Salma Hayek is set to replace Thandiwe Newton in Magic Mike’s Last Dance, now filming in London.

As reported by Deadline, Warner Bros. issued a statement reading, “Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to step away from the production of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance to deal with family matters.”

Last year, Hayek appeared in House Of Gucci and Eternals. Prime Video recently premiered Newton’s latest project All The Old Knives.

Unlike Channing Tatum’s abs, plot details for Magic Mike’s Last Dance have been kept under wraps so far. However, he told Variety earlier this year that “It’s going to have a really strong, almost stronger than Mike, character that’s female…We’ve never done a traditional love story, and this isn’t a traditional love story.”

It is also unknown if previous co-stars such as Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, and Donald Glover will be reprising their roles. Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Reid Carolin are confirmed to be returning, continuing their long-running collaboration with Tatum.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance is the third and final installment in the series, following 2012's Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL in 2015. The dance drama and life-affirming road trip comedy inspired the stage show Magic Mike Live, which is on tour now. There was also the reality series Finding Magic Mike on HBO Max, in which aspiring dancers competed for an opportunity to perform in the live show.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance is set to be an HBO Max original, which seems like a weird choice after Magic Mike XXL immediately became known as a delightful theatergoing experience, but hey, whatever gets this movie into the people’s eyeballs! Soderbergh began a three-year overall deal with HBO Max and HBO in 2020, which has already yielded the films Let Them All Talk, No Sudden Move, and Kimi.

interesting that the story of Newton being fired after her and Tatum argued over the Smith/Rock incident didn’t make it into this story.

  • iamcuriousmauve-av says:

It’s good to see the studio PR machines are running at full strength – because stories are starting to appear that say “stepped away to deal with family matters” in this case equals “fired after furious argument with Channing Tatum over Oscar slap.”

She made the difficult decision to step away? She was fired.

She made the difficult decision to step away? She was fired.Okay, but if you’re fired, isn’t it MORE difficult to step away? I mean, you didn’t want to leave…[I actually hadn’t heard she was fired, or why she would have been. Too bad if she was – she’s a really good actress.]

      • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I mean the article literally says due to family matters but sure let’s all assume the POC woman got fired.

        • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Did you also immediately assume Zack Snyder got fired from Justice League when he stepped away due to family members? No because he’s a white man? So shut up then.

          • rafterman00-av says:

Why did you even bring up her race? I read it in a few rags, like The Sun. The LA Times reports her camp is denying it. But we all know what it often is when someone famous uses the “time with the family” card.

          • cura-te-ipsum-av says:

A lot of people did in fact speculate Zack Snyder was either fired or about to be fired from Justice League at the time. Whether or not that actually happened, if he wasn’t, how come he wasn’t asked back is something that also has been wondered about.

          “POC woman”Black. She’s Black.

        • rafterman00-av says:

I read that in a couple of rags. For whatever it’s worth.

        • recognitions69-av says:

The way you weaponized ‘POC’ as some sort of ‘fuck you’ to that person was pretty gross.  Do better.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

Are we sure she didn’t just leave to do the gritty Family Matters reboot?

    • danielnegin-av says:

Haven’t Thandiwe and the studio both denied this?

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I mean… the article says it’s due to family matters which is absolutely believable, also Thandiwe Newton is fantastic in everything I’ve seen her in. So I think you might be wrong?

      • antsnmyeyes-av says:

Other articles have said she and Channing Tatum had a huge argument last week on set about the Will Smith slap and he stormed off.

        • captainbubb-av says:

Ugh, I was hoping this was an absurd joke and then I Googled…

        • bigal6ft6-av says:

yah it’s interesting the tabloids seem to say it was a fight about the Will Smith slap which seems like a weird reason to leave/get ejected from a movie as neither party seems to have a connection to the slapper and slapee

      • jamsievg-av says:

There are reports that Thandie and Channing got into a huge row on the set; he decided he didn’t want to work with her, and since he’s #1 on the call sheet as well as a producer, he got his way. She got let go.

“Magic Mike’s Last Dance is set to be an HBO Max original, which seems like a weird choice after Magic Mike XXL immediately became known as a delightful theatergoing experience, but hey, whatever gets this movie into the people’s eyeballs!”Well, I’m just not sure about anything in that sentence.

  • gloopers-av says:

there’s a gawker article saying her and channing were fighting over the slap

  • ohnoray-av says:

Newton has seemed a bit strange in some of her interviews before all this happened, always had some good sharp takes on things, and has been weirdly “eat pray love” lately lol. Sure girl just needs some time to process shit.

  • heathmaiden-av says:

“plot details” – as if that matters. This movie doesn’t need a plot any more than porn or a 1970s martial arts movie. Just string together excuses for the dance sequences, and I’m good.
