Love it or hate it—reactions tend to be polarized—Saltburn is one of the year’s most talked-about films. A few eyebrow-raising scenes have solidified its place in the zeitgeist, but Emerald Fennell’s latest has another thing going for it: a show-stopping finale set to “Murder On The Dance Floor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. And if there’s one thing Saltburn fans and detractors can agree on, it’s that “Murder On The Dancefloor” is an all-time banger.

A well-placed musical moment on-screen can completely change the fortunes of an old hit. The most famous recent example is the monumental re-popularization of “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush after it was featured in the fourth season of Stranger Things. (Other examples: “Come And Get Your Love” in Guardians Of The Galaxy or “Bohemian Rhapsody” in Wayne’s World.) “Murder On The Dancefloor” is the latest track to benefit from becoming a film star. Originally peaking at #2 on the U.K. charts back in 2001, the disco-pop tune is now expected to re-enter the Top Ten for the first time in more than 20 years, according to Official Charts.

That’s just one aspect of the song’s resurgence. Per People, “Murder On The Dancefloor” has seen a 250% increase in Spotify streams globally since Saltburn hit Prime Video on December 22. The song had its biggest day ever on New Years Eve with 1.5 million streams, causing it to enter the service’s global songs chart for the first time at #130. On top of that, the song is currently rising on the TikTok music charts, in part due to a viral trend recreating Barry Keoghan’s dance at the end of Saltburn.

“It actually feels really magical. And if I’m honest, I don’t think I’ve completely processed it really,” Ellis-Bextor told the BBC about the song’s newfound popularity. All music “goes off and has its own journey,” the singer noted, but the fact that “new people who weren’t even alive the first time it came out” have found it is “just spectacular.”

She added, “It’s extraordinary. It’s a song I’ve been singing for over 20 years, I still love singing it. I love the way people react when I do it live. But for new people to be discovering it, for it to be making new memories with people is kind of beautiful.”

Nothing about Saltburn sounds appealing to me

  • ryanlohner-av says:

Long Long Time was another big one recently, though a bit more muted since it’s not exactly a song that gets you pumped up.

Sounds good…as long as no one repeats anything in the movie having to do with bathtubs, newly buried graves, or mostly anything in the movie, really.

    • liffie420-av says:

LOL I watched is Christmas weekend, it certainly is something, and not what I was expecting. And man that grave scene, when it first started I was thinking, is he gonna do what I think he is, then holy shit he did it I howled with laughter. That said I did actually like the movie, also side note does Barry Keoghan like ever play a non creepy person. I swear everything I have seen him in he is playing some weirdo.

      • ryanlohner-av says:

In Chernobyl he’s a naive young kid forced into euthanizing the irradiated pets.

        • liffie420-av says:

“playing some weirdo”lol still holds true. Saw him in Britannia, plays some odd ball rummaging through the remains of a battle field.

      • bcfred2-av says:

He has a supporting role in Dunkirk as a mate on Mark Rylance’s boat (my intro to him) where he comes off just as awkward, not fully creepy.  So…one?

      • joeinthebox66-av says:

Haha yeah! NYE weekend for me, and I avoided seeing any trailers. Just went of really enjoying Promising Young Woman. Man I did not expect that. It reminded me a lot of The Talented Mr. Ripley…just very bodily fluid heavy.
Barry Keoghan is just completely in his creepy Walken and Dafoe phase of his career. I thought he shined comedically in The Eternals, but the fact most ppl think he’s the villain for half the movie, is just a testament to how creepy and serious he comes off.

        • liffie420-av says:

You might be right. I went into it blind as well, I think I may have seen something here about it, maybe. So I had no idea what it was about, which makes it better IMO. I was like ok rich kid poor kid love story thing, sure why not, then that shit took a turn. It even had a Usual Suspects thing to it at the end.

        • srgntpep-av says:

That is exactly the movie it reminded me of as well.  I didn’t know much about it, but I always have a difficult time watching movies with zero likeable characters.  I mean, sure, he wins (?) but it didn’t exactly make me feel good for him or anyone else involved.

      • daddddd-av says:

he’s not creepy in Banshees of Inisherin, his character is actually rather sweet. he is an oddball doofus in it though lol

        • surprise-surprise-av says:

Yeah. There’s another film he did very early in his career called Mammal where he plays a homeless young man who falls into the life of a woman who has just lost her estranged teenage son. The plot is kind of creepy because their relationship goes from a mother/son type relationship to a romantic one but Keoghan’s character isn’t particularly creepy. He’s seems to have cornered the market on playing sociopaths and puppy dogs.

I saw it in theaters and all the wild scenes hit even harder on the big screen. I wouldn’t say it was exactly an interactive screening, but the audience reactions throughout the whole film definitely added to the entertainment and general “WTF is happening!?” vibe.

        • liffie420-av says:

Yeah I mean it starts pretty normal, sure everything’s fine.  Then he starts getting creepy and possessive, then oof.  But man I laughed so HARD at the grave scene.

      • roger-dale-av says:

I started a watch over the holiday as well. I had to pause it for other things, and I’m almost afraid to pick it back up.

        • liffie420-av says:

It’s worth a watch for sure.  It’s just not what I thought it was, well it’s not what the first act makes it seem like.

      • indicatedpanic-av says:

He’s actually fairly normal in the MCU’s Eternals. Actually, arguably, he’s the lone bright spot of that movie and that cast.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

fucking the grave was all part of his devious, 20 year plan.

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

it’s so funny how nebulous and manipulatable the charts are now that it’s not tied to physical sales in any way.also saltburn fucking sucked.

  • murrychang-av says:

Interesting song…generic disco beat with a half country line dancing video.  Well produced song though.
Not as good as Kate Bush.

  • drew8mr-av says:

All I gotta say is that Sophie seems way too nice to burn this goddamn house right down.

  • pkellen2313-av says:

Such a weird movie. It’s actually super straightforward (like a middle school production of The Talented Mr. Ripley). I saw every “twist” coming a mile away. But then, they throw in three or four bonkers scenes to try to convince you you’re watching something transgressive. Watch Titane and tell me again how bonkers this movie is.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

presenting ‘the twist’ as a twist baffled me. that was already the movie i was watching!

      • indicatedpanic-av says:

Yeah, that was the one creative decision I wish they hadn’t made. I would have liked the more nebulous “were all of these things accidents that he just took advantage of…or not” ending. Once they explained everything, it was kind of like, “yeah, i know”

    • andysynn-av says:

I definitely will watch Titane again. Not so much this one…

  • gurren-chaser-av says:

strange how time perception works but any song that came out after the year 2000 isn’t an “old” song

  • realtimothydalton-av says:

everything about saltburn is designed to drive social media posts, streaming numbers, tiktok edits, etc. its a post-cinema movie. really bad sign for the future unfortunately!

    • thepetemurray-darlingbasinauthorithy-av says:

It’s almost as if it were written and directed by a rich white woman.

    • ohnoray-av says:

this is the way audiences like to engage now, at least it’s drawing folks to cinema and the movie entertained for the most part. Look at any random year in cinema and most of the movies are absolute shit or boring.I don’t think Saltburn is in anyway trying to be transgressive, I think it’s callback to young horny films for a new generation (who live off of clips from the 90s and aughts, and were obviously craving their own version).

  • the-prisoner-av says:

If they’d never made The Talented Mr. Ripley, it would have been more shocking.

  • uncleump-av says:

I actually liked Saltburn. It is wildly uneven but I don’t mind that it’s derivative (it’s to The Talented Mr. Ripley what Cruel Intentions is to Dangerous Liaisons) and I really enjoyed the wild swings into satire. Every once in a while, a movie will be wildly overpraised and overhated at the same time and I think Saltburn is exactly that movie for this time.

    • ohnoray-av says:

I agree, it’s a fun and silly and pervy movie. The movie finds a way to remind us that shock value still has value, and can be done in a way that entertains us. The criticisms feel shallow since the movie isn’t trying to go deep.Last third slumps but still enjoyed the graveyard humps.

Stop trying to make fetch happen, it’s not gonna happen.

  • seven-deuce-av says:

The difference between this track and “Running Up that Hill”? It’s kind of total shit.

  • dsgagfdaedsg-av says:

(Other examples: “Come And Get Your Love” in Guardians Of The Galaxy or “Bohemian Rhapsody” in Wayne’s World.) Keep it going, this is interesting. I was thinking “Mad World” from Donnie Darko, but that was a cover, and ditto “I Will Always Love You.” Maybe “Lust for Life” from Trainspotting?
