Following up on his Oscar-kissing movie, Parasite, Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho is putting Robert Pattinson in an MRI machine. At least, that’s what we can glean from the teaser for his new film, Mickey 17, opening March 2024. Based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, Mickey 17 follows Robert Pattinson as an “expendable” yet “regenerative” employee of an ice planet mining operation. When one miner, another Mickey is 3-D printed to take his place. If that sounds familiar, it’s because that’s how the U.S. economy works, too.

In the teaser, Bong’s swirling camera sees “Mickey” in a tanning bed straight out of a Paul Verhoven movie. We assume that’s the 3-D printer. But according to the book’s synopsis, Mickey 17 goes missing on a mission, opening a position for another Mickey. Ouch! There’s nothing worse than having to kill the clone that took your job. Mickey 17 must survive on a foreign planet without being discovered as a duplicate. If caught, Mickey will get tossed into a high-tech wood chipper to harvest his protein. The future sounds great.

Mickey 17 – In theaters 03.29.2024

Joining Pattinson are Steven Yeun (Minari), Naomi Ackie (I Want To Dance With Somebody), Toni Collette (Hereditary), and Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac). Will they also be jumping into that spinning tanning booth from the future, or will these actors play the heartless employers hellbent on disposing of our hero?

Based on the unfortunately formatted teaser (can studios stop releasing vertical trailers?), Mickey 17 returns Bong to his sci-fi interests a la Snowpiercer. The plot, too, resembles his highspeed train epic, with its class warfare and disposable underclass. That sort of thing never goes out of style.

Mickey 17 opens on March 29, 2024.

I came across a quote literally just a couple of minutes ago that’s topically relevant: “Today, there are people of all walks of life living in all kinds of hurt
who think their pain is caused by phenomena that are downstream of
    corporate power.” – Cory Doctorow

This is the exact plot of the movie “Moon” with Sam Rockwell.

Pretty much exactly what popped into mind for me reading the synopsis.Man, did Warcraft really just kill Duncan Jones’ career as a visionary director? Also… remember that there was a Warcraft movie!?

      • noisetanknick-av says:

Weirdly, Warcraft is one of the most successful video game-to-film adaptations ever because it did very, VERY well in China. (But everywhere else…not so much.)

i think it was that middling netflix movie with paul rudd.

    • luasdublin-av says:

If it sticks to the book , it’s actually got very little in common with Moon , other than featuring a clone working in space .

  • specialcharactersnotallowed-av says:

[POSSIBLE SPOILER FOR A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MOVIE] Sounds like a more actiony/thrillery take on the premise of Moon. Not in the technical details, but in broad terms. Also, I think you some words.“When one miner, another Mickey is 3-D printed to take his place.”

Well, we did have Mickey One way back in 1965, so I’d say that we’re way overdue for Mickey 17.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I assumed they meant March 2023. Why are we getting trailers for films over a year away? I’m honestly not sure if I can book it off work that far ahead.

  • BlueSeraph-av says:

The concept has been done many a times. I would see it, but not because it’s a novel idea. Far from it. I would see it in hopes that it takes that concept and does it well. It’s all about the execution. This premise is done poorly more often than done well. The 6th Day or Gemini Man were done poorly. But if done right, it could be entertaining as Moon.

Interesting premise. Where can I pick up one of these Robert Pattinson Printers?

  • themightymanotaur-av says:

Like a Leonard Part 6 sort of thing? Just without the puddin’ pops and sexual assualt?

  • tmontgomery-av says:

Ugh. A derivative thriller starring Robert Pattinson is never a good thing. I’ll be processing Bong’s headscratching career choice for a little while. Pattinson continues to seek acceptance as a serious actor but will achieve barely incremental results. The taste in projects is there but not the foundational talent.

    • kinosthesis-av says:

He was sensational in Good Time. Dude can act.

      • tmontgomery-av says:

I’ll own the fact I can’t be objective about Pattinson. He irks me for no good reason. Still, he always seems overly mannered and reticent. He takes chances, though.

A derivative thriller starring a derivative Robert Pattinson.(I liked him in The Lighthouse, but then, that movie was so wacked out, I think anyone would’ve been great)

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

you need to update your software, everyone likes and respects pattinson now.

  • gregorbarclaymedia-av says:

Wait, this movie is 18 months away? Why on earth release a trailer this early?

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Are any of these Mickey’s fine? Are they sufficiently fine as to blow someone’s mind?

  • frasier-crane-av says:

Um, Matty? “Mickey One” is a well-regarded Warren Beatty film directed by the great Arthur Penn, one of the first that brought New Wave editing techniques to US films. So, yet another cutesy joke well-fumbled.

When one miner, another Mickey is 3-D printed to take his place.Where’s that volunteer proofreader guy?

  • stevegilpin-av says:

It’s Paul Verhoeven, not Verhoven. Sorry to be that guy but he’s one of my favorite directors.
