The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced a (mostly) fresh slate of artists up for induction into the body of legendary artists. The 14 artists up for entry include Joy Division, The White Stripes, Willie Nelson, Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, George Michael, and more.

While most of these artists fall under the purview of the rock genre, as Dolly Parton discovered last year, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has become more of a catchall for impactful artists across genres, including rap, country, and pop. Parton ended up entering the Hall of Fame last year alongside Eminem, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Carly Simon, Lionel Richie, and Pat Benatar.

With this round of nominations, Bush becomes a four-time nominee for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. It seems as though this writer’s manifestations for her entry were so powerful, Bush ended up landing a number-one hit in several countries for a song she penned nearly forty years ago, and was launched into the cultural conversation once more. Bush was already primed to cinch the nomination, and hopefully, the global resurgence of “Running Up That Hill” will solidify her entry this year.

Other repeat nominees include A Tribe Called Quest, Soundgarden, Iron Maiden, and for the fifth time, Rage Against The Machine. As per the rules of the Hall of Fame, an artist only becomes eligible for induction 25 years after their first commercial recording. Last year, Eminem was the sole nominee who was up for induction in his first qualifying year. For 2023, the White Stripes and Missy Elliott have made the shortlist in their first year of eligibility.

See the full list of 2023 nominees below:

A Tribe Called Quest
Kate Bush
Sheryl Crow
Missy Elliott
Iron Maiden
Joy Division/New Order
Cyndi Lauper
George Michael
Willie Nelson
Rage Against the Machine
Soundgarden
The Spinners
The White Stripes
Warren Zevon

Official inductees will be announced in May, with the ceremony taking place later this fall.

Hm. I would have Cyndi Lauper, Kate Bush, George Michael, Rage against the Machine, and Warren Zevon

    • bio-wd-av says:

Same.  Love Willy but I don’t know about him making it.  He probably will.

      • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

I agree, Willie is awesome but I don’t see the fit really

legendary & deserving status aside, it’s a popularity contest, and all the cool people love willie.
they’ll probably jump on the kate bush bandwagon. maybe soundgarden because they love dead people.
sheryl crow might also make it in; she’s totally enmeshed in the industry crowd.
it would be nice if missy elliott made it in the HoF because she deserves all the accolades in the world.

Kate Bush, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Willie Nelson & White Stripes for me, but there aren’t really any bad choices on this list

  • uncleump-av says:

If we are basing it on influence/legacy than I think it should go to Kate Bush, Missy Elliott, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes, and Warren Zevon. It kills me but Cyndi Lauper shouldn’t be in there despite having one of the most perfect pop albums of the 80’s. Considering Tom Morello in so deeply involved with the Hall of Fame, Rage is pretty much a lock even though, as far as I’m concerned, they can fuck off to FuckOffLand.

What’s your beef with Rage Against The Machine? That Paul Ryan picked them as one of his favorite band’s?

      • uncleump-av says:

That Paul Ryan picked them as one of his favorite band’s?Essentially. They sold progressive politics at stadium prices. They were a corporate rock band screaming about corporations, millionaires complaining about billionaires. They would have videos mocking Gap for making their clothes in overseas sweatshops when they use those same overseas sweatshops to make their cheap t-shirts that you can get at Target. There is a reason why they are the favorite band of Republican politicians and why Anti-Vaxers and Proudboys and Blue Lives Matter protesters sing their lyrics during rallies. Because, ultimately, they were a bunch of hypocrites doing whatever made money. They had just as much integrity as everybody else on the Godzilla soundtrack. And, let’s face it, musically, they were another Nu-Metal band from 90’s. Not as noxious as Limp Bizkit, not as interesting as System of a Down, not as deserving of a Hall of Fame nod as Faith No More.

This is my new favourite rant.

        • theodorefrost---absolutelyhateskinja-av says:

I agree to degree about hypocrisy in an extent, but I would say almost every single band that’s ever existed, including the ones I also like that you named, has had clothes made overseas. As for the conservatives not getting the irony, the idiots like Paul Ryan and others are just morons who misinterpret any lyrics and think anything remotely punk or rebellious is akin to them wanting to start a war against the government. They will co-opt The Punisher, Batman, Pepe the frog, Rage Against the Machine, whatever, it doesn’t matter.

As the straight guy who is the biggest fan of Cyndi Lauper, I cannot go along with this

      • uncleump-av says:

Hey, if the criteria is just being awesome then, yeah, Cyndi should be in. She’s So Unusual is an outstanding record and she’s done a ton of great stuff since. Hell, not only does she have a well deserved Tony, but she is the only woman to a have a Tony for sole credit for Best Score. That’s amazing.(On top of that, “A Christmas Duel”, her collaboration with the Hives, is one of my favorite Christmas songs ever!)That said, she doesn’t have much influence on artists that followed her. You take her out of existence and it doesn’t change the musical landscape one iota. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of people in the Hall that have no influence and worse catalogs than Cyndi but I just don’t think there should be. I still have some stupid, long disregarded sentiment that the Hall should have stronger criteria and mean something more than it does.

        • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

I particularly love Cyndi’s Memphis Blues album, and of course She’s So Unusual. But I can’t really be objective, I just love her. But wow, her voice

  • fireupabove-av says:

I’m hoping Dolly getting in will help get Willie in. The dude has contributions to basically every genre of music across several decades. Aside from his own great recordings, his songs have been done by everyone from Aretha & Roy Orbison to Snoop Dogg & Jello Biafra. He should be in every music hall of fame possible.

  • captain-splendid-av says:

Motherfucker. An absolute banger of a list (plus Sheryl Crow), but the fucking White Stripes?  Christ on a crutch.

  • highlikeaneagle-av says:

It’s a good list. Maybe I’m getting soft and accepting in my old age, but let ‘em all in. Sounds like a party…

    • theodorefrost---absolutelyhateskinja-av says:

I hate the arbitrary cap they put on. Almost always the majority of the nominees deserve to get in. I’d agree with this year. The Spinners took me a minute to remember (so many doo-wop era groups) but I don’t see any reason to not include them all.

  • bio-wd-av says:

I swear to god Warren Zevon better make it in.

  • koreshnugent-av says:

Such lightweight horseshit, and over so many more deserving artists. How about:King CrimsonMC5DevoThe New York DollsBlack FlagBjörkThe Replacements

    • drewtopia22-av says:

Some of my favorites. Bjork will probably get in eventually. Devo doesn’t dress like they walked out of either CBGB or a steinbeck novel so they lose points with wenner. Crimson and The Replacements are way too under the radar, more of “your favorite artist’s favorite artist” and never had big mainstream success. MC5 and New York Dolls are highly influential and get name dropped by high falutin hipsters but i wonder if their window to get in has passed. Also worth noting that the hall hates jazz fusion as much as or maybe more than prog rock

  • scortius-av says:

From that list? I mean I don’t care about the rock hall, but i’d go with Willie Nelson
    Kate Bush
    Iron Maiden
    Joy Division/New Order
    Warren Zevon

  • panthercougar-av says:

Warren Zevon is criminally underappreciated by the masses. He was a great lyricist. Also, I hope Iron Maiden gets in.
