Normally, The A.V. Club uses this space to preview all the major films coming to a theater near you. But with the world in the grips of a pandemic, nothing’s coming to a theater near you; theaters have closed their doors, and studios have pushed back their releases. So for the time being, we’ll instead be previewing movies going straight to VOD and streaming services. We’ll also note the films that definitely won’t be, as they’ve been officially postponed. These days, we’re all watching movies at home. Consider this now a source of the new releases coming to a living room near you.

I can’t figure out if Scoob is partly going to VOD because Warner Brothers was edgy about the possibility of it being a box office failure. I really hope it’s fun, because the trailer is kind of funny and cute. Plus it promises the cinematic return of Dick Dastardly! (And voiced by Jason Isaacs of all wonderful actors)

I’m looking forward to Blue Falcon, Dynomutt, and Dick Dastardly, but I’m hoping they don’t overstuff the film, hoping to spin half a dozen characters off into a “Hanna-Barbera shared film universe” or something. Some of the ways they’ve rebooted their characters recently actually work— the DC comic about Snagglepuss being a closeted gay playwright in the 1950’s won a GLAAD award, for chrissakes, and others don’t (the FNAF knockoff Banana Splits movie). I think they just need to admit some characters haven’t aged well, and let the rights expire on those characters, instead of holding onto them so tightly.Other than Scoob!, I’m curious about the bisexual Cyrano de Bergerac film, as well as the new Beanie Feldstein film (even if I’m sad that she’s no longer on WWDITS).

Yeah I wasn’t that excited about Scooby Doo but Blue Falcon? Now you’ve got my attention. (Wish it wasn’t Marky Mark tho)

Goodbye, AV Club. At times, it’s been a fun ride, but breaking this article into 33 discreet chunks is truly disappointing. I won’t be back.

What a weird thing to be the last straw

    • mr-smith1466-av says:

What did they do? On mobile it’s all one long article like normal. Is it all the ads?

      • squatchbkln-av says:

on desktop/laptop it’s one of those hated, abandoned-by-most-sites endless slideshow with one paragraph and one image per slide, guaranteed to have readers abandon it by slide number 3

      • otterwise-av says:

Yeah, on mobile we just have a bunch of unrelated affiliate links and autoplaying videos. So much better.

      • nilus-av says:

It doesn’t do it on mobile but on desktop it’s a slide show and it sucks

    • the-misanthrope-av says:

Pro-tip: If you shrink your browser window (it works on Chrome; I haven’t tested other browsers) to tablet-ish dimensions, it will scroll as one long article. If it doesn’t work in your chosen browser, you might need to use developer options or some kind of extension, I guess….not an expert (so maybe that “pro-tip” bit was a joke?)

    • bcfred-av says:

This is horrendous.  Most sites are going AWAY from slideshows because no one stays on a page long enough to make the ad buy worthwhile.

It is almost as if Spanfeller is shockingly bad at his job and doesn’t understand the industry he works in.

    • nogelego-av says:

C’mon, is scrolling really easier than clicking 33 times? It loads faster on a phone. Think of it as a workout for your clicky muscle..

      • swabbox-av says:

Yes. Scrolling one long list is easier than scrolling 33 short lists a small amount to be able to read the final sentence or two, and additionally having to work out your clicky muscle between each.

    • cjob3-av says:

Yeah, I had to click 33 times just to comment on Scoob. Now I don’t even remember what it was.

  • agentviccooper-av says:

This site becoming insufferably woker-than-thou didn’t totally drive me away, but this new style to maximize clicks is the straw that broke the camel’s back. Peace out after 23 years, AV Club.

What a baffling choice to make David Spade a comic leading man now. Just visually it does not work.

  • callmecarlosthedwarf-av says:

Fuck you, AV Club. Luckily, I know how to use Chrome to make this the mobile site.Anyway, I can’t wait to see the Blue Falcon and DynoMutt onscreen – here’s hoping they go with the Mystery Incorporated version of the character!

There’s no way I’m not watching Porno.  That looks insane.

  • chronoboy-av says:

This article makes it seem like half the movies in 2020 will be about gay relationships. Gay Oscars – Part 2?

  • capcomvssnk-av says:

STOP THESE SLIDESHOWS. clicking through every is such a task when scrolling is an option. slideshows are ugly.

I just learned that Rob Morgan is 70 years old when I thought he was maybe 48. Don’t crack indeed.

  • nilus-av says:

It’s had some limited theatrical run in film feats last year but the pandemic has pushed the release of Blood Machine to Shudder on May 21st. The trailer makes it look like it will be trippy awesomeness or super terrible but worth watching
