Sony acquires film and TV rights to Clue, might finally solve Mr. Boddy’s murder

1985’s Clue has long been the gold standard for movies based on board games. While the toxic thinking that led to the subgenre has added a handful of worthy titles to the game closet, most probably think of Battleship, which sunk the genre back in 2012. Very few end up as good as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves or Ouija: Origin Of Evil, and while there is a board game version of Jumanji, those movies are based on a book. So that brings Hollywood back to square one with Clue. Therefore, hot on the heels of Margot Robbie’s Monopoly (yeah, she’s staying in the toy aisle for the time being), Variety reports that Sony closed a deal with Hasbro for the film and TV rights to Clue, so the pair are likely bringing Colonel Mustard back to theaters.

Nothing has been announced yet, but few games translate to the screen like Clue. For one thing, there are distinct characters with names—not just a frickin’ thimble—and a plot: Find who killed Mr. Boddy. Clue fits neatly into a popular genre: the whodunit. One doesn’t need to stretch their imagination too far to picture a multipart streaming series that dives into the histories of each character and, perhaps, builds a motive and an alibi for them. Surely, Clue-heads are dying to hear more about Professor Plum’s college days. If they need more ideas, maybe they could consider watching the beloved Clue movie, which is not exactly crying out for a remake, but hey, if they’re going to make any board game a movie, it might as well be Clue.
