As a kid who read the books “A Time to Kill” and “The Client,” I was always confused how dead-on The Client was and how many diversions and omissions A Time to Kill had. Carl Lee Hailey is a much bigger character in the book with a whole plan and endgame, and his motivations are a lot more directly spelled out. By leaning instead into how Matthew McConaughey’s character sees him and struggles against racism, Carl Lee Hailey actually becomes less of a character in the film.

He wouldn’t have. There was no beating Cuba Gooding Jr. that year, and if someone was gonna do it, it was gonna be Edward Norton in Primal Fear.
