Back in spring 2020, in a GQ interview that should be treated as a historical document about the lockdown, Robert Pattinson shared that he was “barely doing anything” to work out while in the midst of playing Batman. This was, of course, one of the most controversial things an actor playing a comic book hero could possibly say, and his comments were scrutinized by fans. In a new conversation with ES Magazine, the Good Time star clarifies that he was joking about his training regime for The Batman.

“I got in so much trouble for saying that I don’t work out, even from my trainer, who was like, ‘Why would you say that?’” Pattinson tells ES (via Variety), adding, “[It’s] quite embarrassing when you get into a pattern of answering questions about your workout because there’ll always be a guy who’s in better shape than you.”

The expectations for action stars’ appearances have obviously changed over the years; Pattinson noted “No one was doing this in the ’70s” when speaking to GQ in 2020. While the one-time Twilight hunk tells ES that he doesn’t struggle with body image, he opens up about his relationship with diet culture.

“[It’s] very, very easy to fall into that pattern as well, even if you’re just watching your calorie intake, it’s extraordinarily addictive—and you don’t quite realize how insidious it is until it’s too late,” he says. “I have basically tried every fad you can think of, everything except consistency. I once ate nothing but potatoes for two weeks, as a detox. Just boiled potatoes and Himalayan pink salt. Apparently it’s a cleanse…you definitely lose weight. And I tried to do keto once. I was like, ‘Oh, there’s a diet where you just eat charcuterie boards and cheese all the time?’ But I didn’t realize that you can’t have beer as it completely defeats the purpose.”

Pattinson is currently at work on the new Bong Joon-Ho film Mickey 17. Warner Bros. Pictures has already shared a first look at the project, anticipated for a March 2024 release.

Going the Pattinson route didn’t go so wonderfully for Cronenberg, I hope Director Bong has better luck.  Even if RPatz has put in some quality work, there are other people I’d rather see the greatest living directors working with.

“Good Time” by the Safdie Brothers is an amazing film completely centered on Pattinson’s dirtbag performance. After seeing that, I’ll try watching him in anything.

      • anathanoffillions-av says:

That is a very good movie and performance. He’s also good in Lost City of Z (where he appears to be playing…John Lennon?), High Life, and several other movies…he was even enjoyably absurd in The King.  he’s paid his dues but…there are other actors out there.  That said, better him than Aaron Taylor-Johnszzzzzzzzzzzzz

Cosmopolis was pretty good IMO. He’s fine in it, and any issues the film has are more down to the trickiness of the source material than anything. It’s a hard book to adapt.

yeah, he’s fine in it. It was surprising at the time he was fine. All I’m saying is that…this isn’t Viggo Mortensen’s collaboration with Cronenberg. This isn’t Song Kang-ho’s collaboration with Bong Joon-ho. I guess Chalamet and that Guadagnino dude are trying to do it, but they’re not exactly Jean-Pierre Leaud and Truffaut, they’re not Mifune (or Shimura) and Kurosawa, they’re not McLachlan or Dern and Lynch, they’re not any of six actors including Von Sydow and Bergman, Kinski (or Bruno S) and Herzog. I’m just overall underwhelmed by most of today’s firepower.  I mean Pattinson is fine but Bong Joon-ho is one of the greatest directors alive and this is the best we can get him.  I suppose when Wong Kar-wai came here for My Blueberry Nights that fucking sucked too, he had friggin Jude Law.

Cosmopolis is a great film and I quite liked Map to the Stars

One thing I don’t really understand about “cleanses” is how people don’t generally get that eating or drinking just one thing is by its very nature going to basically flush everything but that one thing out of your system. You could probably do a cotton candy cleanse for two weeks, and presuming you didn’t die of hyperglycemia, you’d probably find your body cleansed of a whole lot of other stuff that it normally has.
I do love the idea of him specifically using pink Himalayan salt, though. Better get rid of all that pesky iodide.

    Dude is so effortlessly cool.

Fun fact about keto. Guinness is fine. Get back at it, Pattinson! — signed, guy who definitely won’t go back on keto

    • sonicyouth-av says:

The carbs in Guinness will take you out of ketosis pretty quickly. Definitely not keto friendly

The football (that is to say, soccer) player Kevin Keegan was very undersized as a youngster in the late 1960s/70s, he was put on a Steak, eggs and Guinness diet to bulk him up/help him grow.He remained a shortarse but it apparently worked, he was a great player by all accounts.

Guinness is literally one of the highest carb beers in existence 🤦‍♀️

Guy lies for funnsies and f*cks with interviewers (maybe they deserve it). I don’t think he’s a brilliant actor either, but it’s really interesting how he seems to have more passionate male fans than female fans.

Well, it does cause conversation as people try to read between the line, especially bodybuilding people.Long story short, Holywood “superheroes” have steroids and gear (all sorts of medicine and supplement mostly hormonal supplements) problem. And yes, most marvel heroes and the rock is being pointed by many body builders of guilty of using that. Not everyone use it, but Bodybuilders take the message from Pattinson as “i don’t want to use all of that thing just to bulk up for batman”. Which they take in as very positive message.
especially many cough *marvel* cough people lies about how they manage to gain that body in a year, or maintain that level of muscle mass in their advanced age like the rock. Mind you, they still need to do the work out to earn the muscle but yeah, they won’t earn that much of muscle in a year without “help”

He’s right about the stars in the 70s and 80s… Adam West was one cheeseburger away from a dad bod. Even though Christopher Reeves was broad-shouldered and had pecs and biceps he was hardly shredded, ditto Michael Keaton. Lou Ferigno was obviously enormous and cut but he started out as a body builder and got into acting, not the other way around.
