If you have a favorite incarnation of Spider-Man in any form—comics, films, TV series, games, whatever—chances are you’ll catch a glimpse of that version somewhere in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. The previous film, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, introduced the concept of the multiverse and parallel worlds. Now the sequel has taken that concept, multiplied it by the infamous pointing meme, and brought together an elite, interdimensional protection force called the “Spider Society.”

We don’t want to spoil any of the reveals, so let’s just say the creators (including directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, and writers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham) stuffed so many Spider heroes into it you may have to watch the film two or three times to catch them all. We’ll leave the background characters for you to discover, but there are featured members of the team you may want to know more about—either before or after you see the film. Read on for a handy explainer to help you get to know some of the amazing Spider-People you’ll be meeting.

In the opening sequence of Across The Spider-Verse, Gwen Stacy says, “Let’s do things differently this time.” We get a little of her point of view at the beginning, before the story moves on to Miles. Gwen, alias Spider-Woman, still hasn’t gotten over the death of her best friend, Peter Parker, who never became Spider-Man in this universe. Gwen’s father, Capt. George Stacy (Shea Whigham), blames Spider-Woman for Peter’s death and has been hunting her ever since, unaware of how close she really is. Gwen enjoys playing the drums, but can’t get along with anyone long enough to be part of a band. Miles was the first person she opened up to after Peter, and she ended up losing him too, when she had to return to her own universe at the end of Into The Spider-Verse.

My favourite cameo was Heung-Min Son in his Tottenham Hotspur kit.

“in her teenage years, calling herself Super-Girl” – I’m pretty sure that’s a different franchise…

This movie was so great. Visually one of the most incredible movies I’ve ever seen. With a lot of story and character, too. Expands on the first film in an interesting way. My only complaint was that it’s like, half a movie.

It feels a lot more like Infinity War than Dune: Part 1 though. I left IW eagerly anticipating the follow up, because of where they left it. But Dune was literally half a story and very much ended that way. Even though Across the Spider-Verse leaves things hanging in a big way, it still seems mostly complete.

It definitely feels a little incomplete, but I can bet once the final film comes out I’ll be satisfied. Infinity War ended on a down note, but felt like it told a complete story. In Spider-Verse, the villain is barely even getting started doing anything, most of the conflicts are between various Spiders-man.

I thought visually, it went a little too far toward the outlandish. The first movie nailed the look and feel, but this one seemed to have a need to expand on that, and at times it was a little headache-inducing.

It was a little overwhelming at times, but there were a lot of really nice visual things going on that I loved. I loved the visual distinctions between characters from different universes, like the Renaissance Vulture and Spider-Punk. I loved Gwen’s world and the color choices when she confronted her dad. The scene where Miles and Gwen are sitting upside down and looking over the city is one of the most beautiful shots in a film, maybe ever. During the scenes in the Spider-man “HQ” it could get a bit crowded, but it felt like that was the point.

Nah, I’m not even mad. I think it was an amazing cliffhanger (like the end of Back to the Future II).

The words I have to describe this movie are all clichés, but they apply: Amazing. Spectacular. SUPERIOR
Just, unbelievable. Oh my gAWD. I wanna see it again right now.

  • the-misanthrope-av says:

This is obviously not covering what I presume are going to be the many, many cameos, but I will be happy if…Spiders-Man shows up:Hostess Fruit Pies Spiderman shows up:(ETA:  Sorry.  I assume there’s a way to orient the text to the images correctly, but after a couple of tries, I just kinda gave up.)

Images and Kinja are like oil and water. Don’t you even dare to throw in a hyperlink. It will implode and take parts of your comment with it.

showing this post to me 11 year old son! he’s so excited to see this movie!once again, if you are an adult and you’re attending this children’s movie alone: it’s not too late to ask for help. you can change and grow as a person. it’s scary but there’s support out there if you know where to look. You don’t have to be this person anymore!

    • joseiandthenekomata-av says:

I’ll be seeing it with my adult friends in a few weeks.
But hey I’ll seek support if you do the same for your bordering-on-pathological obsession with people’s enjoyment of an innocuous movie. Because that behavior sounds pretty childish.

    • quetzalcoatl49-av says:

The idea that superhero movies are “children’s movies” died back in like 2008 homie. Kids who read comics grew up and now like to see current incarnations of them on screen for nostalgia.I have no idea where you have been for the last 20 years.

  • bc222-av says:

The best cameo was not any of the Spider-people, but one of the guys in the holding cells…

  • nilus-av says:

    Does Supaidāman show up?

The pause button is going to get a workout on this movie.

  • ryanlohner-av says:

If Pavitr sounds familiar, he’s Dopinder from Deadpool. Also, I’m pretty sure Oscar Issac is now the only actor to play Marvel characters across the MCU, Fox, and Sony.

    Spider-Pig. Spider-Pig. Does whatever a Spider-Pig does…

    No love for Peter Parkedcar?
