It’s a good thing Bradley Cooper doesn’t actually have Homelander’s powers from The Boys, as some observers joked on Twitter/X earlier this month after the actor seemed, well, less than thrilled about his Golden Globes loss. If so, Rob Lowe would probably be nothing more than a smoldering pile of lasered ashes by now.

In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Lowe admitted that he accidentally rubbed some pretty major salt in Cooper’s Best Male Actor In A Motion Picture-shaped wound. “Downey (Jr.) does this amazing acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, and I’m so excited for him so I text him, ‘So glad you won. That is the most beautiful acceptance speech I’ve heard in a long time. Boy, do you deserve it,’” Lowe recalled. Sweet, right? “I hit it and I realize, ‘Oh, shit. I just sent that to Bradley Cooper.’”

Cooper, who was nominated for his portrayal of Leonard Bernstein in Maestro, lost in his category to Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy, a fact which Lowe tried to correct for right away. “I said, ‘No, no, I meant that for Robert Downey Jr.,’” he said. “Now that’s even worse! I made the guy feel worse! It was terrible.” Not only that, but Lowe went on to do it again the second time he tried to congratulate his friend.

Lowe, at least, says the confusion was caused because he accidentally “inputted the wrong numbers into the wrong names” on his phone. Sure, Rob. It’s totally believable that you just happened to switch out the number of a man you’ve known since high school for one who was already having a bad night… that you then made worse. Not that this means the snafu was intentionally malicious in any way. More likely, the West Wing actor was looking at Cooper on his screen while texting Downey and accidentally typed in the wrong name. Celebrities… they’re just like us!

From his response, it sounds like Cooper wasn’t too put out by the whole kerfuffle in the end. “He literally said, ‘No, no, no. It’s fine. I like living vicariously through these mistakes,’” Lowe shared. Still, this seems like pretty fertile territory for some future project. Maybe the whole incident will inspire Cooper’s next Golden Globe nominated film, a high concept, Beef-style drama spurred on by one little mistaken text.

I don’t get the Homelander joke. Is someone mistaking Cooper for Anthony Starr?

Man, I know this feeling so well, but for me, I was always trying to text friend B to talk shit about friend A, but often managed to send it to friend A instead (for the record, he sucked and needed to hear it, but still, goddamn.)
