says:

May she be eating the absolute pants off some shrimp, forever & ever. RIP, Mrs. Walter.

    • doobie1-av says:

It blows my mind that she was apparently confused.  There’s not a hint of that in the performance.  Quick and confident in every line.

    • marteastwood47-av says:

Probably Arrested Development too, if it was ever going to get another season.

    • stormin-norman-av says:

Jeu Monegasque is the name of the episode. It’s absolutely spectacular and it’s a direct nod to her appearance in Grand Prix with James Garner in 1966 (one of the best driving movies to date).

    • cmartin101444-av says:

She was a delight in the “Archer” Comic-Con panels. She would occasionally seem shocked or bemused by the humor, but would give as good as she got when they were trading barbs and she was always kind and giving to the fans who asked questions of her.

    • disqus-trash-poster-av says:

I was at an Archer Live event in NYC in 2012. At one point a drunk guy came on the stage and did a dance before security walked him off. She then whispered to Aisha Tyler “was he part of the show?” She was so innocent about this world she helped make so funny but so clearly loved that she was brining joy to so many.

    • tokenaussie-av says:

“EVERYONE PUTS ONE IN THE CHIPPIE!!!”

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I think even if she didn’t understand every joke, she understood the character of Mallory, and could get the tone right based on that. She could nail the lines just by knowing how the other characters (and the audience) are meant to feel after she says them.

      • smithsfamousfarm-av says:

Everything you say there seems to get her entire repetoire. She got the characters, especially whatever her character was, so she went with it and it was, essentially, flawless. And don’t get me wrong, she was always glamorous, but in the 60′-70’s, I’m sorry, but she was a true dame. That will probably come across as sexist but if you’re hot, well…you’re hot.

    • dwarfandpliers-av says:

I hope someone explained her line about Ray getting “pegged” by a Vatican priest because that line (followed by her “I *just* got that” laugh) was hands-down one of my top 3 favorite lines EVER. The fact that she got to do Archer AND Arrested Development (which has one of my other favorite lines ever about George Bluth’s brother getting knocked out by a powerful lid) was a testament to her talent, because her talent + genius writing made unforgettable magic.

  • bio-wd-av says:

Well Archers done.  I cannot imagine the series without Walters, it would cease to be.  They won’t recast the role, nor should they.  If they were wise, one more season and done.  Sad to see her go, she never failed to put a smile on my face even in the worst of times.

    • weirdstalkersareweird-av says:

Yeah, like…I cannot fathom how mediocre the already-mediocre current Archer would get.

      • MannyBones-av says:

The last season and the space season were “okay.” The “danger Island” one I couldn’t be bothered to finish watching. But it’s long past it’s prime. I’d just like it to be wrapped up relatively neatly.

        • kinggojira-av says:

Danger Isalnd was the fun one out of the coma seasons.

        • weirdstalkersareweird-av says:

Yeah, I hear ya. I liked them all in their own way, but it was pretty clearly a “we’re bored, deal with it” kinda thing.

          • mythicfox-av says:

Adam Reed got bored enough to consider wrapping it up back in season 3 or 4. That’s why they started changing up the formula (starting with Archer Vice, and then later with the coma seasons), so he could keep himself interested.

          • weirdstalkersareweird-av says:

            Yep. And it shows.

          • inhuvelyn--av says:

Season 4 was the last great season, and it definitely had some duds. The Pam Drifting episode was definitely the first BAD episode of Archer.

        • feral-pizza-at-home-av says:

I took me maybe three tries to follow Danger Island because I lost interest midway. I always forgot the ending to Dreamland, but enjoyed 1999.

          • MannyBones-av says:

They’ve proven with the coma seasons that they can write other genres. They should just end Archer and move on to something new.

      • bio-wd-av says:

Pity.  I really liked the last season and felt it was improving, but now its time to start wrapping it up.

        • characteractressmargomartindale-av says:

Yes, after a couple/few kind of blah seasons the most recent one was solid and too short! But yes, please let’s just end it and not try to recast.

      • tokenaussie-av says:

It’s still an…ok…animated show. Which is damning with faint praise. It’s amazing how much of the wit and wordplay is lost – especially smash-cut wordplay gags where the final line of one scene is finished as a hilarious non-sequitur in the next scene. There’s also fewer jokes, with less of the screwball pacing…as well as, paradoxically, the humourous pauses (“Who vill also be shooting blanks, ja?” paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaause “Mm-hm!”)

    • kawaiigonjinn-av says:

its perfectly fine to replace actors in a show. say it with me “the actor is not the character.” You can replace Cas Anvar, without killing Alex Kamal. You can cast Ackroyd in the Ghostbusters reboot without him playing Ray Stantz. It’s bad for popular culture when we confuse actors and their roles.

      • kinjabelieveit-av says:

Meh, disagree in this case. It is voice acting work. Walter had such a distinctive way about her and the character loomed so large in the show that it would not be a good idea.

    • saltier-av says:

Sad but true. Her voice was just as essential to the show as H. Jon Benjamin and Aisha Tyler.

    • saltier-av says:

They can probably put together a few episodes with the recordings they have in the can, but this really is the exit sign for the series.

      • saltier-av says:

It sounds like she already recorded her parts for Archer Season 12, so it looks like we’ll get to enjoy her Malory Archer for one more bittersweet season.

    • adjectivebear-av says:

I think they’d only been planning one more, anyway.

    • normchomsky1-av says:

They needed to end the show at this point anyway. I wish they had done it already after the coma plot was wrapped up so Mallory could be there

      • MannyBones-av says:

The last season was supposed to be the end, but they got one more. Which I thought was good, because the last season ended quite anticlimactically.

        • normchomsky1-av says:

Archer learning to live without his mother seems like a logical end for his character and for hers to die, but she should still be here for the proper goodbye.

      • feral-pizza-at-home-av says:

That episode was just on FXX tonight. It was sweet that Malory was being Malory when Sterling got out of a coma, but noticed hints of her being by his side that whole time. It would’ve been a good ending.

    • notochordate-av says:

They didn’t recast Woodhouse so I’m hoping they’d make the same consideration here.

    • erikveland-av says:

Huh. I thought this last season was a return to form. I guess I was alone in thinking that.

    • south-of-heaven-av says:

Weirdly, I feel like they could craft one really good final season, where Archer uses Mallory’s death to finally move past being a pathetic man-child and takes over ISIS (or whatever the hell it’s called now).

    • dwarfandpliers-av says:

I *think* I read somewhere the upcoming season is already “in the can” but yeah, there’s no reason to continue beyond the upcoming season without her, it was kinda miraculous that last season was decent after the 3 previous stinker seasons, and the show would only be worse without her going forward anyway. (Weird that since season 6 ended I have hoped against hope that Archer would find its magic again, and now I’m just hoping they put it down with dignity.)

    • wakemein2024-av says:

    • dwarfandpliers-av says:

how many takes must she and Jason Bateman have needed to get past that line of dialogue without cracking up?  Jesus what a great show, and a great actress.

      • mrdalliard123-av says:

I always loved Michael’s reactions to Lucille’s statements as much as I loved the statements themselves. There is one moment when Lucille is complaining about her lack of control over Buster, and how he never brushes her hair anymore, and in the middle of talking Michael just looks at Lucille and Buster in a way that says “YOU TWO HAVE A CREEPY, UNHEALTHY ATTACHMENT TO EACH OTHER HE’S IN HIS ‘30’S WHAT THE HELL IS THE MATTER WITH YOU” without saying a damn thing, before continuing his lecture. 😄

        • dwarfandpliers-av says:

I was never a regular Arrested Development viewer, but I loved watching the compilations of Lucille’s many one-liners. My favorite was her glib comment to Michael that he’d had the only spouse she’d liked, and she had to be the one that had died. That’s a setup for Michael’s response, but Walters’ delivery is just so perfect, as well as such a revealing look into Lucille’s character. When George Segal passed away I was just remarking on how much I miss the stars of his prime (the ‘60s and ‘70s). Jessica was never as much of a star until later in her career, yet she had been working constantly for many years. As a result she almost seemed immortal, somehow. I should say – she was 80, what a life, she passed peacefully. But I just can’t fathom the news.I remember she was a guest star on one of the first Knots Landing episodes I ever watched (when it was repeated on TV Land or somewhere). She played a college friend of Michele Lee’s, who was a sophisticated businesswoman who went her own way, so much so that she ended up giving Lee’s daughter the “wrong” ideas on how to live her life. A very cliched part, yet Walter brought so much class and unique flair to the role that I took notice of her work. I never did forget her. I never will. And since they probably won’t be getting their own entries, RIP to the wonderful Richard Gilliland and muMs, who had their own memorable TV parts (mostly on Tom Fontana shows…) and never really got enough credit.

Walters was one of those actors who showed up in virtually every TV show I watched as a kid, and she always nailed it. She was a true pro.RIP

  • anthonypirtle-av says:

I only really knew her from Archer, but she was everything I loved about that show. I can’t imagine them doing it without her.

  • gilgurth-av says:

Do you want tears? Because this is how you get tears…RIP funny lady.

  • diabolik7-av says:

With this and the passing of Bertrand Tavernier it’s a pretty bad day all round. RIP two amazingly talented and intelligent people whose work has delighted so many.

  • toddisok-av says:

Bummer, I enjoyed her on that show.

  • andrewbare29-av says:

As a Boulder resident and Archer fan, please allow me to say: eat a dick, week.

  • mp81440-av says:

    NO.

  • the1969dodgechargerguy-av says:

Well that sucks to the 10th power. Walter’s voice work on Archer was one of the best things about the show.

  • psychopirate-av says:

Ah, this one hurts. Between Arrested Development and Archer, she was just amazing. I thought she sounded a little off during the last season of Archer, but hoped I was wrong. I will miss her terribly.

  • ser-bigbootewiggums-av says:

Fuck, this hurts. How will we ever know how much banana’s are worth now?

  • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

A goddamn legend. A true queen of the screen, and one of the funniest actors that I have ever had the pleasure of watching act. This ain’t just blowing smoke. Her work on Archer and Arrested Development are two of the funniest performances of the 21st century. Both shows will be less for her absence. This loss makes me so sad.

  • thecompletistgeek-av says:

    And she sings, too!

  • ifsometimesmaybe-av says:

    Fuck you, Reality. You suck.

  • nwrkhushrenada-av says:

    Sucks

  • praxinoscope-av says:

Emmy Prentiss?A gold star for anyone who gets that reference (and for being a Jessica Walter fan long before the rest of the pack.)

  • bashbash99-av says:

Sigh. to take my mind off of this i’m going to go see a star war.

  • ebau-av says:

RIP to one of the all-time great psychopaths. I’m getting Misty.

  • sicodravenshadow-av says:

I mean she will be missed and it is awesome that her family is supporting care for disabled pets.

  • cheetoquarantini-av says:

Any specifics on how she died? I mean, they keep saying “in her sleep,” but it’s not like she was 100 years old.–she was 80 and (seemed to be) fairly spry. Was she dealing with any other maladies?

  • typingbob-av says:

Man, she was good at sarcasm. Couldn’t be any dryer. Brilliant. R.I.P.

  • maymar-av says:

It’s a small detail, but Lucille’s perpetual excitement at Gene Parmesan’s was always delightful.

  • kleptrep-av says:

Go to hell 2021. Bring back 2020.

  • argentokaos-av says:

Jessica Walter as Morgan Le Fay is everything.

  • kojak3-av says:

I mean, how much can a funeral even cost? Five hundred dollars?

  • RaoulRaoul-av says:

In their memorial tweet, the Jim Henson Company tweeted that she was the voice of Fran Sinclair in Dinosaurs, the early ‘90s sitcom. I had no idea, and frankly, I find it hard to believe she was in such a (relatively) straight sitcom housewife role.
Walter was also Morgan le Fay in the 1978 TV-movie version of Doctor Strange, something I very much want to see now. I’m a little sad Marvel never got her into the MCU proper, but we can’t get everything we want — people in hell want ice water, as Malory said.

    • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

While the humor wasn’t the sort of biting type that has become popular in the wake of The Simpsons, Dinosaurs was interesting in that pretty much all of the parts were voiced by noted actors. Typically up to that point voice work in animation/puppeteering was kind of its own world, and while there might be famous guest stars the main cast would be full-time voice actors (or puppeteers doing both the voice and the hand work).

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Oh, wow. I was just thinking the other day about how her husband had died not long ago, but at least we still had Jessica Walter. She gave what I genuinely believe to be the greatest line delivery in sitcom history on ‘Arrested Development’: “They don’t allow you to have bees in here.”

  • alferd-packer-av says:

I only know her from Archer and Arrested Development but she was at the (superbly cold) heart of those shows. I will not be having paella tonight, out of respect.

  • jonesj5-av says:

No mention of Play Misty for Me?

  • ijohng00-av says:

“here’s some money. go see a star war”. xxx

  • shadowplay-av says:

We started watching Dinosaurs with my kids since it came to Disney+, and I was surprised she voiced the Mom. Such a down to earth matriarch, compared to her acerbic matriarch from Arrested Development and Archer.

  • TeoFabulous-av says:

Lucille Bluth, yes, but she’ll always be Pat Stoddard to me.

  • cliffy73-disqus-av says:

Just last night my daughter left a half-eaten orange out, and guess what we have now?R.I.P.

  • oarfishmetme-av says:

“Here’s some money. Go see a Star War.”Now there’s TWO reasons that line makes me feel wistful and nostalgic.

  • elegymachine-av says:

“Here’s some money. Go see a star war.”

  • hateclowns-av says:

Are we sure Dr. Fishman didn’t just say it looks like she’s dead?

  • noturtles-av says:

Lucille Bluth might be my favorite TV character ever. I think I’ll watch some AD episodes tonight in her honor.https://screenrant.com/arrested-development-lucille-bluth-quotes/
