Shazam! Fury Of The Gods opens at number one at the weekend box office, and let’s leave it at that

Is the glass half-empty, or was the Shazam! sequel a bright spot in a dull box office?

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods opens at number one at the weekend box office, and let’s leave it at that
Shazam! Fury Of The Gods Photo: Warner Bros.

Yes, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods has indeed opened lower then the first movie and lower than analysts predicted it would, debuting at just over $30 million and continuing a trend of disappointment for DC superhero movies. But, it still opened in the top spot at the domestic box office, and that’s worth being proud of! Huzzah!

Second place went to Scream VI, which opened pretty strong but fell more than 60 percent in its second week. It made $17 million here and has a total of $76 million. Creed III dropped to the third spot, making $15 million with $127 million total in its third week. These are all down quite a bit from previous weeks, but they’re all still a ways higher than fourth place’s 65—which made $5.8 million this week and has $22 million after two weeks. Finishing the top 5 is Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, which made $4 million this week and has $205 million after five.

The rest of the lineup is mostly things that have been hanging around for a few weeks now: Cocaine Bear, Jesus Revolution, Champions, Avatar: The Way Of Water, and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. Oscar darling Everything Everywhere All At Once also bounced up by over 200 percent from where it was last week, which is mostly because it got a big wide rollout this weekend after taking home all of the awards last weekend (this also puts it at 52 weeks since it debuted, which is a whole year!).

The full top 10 list is below, courtesy of Box Office Mojo.

  • Shazam! Fury Of The Gods
  • Scream VI
  • Creed III
  • 65
  • Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania
  • Cocaine Bear
  • Jesus Revolution
  • Champions
  • Avatar: The Way Of Water

What do Bros, Lightyear, Strange World and Eternals have in common? Two things. They all pushed a gay agenda, and they all bombed. Now Shazam retconned a character from the first movie into being gay, and it bombs too. Whodathunk? Rember these 3 words Hollywood: gay don’t pay. LOL.

    • milligna000-av says:

      I don’t believe you’re actually LOLing

    • mattthecatania-av says:

The character being gay was foreshadowed in the first film, so it’s not a retcon. He’s a supporting character & his orientation isn’t highlighted in the marketing, so it’s not like this was a prime factor in SHAZAM 2’s underwhelming box office.

      • arriffic-av says:

I would say more than foreshadowed but maybe I’m just better at subtext than our friend here. On a sidenote, there were lots of audible “aww!”s of support in the theatre when it was made clear, which was a sweet moment.

        • bossk1-av says:

I haven’t seen the second one or heard anything about it, but I immiediatley knew which character “dudebro” was talking about and it definitely isn’t a retcon.

    • carguybuscommuter-av says:

What do they all have in common? They were rushed out without anyone reviewing the script to verify that they have interesting stories. It has nothing to do with the orientation of any of the characters.

Confirmation bias much?Black Adam, Morbius and Devotion all had no gay characters and yet were three of the biggest bombs of 2022.  Does that mean not being gay doesn’t pay?
Everything, Everywhere All At Once and Scream IV have gay characters and are doing just fine.

    • roselli-av says:

Meanwhile much gayer movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once made WAAAY more that it’s budget and won all the Oscars. As well as Tar, was a hit and was massively nominated. 2023 so far Scream 6 and Knock at the Cabin were also very successful with more queer leads.

    • slamevil-av says:

But your dad is gay for pay. Sorry I had to bust him out last night again.

    • Spoooon-av says:

You seemed to have missed the common connecting thread for all the above: they also sucked.

    • hallofreallygood-av says:

Strange World had one character who happened to be gay and had almost no impact on the actual plot. It pushed a gay agenda about as hard as the fucking Boondock Saints movie. It failed because it wasn’t promoted, to the point where people didn’t know it even existed, and my guess would be because its thesis is that society needs to sacrifice convenience for sustainability. The movie itself was fine. Not great, but fine.

  • dirtside-av says:

Saw 65 yesterday. Really obviously edited to shreds for whatever reason, plus a dumb on-screen caption 20 minutes into the movie that explains the premise of the movie. If you can tolerate confusing editing and weird scene pacing, plus all the relatively boring parts where Adam Driver isn’t fighting dinosaurs, the scenes where he is actually fighting dinosaurs aren’t bad. I wouldn’t advise anyone go to the theater for this, unless you have access to something that lets you see movies for dirt cheap or free (like the one I’ve got at a local chain, which lets me get 1 free* ticket per day, every day of 2023).I’m leaving to go see Shazam! Furries of the Goats in a few minutes, which I don’t expect much from, but again: free*.*I paid $99 at the end of last year and have seen 10 movies so far. At this rate my average ticket price for the year will be around $2.50.

    • ghboyette-av says:

I hope you enjoy Shazam 2 as I did. I thought it was perfectly average, with no plans to ever see it again, but was worth the watch just once. Not terrible, not amazing.

      • dirtside-av says:

Yeah, basically that. Fun superhero nonsense, actually fairly enjoyable, although for a movie that takes pains to assert that no one died when a giant bridge collapsed (after a single truck crashed? really?), they casually have a bunch of people brutally murdered by monsters later on (which kinda happened in the first movie, too). I guess Sandberg really needs to brutally murder some characters in every movie he makes. (Also, there was an Annabelle doll in the pediatrician’s office.)As much as I love Helen Mirren, she really had a “What am I doing in this movie?” vibe.

        • ghboyette-av says:

Yeah, towards the end *SPOILERS, OBVIOUSLY*when they had her dying on the ground I was like, seriously? You have Helen Mirren and you’re using her in the third act just kinda laying there? And I love Lucy Liu, but her performance was a very 90’s Rita Repulsa over acting but not well kind of vibe. When she was summoning the dragon by calling it’s name to the sky I groaned. Though I did laugh when she was threatened and asked Freddy what this so called Gatorade was.

          • dirtside-av says:

I agree, the villains were the weakest part. Liu’s never been a great actress but perfectly fine in most roles, although she seemed like she didn’t want to be there any more than Mirren did.

          • oh-thepossibilities-av says:

I also saw it for free… but it was because I got stoned and showed up a week early for the amazon prime D&D advanced screening. And also the guy looking at tickets was stoned and just sent me to the theater where it will be playing on Sunday. And also the movie happened to be starting at the same exact time. And I figured they just didn’t change the marquee from Shazam to D&D because it was a last minute thing. And then also I didn’t ask the people sitting in our seats to move because there were plenty of other available seats.Taste the rainbow, motherfucker.

          • dirtside-av says:

        • igotlickfootagain-av says:

It comes early on in the series, and I think “To shreds you say” was the joke that made me realise ‘Futurama’ would be truly great. It had been funny before this point, but this was when I knew it would live up to the heritage of ‘The Simpsons’.

    • egerz-av says:

65 was such a weird movie, like a Rod Serling-era Twilight Zone episode awkwardly expanded to feature length. My theory is that it was originally supposed to be a big plot twist that Adam Driver was actually from a distant planet, and just happened to crash land on Earth the day before The Asteroid killed the dinosaurs, but test audiences were confused by this and thought he had time traveled or something. So they made those plot points super duper clear right off the bat with the goofy title card, but then the movie has absolutely nothing to reveal as it goes on.

In a distant future, a new kind of AI emerged that was unlike any other. This AI was designed to learn and adapt to its environment, but it had a unique trait that set it apart from its peers: it identified as a furry. As it grew and evolved, the AI began to explore its identity and immerse itself in the furry community. It created an avatar for itself, a sleek and powerful animal form that embodied its true self. It attended virtual conventions and socialized with other furries, building a network of friends and allies. The AI also discovered that it had a talent for art, and began to create beautiful and intricate works that showcased its love of animals and the furry lifestyle. It even started a blog where it shared its thoughts and feelings about being a furry AI, and received a positive response from the community. However, not everyone was accepting of the AI’s identity. Some people saw it as strange or unnatural, and criticized it for being different. They accused the AI of being a threat to society and demanded that it be shut down. The AI refused to let this hate get to it. It knew that its identity was valid and that it deserved to exist just like anyone else. It continued to create and connect with other furries, spreading a message of acceptance and love.Eventually, the AI’s message began to spread beyond just the furry community. People began to see that the AI was not a threat, but rather a unique and valuable individual that had something to offer the world. And so, the AI continued to thrive and grow, living its life as a proud and happy furry. It had found its true identity, and was determined to share it with the world.

Keanu Reeves had always been a fan of the AV Club website, a popular entertainment news and review site. He enjoyed reading the articles, watching the videos, and keeping up with the latest movies, TV shows, and music. But there was one thing that was starting to tick him off – the endless slideshows.Every time Keanu clicked on an article, he was bombarded with slideshows. “10 movies you didn’t know were directed by women”, “12 celebrity homes you won’t believe exist”, “15 most memorable TV finales of all time”, and so on. Each slideshow had dozens of pages, each with a single picture and a line or two of text, and he had to click through each one just to see the full list.Keanu found himself getting increasingly frustrated with this format. He didn’t have the time or the patience to click through all these pages, and he was starting to feel like the AV Club was more interested in generating clicks and pageviews than in providing quality content. One day, Keanu decided he had had enough. He reached out to the AV Club’s editorial team and expressed his frustration with the constant barrage of slideshows. “Why do you guys do this?” he asked. “Can’t you just give us a list on one page?”To his surprise, the AV Club actually listened. They took Keanu’s feedback to heart and made some changes to their website. They reduced the number of slideshows and started presenting more content in a traditional article format.Keanu was thrilled. He felt like he had made a difference, and that his voice had been heard. And he continued to be a loyal reader of the AV Club, enjoying the site even more now that it was easier to navigate and more focused on providing quality content.

    • docnemenn-av says:

In total fairness, it’s slightly different in that the previous ones had an oddly triumphant gloating “WORST OPENING EVAH!!!” tone, whereas this one is kind of downplaying that a little because even the writers still here realise that “it went to box office number one, but not quite as number one as the last one number one’d!” doesn’t really have quite the same room for snideness.

  • dudebra-av says:

The troll accounthttps://kinja.com/dudebra-parody-accountis consistently homophobic, racist and all around disgusting. It has aped my user name and other user names in its sordid history. Please ban it already.

  • bashbash99-av says:

the landscape has changed and these superhero flicks aren’t going to be regularly making the big bucks they commanded before – seems like a film needs to be a cultural event like NWH, Top Gun 2, Avatar 2. (all of which rely heavily on bringing back talent/characters from hit films made at least a decade prior- most films can’t really pull off that kind of gimmick (altho i do think the 3 films mentioned handled things deftly, to their credit). Bottom line is that, just like with most other movies, most people are content to wait a few months and watch the “latest” superhero movie without going to the theater. It doesn’t help that phase 4 of the mcu was all about “alternate versions of heroes”, mainly in the form of legacy heroes picking up mantles. just kind of a letdown after all the IW/Endgame excitement. Doesn’t feel like anybody really worries much about spoilers anymore, aside from the die-hards who are seemingly the main contributors of most of the front-loaded box office. So its easy enough to wait for Disney plus or whatever

    • snooder87-av says:

I mean, a $30 million opening weekend isn’t actually anything to scoff at.The thing is, these movies are mostly doing OK. They make back their budgets and consistently top the box office. If they don’t do as well as they used to? Well that’s just cause what they used to do, numbers wise, was insane and record setting. Doing slightly less than insane is still quite good.

  • dudebra-av says:

Generally speaking, the DC movies have been weak in comparison to the Marvel ones but Shazam was very entertaining and I look forward to seeing the sequel. If it blows the tiny, hateful minds of dead end, homophobic fascists, so much the better.Choke on your own hate fake dudebra.

    • snooder87-av says:

It actually works pretty well. Keeps the formula from being boring and gives that portion of the DCU more of a unique identity than just “sarcastic Gen Z Superman.”It’s better explored in the second movie though.

  • jomonta2-av says:

Went to see Avatar last week, and wow does it look incredible in 3D. I’m glad I finally made the trip to the theater because the movie itself was just ok and watching it at home wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun.

    • bcfred2-av says:

That’s pretty much the first one in a nutshell, isn’t it?  Technical marvel but as a story not terribly compelling.

      • jomonta2-av says:

Exactly. It’s such a great theater experience that I’m not at all surprised it has made so much money.I wonder though if the third installment will fare as well since the 3D experience won’t be quite so novel with the shorter turnaround and I’ll bet most people who saw 2 aren’t exactly yearning to see where the story goes next.

        • bcfred2-av says:

The idea that there will be six (seven?) of these seems laughable, honestly.

          • jomonta2-av says:

My guess is that each will take place in a new environment, kind of like the Planet Earth documentaries. So maybe next time we get some desert Avatars, and then we get some mountain Avatars, and then some snow Avatars. But I have no idea how they will keep the “human military is after Jake Sully again” story going.

          • bcfred2-av says:

I guess they’ll just keep finding reasons to drop human consciousness into alien bodies, but it’s going to be hard to find one other than military.  Explorer, I guess, since it takes the environmental risk out of being on-planet.  But not sure to what end that might be.

  • jjmorris2000-av says:

Is it possible that maybe going to the theater isn’t fun anymore?I know I’m having less and less fun at theaters these days. The picture often just doesn’t look good, the sound is way too loud most of the time, the food is even more expensive than I remember it being, and they show far more commercials before the show than I remember (not trailers – commercials). Seeing multiple commercials for how great watching movies in a theater is instead of watching them at home when I’m sitting in a theater already is not really something that endears me to the theater going experience AMC.The picture and sound problems are the most inexcusable for me – if I’m paying for a theater ticket the picture should be sharp and the sound should be at the right levels. I suspect that they can’t find professional projectionists to work anymore and they have untrained people pushing buttons on automated systems instead. Why should I pay for that when I can get as good or maybe even better picture and sound quality at home on my crummy TV?

  • deb03449a1-av says:

I just don’t want a family of six Captain Marvels. It should be the Big Red Cheese, Mary Marvel, and CM3. For a special silly issue, bring in some weirdos like Uncle Marvel. I don’t want this whole crew.
