Scott “Rock Action” Asheton, drummer for The Stooges, has died. He was 64, and the cause of his death has not yet been confirmed.
In a post on Facebook, Stooges frontman Iggy Pop addressed Asheton’s death, saying that the drummer “was a great artist,” and that both Scott Asheton and his late brother Ron “have always been and continue to be a second family to” him.
Asheton, along with brother Ron, Iggy Pop, and Dave Alexander, helped found The Stooges back in 1967. The band released three excellent records—1969’s The Stooges, 1970’s Fun House, and 1973’s Raw Power—before breaking up in 1974. The band reunited in 2003, putting out two records since then, 2007’s The Weirdness and last year’s Ready To Die. Asheton left in 2011 following a life-threatening stroke, mostly yielding touring duties to Tobby Dammit. Other than Pop, Asheton had been the only original member of the Stooges since the 2009 death of his brother.
Asheton and the rest of The Stooges were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2010.
