Earlier this month, the Grammys announced that Kendrick Lamar would be returning to its stage for what we assumed would be another intense and powerful performance like his showing in 2016. Then, once rumors emerged that Lamar’s performance would feature a couple of special guests—specifically U2 and comedian Dave Chappelle—it became clear that Lamar was planning something just as big, if not bigger, than last time.
Tonight, as promised, Lamar kicked off the Grammys telecast with another buzzworthy showcase, hitting the stage in front of an American flag backdrop with background dancers dressed as soldiers as he performed his song “XXX” with cameos from U2’s Bono and the Edge. Then, as the rumors promised, Dave Chappelle showed up to comment on the danger of speaking the truth as a Black man in America: “Hi, I’m Dave Chappelle,” he said. “And I just wanted to remind the audience that the only thing more frightening than watching a Black man be honest in America is being an honest Black man in America. Sorry for the interruption.”
Kendrick Lamar has already picked up four Grammys tonight, including Best Rap Song, Best Music Video, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap/Sung Performance. You can see his Grammys performance in full below, via Rolling Stone.
