Marvel is giving us another sneak peek at the upcoming film Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings. In the last action-packed trailer, we got to see Shang-Chi learning all about his family history after years of outrunning his identity. “I thought that I could change my name… start a new life. But I could never escape his shadow,” Simu Liu said in the voiceover, referring to the strained relationship between his character and his character’s father, Wenwu/The Mandarin. The newest teaser provides an even further glimpse into Shang-Chi’s journey toward accepting his destiny and his struggle to live up to his father’s legacy.

The latest clip serves up just as many adrenaline-fueled fight scenes. Many of the scenes are just extended versions of the fights we’ve already seen in previous teasers—like that epic brawl on the San Francisco tram we saw in the very first teaser. We get some car and helicopter stunts, a mystical showdown in the woods, and of course, Awkwafina returns to provide some comedic commentary. “What happened to your shirt?” she asks a shirtless, Simu Liu who appears to be standing on top of a bar in the middle of a crowded club. He looks just as clueless as she does.

In addition to the Simu Liu/Awkwafina dream team, the cast of Shangi-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings also includes: Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, and Meng’er Zhang. The film was directed by Destin Cretton.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings makes its way into theaters on September 3. And, unlike the releases of Black Widow and Jungle Cruise, Disney+ won’t be offering the film for at-home streaming. No “cannibalization” here, folks. This time, you’ll have to head out to the theater and see Simu Liu on the big screen the old-fashioned way.

My local fleapit is unlikely to re-open this year, so this is gonna suck. At least with BW, I could pirate it within a day or two after release. But with this, it’s going to be a 2-3 month wait.

Not a good time to be forcing people back into public. I would pay the $30 for early access if I was bored that weekend, I’m not stepping foot into a theatre for this.

Unless Black Widow’s still in cinemas in a month, I’ll probably end up seeing this first. Hopefully the former isn’t a prerequisite to the latter.

With the Delta variant now making businesses get even stricter than before and the number of new cases still going up, I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney does an emergency “it’s on Disney+ Premier Access now too!”

      “what happened to your shirt?”
“i turned it into makeshift masks for the whole bar. It’s what heroes do.”

Not to mention Tony Leung as (I assume) the Mandarin! I’ve more or less checked out of the MCU, but that’s enough to get me to consider packing into a delta-filled theater.

Looks great. Shame I won’t be seeing it in the theater. No way.

am i alone in thinking this was a pretty lackluster trailer? makes the movie look really perfunctory and generic.

  • donchalant-av says:

At least, in this trailer, someone finally pronounced his name… even though it was the voice-over guy. It’s “Shah-ng Chee”.

  • ohnoray-av says:

dick don’t fit into daddies rings.

  • laylowmoe76-av says:

Seems like the movie will end with Shang-Chi beating his dad and taking the Ten Rings from him, thus gaining its powers. But y’know what I’d like to see? I’d like to see this movie feature the kind of superpowered kung fu that the wildest, craziest Hong Kong wuxia movies did in their early-’90s heyday. And in those movies, there were no alien artifacts that gave you the ability to fly or do hadoukens. You did that the old-fashioned way, by learning ancient wushu arts that tapped into your chi.I wish this movie was about Shang-Chi learning those arts and proving his father to be a pretender, who relies on fancy toys to do what real kung fu masters are supposed to do naturally.

  • RaoulRaoul-av says:

This trailer has Razor Fist! One of the most ridiculous Marvel villains, although he’s less ridiculous here. (In the comics, the blades on his hands aren’t retractable; they’re permanently attached prostheses that would make going to the bathroom a challenge.)It’s always encouraging when a movie uses the weird villains, although to be fair, Shang-Chi doesn’t have many recurring villains to choose from in the comics.

  • dr-memory-av says:

Am I gonna see Shang-Chi: Marvel Addresses the Chinese Market™? Yeah, let’s be real: they had me at Tony Leung.Am I gonna see it in a theater? Well, maybe Delta will have burned itself out by September and the other 60% of the country will have gotten their shit in gear and gotten vaccinated, but right now all signs point to: oh fuck no.

  • spookypants-av says:

You actually called the trailer “action-packed”? I don’t expect much from the AV Club lately, but this outright shilling for Marvel is really low.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

This trailer, like many films before it, makes a big deal of saying “You can’t outrun your destiny”. And you know what? I’m ready for a film where the protagonist does just that. Has a destiny, outruns it, becomes a commodities broker in Wisconsin.

  • rogue-like-av says:

Between this and the Venom sequel, I’m kinda stoked for new Marvel films. On the other hand, it sucks that I’m in upstate NY, and the closest cinema is a 30 minute drive to a two screener that -still-isn’t open. And the chances of them even getting either film is pretty slim, even if they were open for business. That said, I won’t step foot in a movie theater for at least another year because of, well, people.
