Kim’s Convenience is ending but Simu Liu’s movie career is just beginning—and in a very big way. To celebrate his birthday, Marvel Studios dropped the teaser trailer for Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, featuring Liu as the titular hero, marking the first Asian superhero to get a standalone MCU film.

The trailer shows Shang-Chi working as a valet attendant, doing karaoke with his friend Katy (played by Awkwafina), and having drinks with Katy and his other friend, Jon Jon (a nearly unrecognizable Ronny Chieng with a red dye job). But no matter how much of a normal life he seems to have, he can’t outrun who he is. Once Shang Chi becomes a hero, his friends are super confused. “Who are you?” asks Katy, after he double-kicks bad guys on the bus. But she seems to embrace it quickly and takes control behind the wheel to help Shang-Chi save people. They barely come out unscathed but she thinks they “make a good team.”

Entertainment Weekly revealed a first look at the movie and interviews with Liu, Awkwafina, director Destin Cretton, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, and producer Jonathan Schwartz. The feature also divulges some plot details: “Simu Liu stars as the young hero, who spent the first part of his life training to become an assassin under his father’s strict tutelage. He’s since walked away and tried to build a somewhat normal life in America, only to find himself sucked back into his father’s sinister domain.”

“The core of Shang-Chi’s arc in the comics is really a family drama,” Schwartz tells EW. “That was something that Destin keyed into really early on in our conversations, the idea of taking this broken family and this really dark, even abusive family background and seeing what that does to a child over time.”

EW explains that at the beginning of the movie, Shang-Chi is living in San Francisco and going about his day like any other twenty-something. “He’s a bit directionless, and he spends most of his time hanging out with friends, like Awkwafina’s Katy. She’s one of his closest confidants, but she doesn’t know much about his history or why he’s no longer in touch with his parents. And she’s definitely unfamiliar with the action-packed world of assassins and kung fu masters.”

“She doesn’t do a lot of the heavy lifting,” said Awkwafina. “But at the end of the day, she has a real heart, and she has a loyalty and dedication to her friendship with Shang-Chi. She’s super brave.”

The MCU doesn’t make misses when it comes to casting (for the most part) and having three actors with comedic backgrounds and dramatic chops bring Shang-Chi’s story to life makes it all very exciting— especially after watching the teaser. Now we just have to wait until September 3 to finally watch Liu make his MCU debut.

I’d just like to inform everyone that the dude with the sword-hands in the teaser is in fact a Shang-Chi villain that goes by the name of “Razor-Fist”.And it’s not just one guy whose used this name. There have been three Razor-Fists in the comics, the latter two of them were brothers. Also they probably won’t inlude the time Shang Chi teamed up with an alien cyborg to defeat a Mummified Ancient Egyptian Princess who was actually a shapeshifting alien with magic powers.

Marvel must gutted that they used up so many good concepts shilling for Hasbro with Rom and GI Joe. At least they retained the rights to Circuit Breaker from Transformers.

      • laserface1242-av says:

They still own everything tied to ROM that they created, just not the character himself. Hence why you have Black Bolt marrying a Dire Wraith Queen when he was going through his polygamy phase during War of Kings. And a couple Spaceknights cameoed in a tie-in to InfinityPlus Kid Cable is currently wielding a Spaceknight sword called the Light of Galador.

This why I like your posts. You give me information about Marvel comics I don’t know.Don’t let AVC articles about the distinguished competition side track you.edit: also WTF? Black Bolt did what!!!

          • laserface1242-av says:

Yeah it was part of this prophecy involving The Universal Inhumans. Basically the Kree experimented on four other species to create Inhumans, including the Dire Wraiths. The Kree also imparted them with the genetic memory to unite by having the five brides from each species under an Inhuman king. That being Black Bolt. Though, the other four brides were all killed off in Death of the Inhumans.

Cable is a kid now? And is dating all of the Stepford Cuckoos?

          • laserface1242-av says:

Yeah, during Extermination, Cable was told to bring the Temporally Displaced original X-Men team back to their original time but refused to do so. So a younger version of Cable showed up and killed him to make sure that the timeline was corrected. And, as far as I can tell, he and the Stepford Cuckoos are dating.

For a second I thought the guy playing Razorface was Wes Chatham a.k.a. Amos from The Expanse, but no, it’s just a guy who looks very slightly like the bearded version of him if he were taller. Probably for the best, because Amos fans would be sad about any part of Chatham’s body being removed even fictionally.

Yeah duh they’re saving that for the sequel! Bro do you even Marvel??

Honestly, hell yeah. It looks like a blast. How long has it been since we’ve had a a big budget/mainstream kung-fu movie? Too long!

        • StoneGoldx-av says:

I dunno, I kind of think trying to take the inherent racism out of Iron Fist is like doing it to Tarzan. I’m not sure how much is really left of the characters if you do so. Is that an argument for not using them? I dunno, maybe?

      • zerowonder-av says:

Iron Fist should definitely have a cameo, even if it’s just to have something randomly fall on him in the stinger or something.

    • willoughbystain-av says:

If we’re sticking to American/English language films there was Mulan last year, but if that doesn’t count I think we’d be talking about the inaccurately named Karate Kid remake in 2010, and if that doesn’t count I think Forbidden Kingdom in 2008? I could be forgetting something, only other thing I can think of is The Man With the Iron Fists in 2012, which I don’t think counts as big budget or mainstream, and Man of Tai Chi in 2013 which barely made it to US theatres. All of these, of course, had a fraction of the budget this has.

I love that there’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it homage to wuxia/Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (with the wire-fu and gorgeous forest) at around 1:15 (timed with the lyric, “you woke up the tiger”, which I can only hope was intentional).

      • Velops-av says:

The first scene is a clear reference to House of Flying Daggers. The bamboo forest and lime green uniform are iconic to that movie.

  • djburnoutb-av says:

I really like Awkwafina, she stole the show in Jumanji, but what a stupid fucking name. I’m sure it started out as a joke to get attention for her early rap career, and now she’s famous and stuck with it. Just go back to your original name ffs. What’s wrong with Nora Lum?

    • Fleur-de-lit-av says:

There’s not a thing wrong with her legal name.  Like you said, I think she’s just stuck with it.  When thousands of people know you as one thing, it’s a lot of work to change that.

    • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

I can see her trying to do that with “Nora from Queens,” but it’s going to be very funny when she wins like, an Emmy or Oscar as Awkwafina.

    • tobias-lehigh-nagy-av says:

They should change the name of the Aquafina brand to Noraluma just to spite her.

    • e-r-bishop-av says:

This comes up in pretty much every interview with her, and she’s consistently said 1. yes it’s goofy, because I came up with it when I was 15, but that’s still kind of my self-image so I still like it, 2. also I like that musicians get to use ridiculous names, 3. if I start getting a lot of serious roles I might stop using it for those.

    • chronoboy-av says:

I got used to it after a while, but if you didn’t know her background as a YouTube comedy rapper it would seem even dumber. Her given name is perfectly fine, and Lum is kind of a funny word tbh.

  • wrightstuff76-av says:

This looks good, though even as a hardcare Marvel stan I was wondering if we could get through the whole trailer without a joke. Not that that’s a bad thing necessarily.

  • chuckrich81-av says:

I don’t think I’ve ever gone from uninterested to hype so quickly before. This looks really fantastic.

    • kirivinokurjr-av says:

I was first thinking, “Great. Another Marvel movie.” But I was pretty quickly won over like you. A lot of it really has to do with seeing Asian faces onscreen. I’m Asian American and I’ll support this movie like I did Crazy Rich Asians (which I thought was really nothing special), but this one I think really hit me differently for some reason. Seeing Asian faces in movies set in San Francisco is a rarity, but this one at least at first glance looks like SF.  (It’s nice there are Asians on the 1 California, which goes through Chinatown). My high school was about 50% Asian, mostly Chinese, and it’s always been annoying to me to see SF very rarely reflected that way in film, so seeing this trailer really makes me smile even at this lowest of possible bars.

      • roboj-av says:

Seeing Asian faces in movies set in San Francisco is a rarity,
Imdb says that some scenes were. It definately looks like the Stockton Street tunnel in the background.
It’s interesting you mention that but I never really thought about it until now that for a city and a region that’s about half Asian now as far as demographics, there really hasn’t been too many recent mainstream films that show SF and the Bay Area as that or at least have Asian leads as the characters.

        • e-r-bishop-av says:

Oh that is absolutely supposed to be SF— never mind the tunnel, Awkwafina is driving a bus on the “1 California” route, and there’s a prominent shot of the Ghirardelli building (or a Ghirardelli building at least, not sure that’s the real one). Parts of the financial district were shut down for film shoots a while back and I’m guessing it was for this.

          • chronoboy-av says:

I wonder how many takes they needed until people stopped getting distracted by the amazing aroma of Ghiradehli building. It makes a great North Star when you lose your bearings.

        • dontdowhatdonnydontdoes-av says:

does Ali Wong’s Always Be My Maybe count? That’s the last movie I can think of that shows Asians in SF as main characters. (even their A-list cameo ).

      • lordoftheducks-av says:

At least the new Kung Fu series set in San Fran is mostly Asian. It is on the CW so set expectations accordingly.

      • chronoboy-av says:

FYI,  Ip Man 4 takes place in China Town and there’s a recent Randal Park romcom called “Always Be My Maybe”.

    • loveinthetimeofdysentery-av says:

DC has to be sick that Marvel is doing a much better version of the League of Assassins. This looks terrific

      • StoneGoldx-av says:

Please keep in mind, Fu Manchu’s Si-Fan predates Ra’s Al Ghul by like 60 years. Because the Mandarin was originally Fu Manchu in the comics.

        • loveinthetimeofdysentery-av says:

          A. If the Mandarin was originally Fu Manchu/Yellow Claw (yikes), that’s a fairly recent retcon, as Jimmy Woo took over Atlas at Manchu’s request in the comics. The Mandarin’s son Temugin was his second in command, but IIRC Mandarin and Manchu aren’t the same personB. Even disregarding that though, characters like Razor Fist didn’t show up (again, IIRC) until after al Ghul was introduced. Sure, Manchu had an organization, but I don’t think they had clearly defined personalities

          • StoneGoldx-av says:

You’re thinking of the Yellow Claw, who was Marvel’s Fu Manchu ripoff in the 50s. But they are two different characters. A few years back, Marvel changed Fu Manchu’s name to Zheng Zu so they could use him without violating trademarks.
I can see why you thought I was saying Mandarin was originally Fu Manchu — I just mean the position in this movie that Mandarin exists in, originally was occupied by Fu Manchu in the Master of Kung Fu comics. And Ra’s and the League are pretty clear lampshades of Fu Manchu and the Si-Fan. Complete with rebellious daughter, assassin that falls in love with the hero…

  • Fleur-de-lit-av says:

    That looks dope.  I’m in.

  • mark-t-man-av says:

So, I guess with this we might be looking at 4 MCU films in 2021.

  • tombirkenstock-av says:

This is the first thing I’ve seen from Marvel post-phase three that actually makes me interested in watching it. (Sorry Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Snowman, and Black Widow). Also, it looks like the first time a Marvel movie might have exciting action set pieces.

    • ohnoray-av says:

Wandavision was great, but I am excited to meet a character again where I don’t have to remember toooo much backstory.

    • labbla-av says:

Yeah, this looks pretty great. Wandavision started out okay but then gradually became more by the numbers with a terrible non-ending. I’m still mad about it.

    • yesidrivea240-av says:

Falcon feels like a Marvel film and not a TV show if that helps.

      • tombirkenstock-av says:

Honestly, the TV shows look fine, but I don’t have ten hours to waste to see if they’re good. And I was worried that this was going to end up being a show. I was so relieved that it turned out to be a movie.

        • yesidrivea240-av says:

I don’t have ten hours to waste to see if they’re goodSure, I guess, but you can always spread out your viewing experience over a few weeks. If you spend more than an hour a day watching TV or Youtube, then you have time to watch an episode that clocks in under an hour.

        • dirtside-av says:

I don’t have ten hours to wasteThe fact that you’re posting on the A.V. Club says otherwise 😉

        • listen2themotto-av says:

You realize that you have to spend somehours on ANY show to see if they’re good right? That’s like…how TV works

          • tombirkenstock-av says:

Yeah, and that’s why movies are so much better than television. I could watch five movies in the amount of time it takes to watch one season of TV. It’s just math.

          • misstwosense2-av says:

That is just a batshit insane opinion.

          • fanburner-av says:

You could spend forty minutes watching an episode of a show at home instead of two to three hours trapped in a movie theater after having paid $15 for a seat. Math!

          • tombirkenstock-av says:

But that’s how they get you. You watch one episode but the story keeps going. Pretty soon you’re stuck watching a couple hours of plot stretched out to ten or thirteen hours. It’s an inefficient medium. The cost/benefits analysis is clear.

    • soylent-gr33n-av says:

LOL at Falcon and the Winter Snowman

  • psychopirate-av says:

This looks really interesting. Seems very different from what the MCU has done in the past, and in a good, Guardians way. I’m sure it’ll tie-in; obviously the Mandarin and the Ten Rings have been around since Iron Man, so seeing how things go will be fascinating.

    • skipskatte-av says:

Yeah, they used the Ten Rings twice in two separate Iron Man movies, and in both cases it was a red herring for the real bad guy, a white dude who had a personal resentment towards Tony Stark.
I’m kind of curious how it will adress the whole “Multicultural United Nations of Terrorism” from the first Iron Man movie. (They kinda resolved the whole “there’s a real Mandarin” thing with that one-shot where someone from the actual ten rings shows up to confront Ben Kingsley.)

      • ryan-buck-av says:

It’s been a while since I watched Iron Man 3. Was the terrorist cell from the first movie revealed to be Killian’s doing? I can’t remember if he orchestrated that or just took credit for it as part his Mandarin scheme.

        • skipskatte-av says:

No, there was an actual ten rings in the first movie (that was a super multi-cultural terrorist group who nevertheless still all looked vaguely middle-eastern), but Stane killed them all off when he took the Mark 1 suit. Killian apparently figured no one was using it, so he swiped the name and created a focus-grouped “Mandarin” amalgamation of terrorist tropes played by an actor played by Ben Kingsley. There’s also a Marvel one-shot where an actual member of the Ten Rings shows up and springs Ben Kingsley from prison so that the real Mandarin can torture and presumably kill him for stealing his name.
So, the question ends up being how does this version of the Ten Rings square with the first Iron Man movie version of the Ten Rings, since that one was essentially an Al Qaeda/ISIS stand-in while this one has the whole “ancient secret society of kung-fu ninja assassins” thing going.

  • tyenglishmn-av says:

Love how it looks like they’re really leaning into the kung fu movie influence. I think they’ve proven they can have big success regardless of how obscure the character is at this point (as much as I like Shang-Chi he was not on my bingo card for getting his own film)

  • dacostabr-av says:

Eh, doesn’t look very good, but at least the hand-to-hand action seems better than most of Marvel’s stuff. Low bar, I know, but I guess it’s something.

    • realgenericposter-av says:

The fight choreography in Winter Soldier was great, I thought.  Daredevil too, if that counts.

      • dacostabr-av says:

The fight choreography in Daredevil was indeed great, but no, I personally don’t think the Netflix stuff count as real MCU.The Winter Soldier I felt was the same as all the usual lots of coverage+quick cuts that the MCU, and blockbusters as a whole, tend to do.

  • cybersybil5-av says:

I was all in from the announcement that Simu Liu was the lead but as an Asian and a woman, seeing Awkafina as his BFF has me bouncing in my seat. I know Marvel’s gonna hit all the requisite beats and they’re gonna look awesome and the casting is glitter sprinkles on the buttercream on the fondant of that cinematic confection.

  • nilus-av says:

Given the Ten rings thing and the look of things, I am wondering if the MCU is going to merge Fu Man Chu and The Mandarin into one new, less racist, character. Gotta admit,  Shang-Chi is a pretty deep cut character in Marvel and not one of my favorites but that trailer looks fun.  MCU doing Kung-Fu could really be fun

    • v-kaiser-av says:

It looks like they are since they’re going with Mandarin being Shang-Chi’s father. Fu-Manchu is Shang-Chi’s father in the comics. It also looked like there were some weird mutant creatures in the trailer, and armies of mutant hybrids was one of Manchu’s things, not Mandarin’s. Honestly Manchu is such a redundant character, and even in the 70’s they knew the name was a bad idea and had characters in universe think Manchu was fictional (Fu-Manchu being a badguy from a series of pulp adventure novels in the 30s) so throwing a few of his interesting aspects on to Mandarin is a better way to go. It also looks like they’re using the more modern takes on Mandarin where he’s almost like an East Asian Kingpin, just with access to even crazier technology. Just about anything would be better than the generic “rule-the-world” villain he used to be.

      • wrightstuff76-av says:

I wonder if we’re getting a brief cameo by Ben Kingsley to close off the Mandarin stuff from Iron Man 3. We know the real one was pissed about what Trevor Slattery had done with his name, so in theory he should be in Mandarin’s clutches.

          • wrightstuff76-av says:

That’s what I’m referring to. We know Trevor is being held by the Mandarin, so it’d be kinda fun to see him again (IMO of course 😀).

        • ryan-buck-av says:

As far as I’m concerned, they HAVE to. Everyone I know, regardless of their opinion of the Trevor reveal, still loved Kingsley’s performance as Trevor. It would be crazy to not have him cameo as a prisoner or servant to the real Mandarin.

        • joey-joe-joe-junior-shabadoo-av says:

Kingsley’s Mandarin was kidnapped from prison by the 10 Rings in the 2014 Marvel One-Shot short “All Hail The King”. Entirely possible.

      • e-r-bishop-av says:

even in the 70’s they knew the name was a bad idea and had characters in
universe think Manchu was fictional (Fu-Manchu being a badguy from a
series of pulp adventure novels in the 30s)Not sure that had anything to do with “knowing the name was a bad idea”. I think it was just Marvel’s approach to using any famous pre-existing fictional character they’d decided to shoehorn into their universe, like Dracula: everyone’s heard of them, so you have to either pretend that’s not the case (which makes the whole idea of using a famous character less appealing) or say that people know about them but wrongly think they’re fictional. Fu Manchu was not considered super dated in 1973— Rohmer’s last book was only 14 years old and there had been movies about him all through the 60s. Marvel stopped using his name only because they lost the rights.

    • realgenericposter-av says:

Man, the Doug Moench/Paul Gulacy Shang-Chi stuff from the 70s is super good.

    • Velops-av says:

Deep cuts are key to keeping the MCU feeling fresh. It allows the directors to veer from the standard format used for popular heroes like the Avengers. With Shang-Chi, the movie can veer into wuxia territory to give it a distinct personality.

This trailer got Iron Fist trending on Twitter, which has me thinking Marvel should get Jessica Henwick back in the fold and do some version of Daughters of the Dragon, or just anything with Colleen Wing, really. She made IF almost worth watching.

  • waylon-mercy-av says:

Looks a little generic, to be honest. If we didn’t know this was connected to the MCU, what would make it stand out from the other half dozen martial arts stuff on the market right these days? I’m sure it will be fine. Marvel stuff always is. And this is just a first trailer, but I’m not one to consume 3 or 4 more of these to the point where things start getting spoiled, so you gotta hook me off the bat. So my first impressions? This next Phase is still a little meh to me.

    • taumpytearrs-av says:

“what would make it stand out from the other half dozen martial arts stuff on the market right these days?”Being a big budget tent-pole release from an American studio? Sure, none of that automatically means it will be good or worth watching, but the other martial arts stuff on the market is usually foreign, has a much smaller budget, and does NOT get released in most American theaters. And the majority of modern English-language martial arts movies have even smaller budgets and go straight to DVD/streaming (although on the plus side, like 30% of them star Scott Adkins!). The only big American movies with a heavy martial arts component that I can remember in recent years are the John Wick series (the fight at the end of 3 with The Raid’s Yayan Ruhian and his buddy was great!).

  • refinedbean-av says:

So pumped for this. Give me Marvel polish + some insane (and I mean INSANE, let’s punch people through fuckin’ DIMENSIONS) martial arts action. Sign me up.

Only thing I’m concerned about is it looks like it’s doing another one of those “big battles” that are becoming a little too rote for Marvel. I’d much rather the climax of this movie (and it might be, who knows) be a nice 1v1 battle. In the rain. With two dudes staring at each other for an aggressively long time.

  • billyfever-av says:

This looks rad as hell. I’ve always loved Marvel’s batshit crazy kung fu stuff, which is why it’s so frustrating that their only previous attempt to bring it to live action sucked (looking at you, Iron Fist) and even a lot of their print stories aren’t very good (looking at you, 95% of the Iron Fist comics that have been published since the Brubaker/Fraction run). But this looks really visually interesting, unlike anything we’ve seen in the MCU before, and it looks like we might finally be in for some good fight choreography, which aside from The Winter Solider has been a consistent weak point in these movies.

The bus sequence could have been a surprise.I hope for lots of elaborate fight scenes but also plenty of character dialogue. Please, no racial slurs in this film.Beware of the internet racists, who will try and “review-bomb” this film before it comes out, just like they tried to do with Black Panther, Captain Marvel, the recent Star Wars films, etc.

The new version of Kung Fu wishes it was this good.

Wait wait stop. Hold the phone. Y’all done buried the lede. That’s Tony “Hard-motherfucking-Boiled” Leung as his dad?! In. Sold. Done. Opening night. Why are we even still talking about this?

Looks super fun. Classic kung fu/wuxia elements + MCU polish and budget should be a blast. Loving the cast as well, Marvel always knocks it out of the park there.Loving the multinational route the MCU is going in. As a South Asian, I’m super hyped for the Ms. Marvel show too.

So damn excited for this. With Kim’s sadly ending, I hope we see a lot more of Simu Liu in the MCU going forward.Though this isn’t a good teaser trailer IMO. Feels a bit too haphazardly thrown together. Not a lot of stunts, but the few that’s actually there looks good. Hopefully the actual first trailer will be better.

It’s sad how little Asia cares about Akwafina., but I guess it makes sense given her shtick is entirely-based on a western perspective. My Shanghainese wife still doesn’t understand why she “talks like black people”. That and I’ve read way too many threads/reviews saying she’s not pretty enough to appeal to a non-western Asian audience.

A nod to MCU’s casting, 120 discussion posts and yet still no acknowledgment of the INCREDIBLE NEWS THAT TONY LEUNG IS IN THE MCU!!!

I’m going to be very disappointed if the rings of The Mandarin are just vibranium bracelets not uniquely powered rings made from the engine of Fin Fang Foom’s spaceship.

TONY LEUNG!!!!!!!! It brings tears to my eyes to see him in an American blockbuster, not that he needed that exposure as an Asian superstar, but still. BRB time to watch Infernal Affairs for the 50th time. Or maybe 2046. Or In the Mood for Love. Or Happy Together. Or Hard Boiled. Or god forbid, Monster Hunter 2……….
