Someone let Saoirse Ronan make her own Curb Your Enthusiasm right now

The Lady Bird star would like to make a proper comedy, though she doesn't think she quite has the skills yet

Saoirse Ronan wasn’t able to make it into Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, but she hasn’t completely written off the possibility of appearing in a comedy someday… hopefully once she’s acquired the “skill and musicality” for the genre, which she’s not sure she has yet. That came up in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, during which Ronan said that the next thing she wants to try is acting in a comedy because it’s her favorite genre to watch.

“I would love to do something modern and funny,” she said, and while she doesn’t think she’s “necessarily” has the required skills yet, she says she’s “more comfortable and confident to try.” As for the kind of comedy she likes, Ronan apparently specifically named Bridesmaids, Seinfeld, and Curb Your Enthusiasm—which sets up some exciting possibilities. Bridesmaids was a good movie, and Ronan doing some kind of Bridesmaids-esque comedy movie definitely seems like something she could do and will do eventually, but maaaan the idea of her doing some kind of Curb thing where she plays herself and has wacky Hollywood/Ireland adventures sounds incredible.

Greta Gerwig could show up as a comedically exaggerated version of herself, Ronan could constantly explain to people how her name is pronounced, she could get into absurd misunderstandings that make her look bad even though she didn’t really mean to do anything bad, Susie Essman can call her a “bald, four-eyed fuck” or whatever. You can’t deny that it would be very funny to see Ronan doing that exasperated Larry David thing where he just holds his hands up, mid-shrug, because he just can’t fathom why someone is mad at him. Someone make this show! Let Saoirse Ronan do whatever she wants!

I’d watch a video of her reading a telephone book.

Saoirse as Jerry, Greta Gerwig as George, Jane Lynch as Kramer, Timothee Chalomet as Elaine. Seinfeld reboot, sorted.

      I might watch this.

Hilarity ensues as Greta goes to NBC to pitch a show about Barbie.

      • fireupabove-av says:

Greta: “Ah, you see, Ken had gotten into an accident with Barbie’s Dream Car, and because Ken didn’t have insurance, the judge decreed that he become Barbie’s butler.”Japanese TV Executive: “Is this customary in Mattel’s legal system?”Saoirse: “No, that’s what makes it such a humorous situation.”TV Exec (to assistant in Japanese): “Are you following any of this?”Assistant (in Japanese): “I’m still trying to figure out why they gave us a bag of tiny plastic shoes.”

Sorry, I ain’t scabbin’ for Saoirse Ronan or nobody. Don’t you know there’s strikes on?

    • lmh325-av says:

In the Harper’s Bazaar article, it was stated that she is supporting the strike and is not discussing any of her past or present work in any specific detail. It was also for Harper’s Bazaar UK (where the unions aren’t on strike). The full article talked only about her stage work, work she’s doing for the BBC (which doesn’t fall under the strike), her interest in hypothetically doing more comedy, her interest in hypothetically directing, and her fashion sense. It also was not promoting any of her work and was solely a fashion spread.

Wow what a relief because I was being extremely serious and not just jokin’ around at the article author’s expense at all.  I was so mad until this very moment and you have talked me off the anger ledge.

Oh boy, you’re really funny, you know?

I love that you can blame someone else for your shitty joke falling entirely flat.

The response to your joke getting many more likes than your joke did should’ve clued you in, but nope. You decided that it was the audience that was wrong, not your stupid, shitty sense of humour.

Maybe leave the comedy writing to the professionals.

Not exactly the same thing, but I remember her being pretty good on SNL.

    1) Bridesmaids is not a good movie. It is a funny movie with engaging performances but a bad story. Please stop spreading the myth that it is good. It is, at best, mediocre.2) Nobody anywhere should ever make Curb Your Enthusiasm. Not even the people who make Curb should make Curb. But as that ship has sailed, let’s not encourage MORE of that ship. Besides, we’ve already had the Saoirse Ronan Curb and it was called Doll & Em.

    • laurenceq-av says:

Bridesmaids is definitely not good.  Good performances, as you say, and some funny bits contrasting with some seriously awful, cringey stuff.

    • buttsoupbarnes-av says:

Most people judge comedies based on “are there 2 or 3 really funny moments I can reference in conversation to seem funny”… not based on whether they’re actually good movie. Bridesmaids passes this test, which is why people like it. Same with Step Brothers which an absurd number of people try to tell me is a great movie.

      • necgray-av says:

Oh for sure! I just don’t want Barsanti thinking he can say it’s good without some pushback.

      • pr0jectmirage-av says:

What are your thoughts on Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and do you agree like Christopher Nolan, that is is one of the great comedies (which I do agree)?

    • bigbydub-av says:

“It is a funny movie with engaging performances”You mean the things people look for in a comedy?

  • memo2self-av says:

I thought she was really funny in See How They Run (“He was hit over the head with a ski, and it was all downhill from there”).

  • rexcraigo-av says:

She should be able to do anything she wants to. She’s the best actress there is and is smoking hot. I’d bang her silly if she asked me nicely.

  • minsk-if-you-wanna-go-all-the-way-back-av says:

Make it now even though she doesn’t think she has the skills yet?

  • milligna000-av says:

“but maaaan the idea of her doing some kind of Curb thing where she plays herself and has wacky Hollywood/Ireland adventures sounds incredible.”Sounds lazy and uninspired. Leave comedy to the folks who spend their whole lives making comedy. Dabbling in comedy tends to be as bad as actors who release albums. There are a handful of exceptions, but it’s damn rare

One of my favourite stories was Wes Studi on the set of Mystery Men who was floored by how dedicated the comedic actors were. He thought they’d be all screwing around and joking, but instead guys like Hank Azaria and Eddie Izzard and Ben Stiller standing around during breaks debating and discussing about what if they emphasised this word instead of that one, what if they put a beat in here…As deadly serious, if not more so, than any serious dramatic actors he’d worked with.

  • breadnmaters-av says:

Bridesmaids is a good movie, very good. I don’t care for the song at the conclusion. It’s uncomforatbly cute and the subplot with the Irish cop makes no sense. Otherwise, fun with plenty of ‘relatable’ moments.

“The Lady Bird star would like to make a proper comedy, though she doesn’t think she quite has the skills yet”So, why are we in such a hurry to give her an improvised show of her own if she doesn’t think she’s ready for it?

  • kinosthesis-av says:

Weird, because she’s already been in several comedies and has been very funny in them.

  • panthercougar-av says:

I’m unfamiliar with her and her work, but maybe just cast her on the actual Curb?
