In 2023, we mourned the loss of a number of groundbreaking directors, visionary actors, and generational musicians who made an indelible impact on pop culture during their time on Earth. From Norman Lear to William Friedkin, from Matthew Perry to Paul Reubens, from Tina Turner to Tony Bennett, The A.V. Club pays tribute to all of the these talented artists and their many contributions.

Best known for his role on ABC’s Eight Is Enough, Adam Rich also made appearances on other television series throughout the ’80s and ’90s, including The Love Boat, The Six Million Dollar Man, St. Elsewhere, and Baywatch. His last major role occurred in 2003, when he played himself in the David Spade comedy .Rich suffered from addiction issues that contributed to legal trouble over the years, including an arrest in 1991 for attempting to break into a pharmacy, per the AP. He was open about his experiences with mental illness; publicist Danny Deraney told the outlet that the actor’s depression “defied treatment.”“Adam was simply a wonderful guy. He was kind, generous and a warrior in the fight against mental illness,” Deraney shared in a statement posted to . “Adam did not have an ounce of ego. He was unselfish and always looked out for those he cared about. Which is why many people who grew up with him feel a part of their childhood gone, and sad today. He really was Americas Little Brother.” [Mary Kate Carr]

Remembering the clicks we want in 2023

  • bythebeardofdemisroussos-av says:

Next up, a retrospective of the halcyon days of January 2023.

  • capnjack2-av says:

    This is gross.

We are 18 days into 2023. These are all people who have freshly passed and phrasing it like this makes it seem like a joke at their expense. On top of that, it’s a blatant grab for attention as no one, in 18 days, who cares about this stuff, have missed that these celebrities died.

    Do better.

Thank you! Seeing the headline “Remembering the Stars we lost in 2023″ on the 18th of January 2023, I actually chuckled as I was pretty sure they weren’t serious, and thought it must be the headline for an AV Club tongue-in-cheek article that maybe acknowledges/responds to the countless comments pointing out how tacky it was in 2022 to keep having that list trotted out and updated every few weeks. But no, they are actually serious! (It’s kinda gross)I commented (twice) that it was quite the omission for the AV Club not to have an RIP article for Gina Lollobrigida – now I’m wondering if maybe someone read my comments and thought, “Hey, we messed up – I know! let’s slot her in with the others we did write about … in a Remembering the Stars slideshow! Never too early for one of those!”

      • cariocalondoner-av says:

Gina Lollabrigida made her English language debut in 1953 with John Ford’s Beat The Devil, but she had already made over 20 films in Eurore before arriving stateside, per The New York Times. Lollabrigida went on to make a significant impact on the U.S. film indurstry in the 1950s and 60s, starring in films like Trapeze, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Come SeptemberDamn, they got her name spelled right in the heading above the photo, then proceeded to misspell it everywhere else!Interesting to learn she was big in some mystical place called “Eurore”. Oh, and she made a big impact on the US film indurstry, yezzurrr!!

    • gumbercules1-av says:

I honestly thought they made an error and meant 2022. Nope.

    • drkschtz-av says:

Almost seems more like a mistake. They might keep the running article in the publisher software all year and write the blurbs as deaths happen, then publish it at the end of the year.

    • verymadmax-av says:

      fresh is better than rotten.

    • dsgagfdaedsg-av says:

Little did you know they would return to it every few weeks when a new celebrity died, like a serial killer returning to fuck a corpse one last time.

  • ospoesandbohs-av says:

    It’s January.

  • cannabuzz-av says:

Also dead in 2023 – any sense of taste or decorum at the AV Club.

  • razzle-bazzle-av says:

I saw someone post this idea for an “article” as a joke in the comments the other day. I guess someone in charge saw the same comment but didn’t realize it was a joke.

  • captain-impulse-av says:

18 days in, and we’re doing this? This is beyond scraping the bottom of the barrel. You’ve gone and scraped through the bottom, and dug yourself into a six foot grave. You should be fucking embarrassed by this attempt at “journalism” for (apparently, rage) clicks.

  • ksmithksmith-av says:

I’m a data-driven kind of guy, so every time this slideshow comes up I’m going to record how long it’s been since the previous posting and how many new people are on the list. Last year after about mid-year the list was reposted again after three new stars died, and the time between postings averaged around 14 days, but varied from about five up to 28 days. Why am I doing this? I don’t know. Let’s start:First appearance of the year on 1/18, five stars dead, 18 days since the beginning of the year.

    • ghboyette-av says:

      Keeping up with this?

      • ksmithksmith-av says:

Thanks! I was on vacation.Unlike in 2022, the AVClub is showing restraint and good taste this calendar year, so this isn’t as fun as I thought it would be. It looks like the most recent update was on 6/30, which is 163 days since the previous update. Twenty-seven new people on the list gives us and average of one (AVClub-worthy) celebrity death about every six days. Again, this isn’t as interesting when the list isn’t ghoulishly updated every couple weeks, but there’s plenty of time in 2023 for the AVClub to dive back into tastelessness. On a personal note, the death of Cormac McCarthy hit me hard. Besides a few bits of small talk, I didn’t know the guy, but I’ve known his youngest son since he was a child. (There are divots in our driveway from where Cormac’s much-too-powerful pickup spun out picking him up from a playdate with my son.) He’s a really great guy with great moral character, and given his father’s success and wealth, that could have easily gone the other direction. Send some good feelings his way, because he lost his father, and all this celebrity stuff must make it a lot harder.

        • ghboyette-av says:

That’s a great anecdote, and Cormac’s death hit me the hardest on this list. I don’t think I’ll see another writer of his caliber in my lifetime. It makes a lot of sense that he would have raised a good person. Thank you for sharing that, and for what it’s worth, I’m genuinely glad I got to communicate with you as well.

        • ksmithksmith-av says:

It’s August 10th, and there’s a total of 35 people on the list. There have been five more added in the last 41 days, which is about one per eight days. The overall rate since January 1 is about one per 6.3 days. The previous time between updates was 163 days, so AVClub has increased its ghoulishness by a factor of four.

          • ksmithksmith-av says:

You know, this slideshow isn’t showing up in the regular “latest” chain of posts anymore, and I’m not going to search for it every few days, so I’m not going to do this anymore. Having to search for data is the least fun part of data analysis.

  • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

Not just posting but re-posting this in January.Fuuuuuuck you AV Club.

  • terranigma-av says:

Hey why is there no POC in the title picture??

  • wereallywenttothemoon-av says:

.Just a thought, but when you’re showing images of celebrities who have recently died you might want to include their birthdate and date of death right next to their name (or simply their age at death next to their name), since the first question most people will have will be, when were they born, and how old were they when they died (and may not want to read all the descriptions for all the photos to try and find that information)…..

  • ghboyette-av says:

Was wondering how soon this would be updated after Arkin died. Honestly, a respectful amount of time.

  • malee23-av says:

Have you been scammed of your money by fake brokers promising you returns on your investment and end up not fulfilling their many promises? Well I was a victim of such an ugly situation, I invested $150,000 in a particular crypto broker that promised me 50% of my investment weekly, it was such a tempting offer and like anyone else I invested in it, and after a week from the day I invested I contacted the broker for my profits and I received no reply, at first I kept my cool but after so many attempts to contact them I lost it, I was so devastated and broken…For weeks I wasn’t myself and it had begun to tell on me until I read an online article on how someone like me was able to recover his funds from scammers. I read it carefully and closely and saw the email of the hacker that helped him recover his money from hackers. I contact the hacker and explained everything to him, and we discussed everything I wasn’t going to make a payment because I wasn’t sure of the hacker but he proved his authenticity and helped me recover my money…I was so happy, I never felt happiness like that in my life before…all thanks to Eric Nelson for a job well done, if you find yourself in a situation like mine contact him at getbackyourasset(@)gmail . com.

I’ve been annoyed since yesterday that there wasn’t a Robbie Robertson obit. Now I’m even more annoyed they didn’t manage to include him in the stupid slideshow.

Turner Classic Movies always makes these into true pieces of art, and they really outdid themselves this year.

Well, the inevitable re-posting when it should have been posted in the first place. We made it, AVCommenters! All snark aside, I appreciate how comprehensive this list is.
And as a film buff, nothing makes me quite so extra-sad as the loss of great character actors and composers.
