With the second season of HBO’s pitch-black, faith-based comedy The Righteous Gemstones entering its back half, the power dynamics of the immediate family are changing. No longer able to pull rank because he’s the oldest, Jesse (Danny McBride) has seen his assumed dominance take a big hit. The same goes for Kelvin (Adam Devine), as he loses his grip on the God Squad.
Meanwhile, newcomers to the Gemstone ministry are surging up the leader board, indicating that blood isn’t the only thing that matters to family patriarch Eli (John Goodman).
For the rest of this season, we’ll track the key players to determine each week which Gemstone shines the brightest—and which one is basically coal.

Not wholly different than when they say the show is funny. It’s at least the third-funniest Danny McBride comedy series. HBO must throw mad PR money at it.
You’re entitled to be as wrong as you want to be. Everyone else knows his series have gotten better each time, as he’s expanded the side characters more and more.
I’m willing to admit to being wrong. Everyone seems to love this show – I just don’t find it very funny. Maybe it’s my deep, deep contempt for religion and the religious. I already envision these types of people as clowns and hypocrites, so there’s no shock value to seeing them murder, fuck, and take drugs. I watch it and I recall laughing out loud at one joke in the latest episode. Walter Goggins and Edi Patterson steal every scene they’re in.
It’s all opinion man, it’s cool. I was going to say the reason I think I like his later series more than EB&D is that the Edi Patterson’s and Goggins (to say nothing of John Goodman, who is always great) have bigger and better parts. I do love EB&D but it’s all about Kenny fucking Powers, even if Will Ferrell as Ric Flair’s plums is an all time great character and bit.
Me: I’m never looking at another goddamn slideshow. It’s an outdated ploy to get more clicks. AV Club: Here’s a Righteous Gemstones slideshow.Me: Fuck. You win, Spanfeller. You win.
the way they have dressed Kelvin this season has been. It must be a comedy actor’s dream to be able to make people LOL the instant you enter a scene, without even opening your mouth.
Judy was on my worst of the family for more than 2 weeks (after laughing at and with her last season) but then she breaks ahead of the pack this week by actual doing something decent after she at 1st whinned like a little child about Baby Billy’s wife staying with her.I would still have Eli as #2 but Judy and BJ are for sure 3/4.Now my god is Kelvin the worst, like Jesse is 2nd worst but Kelvin blew him out the fucking water. Can we make Baby Billy a full Gemstone, I know he isn’t but fuck he would be my #6 this week and he ran away from another wife and kid!
He’s not a baby; he’s a slender, silver-haired man in his late 60s.
That line absolutely made my day.
His wife is so likeable and pathetic at the same time she even melted Judy’s ice-covered heart this week with the pleading “just tell me he’s not dead!”.
Yeah she really made me feel sad for her as well after thinking nothing of her character. It was great to see that get through to Judy.
