Oh Young-soo, the Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actor from Netflix’s Squid Game, has been convicted of sexual misconduct in South Korean court. According to The New York Times, Oh was given “an eight-month suspended sentence and ordered to attend 40 hours of classes on sexual violence.” The 79-year-old reportedly told press outside the courtroom on Friday that he plans to appeal the ruling.

A complaint against Oh from an anonymous female actor, with whom he worked on a play in 2017, was originally filed in 2021. The case was dropped, but the woman appealed to have it reopened, and he was charged with indecent assault in 2022. Though the case was sealed to the public, Deadline reports that he allegedly “hugged a woman and kissed her on the cheek.” Speaking to reporters in February 2023, Oh said he thought he “behaved badly” (via the NYT), however, he has denied the charges and claimed he only held the woman’s hand to guide her around a lake. Per Deadline, the judge stated that the accuser’s claims were “consistent … and appear to be statements that cannot be made without actually experiencing them.” Further, “What’s written in the victim’s diary, and the counseling report of the victim after the incident pretty much match the details of this case.”

While Oh first broke through in the U.S. playing the contestant Oh Il-nam in Squid Game, he is an acclaimed actor and stage veteran, appearing in more than 200 in his native South Korea (per the NYT). In the wake of charges being filed against him, Oh was dropped from the play Love Letter and South Korea’s Culture Ministry ceased playing commercials in which he was featured. His scenes have reportedly been deleted from Woo-seok Yang’s new movie About Family, and the film will replace him with another actor. He will not be returning for the upcoming second season of Squid Game.

“He will not be returning for the upcoming second season of .”Literally no one one was expecting this, seeing as his character is, you know, dead. Was there some big story about Season 2 having a bunch of Lost style flashbacks or something?

    • oodlegruber-av says:

Doesn’t have to be a “bunch” of flashbacks. Several shows have brought back a dead character for one flashback scene.

To be fair, when has death ever stopped a popular character from coming back? He’s got a secret twin! He’s a time traveler! He just straight-up faked his own death somehow! We go to the mirror universe, where the poor make the rich compete in death-games instead! Zombies! Etc.

Wasn’t season 2 suppose to be a prequel?

I didn’t realize at first that “soo” was part of his last name and thought the article title was emphasizing just how convicted he was

      This made me lol

Same happened to me but with a different order of the words so I read “Oh Soo Young” and was like conflating abuse with pedophilia and a little bit of DiCaprioism here.

Reading the title that way is probably the most korean comedy response you could possibly make. If only he had Duk in his name…. we could get him drawn as a duck going “Soooooo” at the charges as the header image.

I was kind of hoping that he was convicted because his victim was oh so young.

Deadline reports that he allegedly “hugged a woman and kissed her on the cheek.” My heart goes out to the survivor. Hopefully with therapy and the support of her friends and family she can recover from the trauma.

Jesus Christ, I mean I get that people should get consent before touching anyone, but this feels like a faux pas that deserves an apology, not eight months in prison.

well he admits “he only held the woman’s hand to guide her around a lake.” IDK how big that lake was, but surely it took some amount of time to go around it. I’d assume that, if she didn’t object to all that handholding, a hug and quick kiss at the end is not all that bad way to say goodbye.  but…whatever.

eight month suspended sentence, not prison time. it just means he needs to keep his, uh, nose clean for eight months.

I feel like it had to be worse than what was said here.

Well, it looks like he will not actually have to spend any time in prison, and is being tasked to attend the sexual harassment version of anger management classes.

Honestly, that does not seem unfair. Part of the problem seems to be that he is dug in on his belief that what he is being accused of doing by the woman is not even deserving of a sincere apology. If he has offered an apology, that would be good to know, but since he seems determined to appeal the ruling, I suspect that he feels he did nothing wrong at all.

If he showed remorse for his actions that probably would have made this go away, because just like in the U.S., I am sure that judges in Korea appreciate it when someone who has been tagged as doing something wrong shows a bit of remorse for their actions.

There is the case of that Jan 06 insurrectionist individual where the judge pretty much told him to his face that he probably would have received a much more lenient punishment for his actions if he showed any remorse at all.

This guy seems to be an established actor who would certainly know how to fake remorse, but he seems to not want to show any remorse, fake or real.

I get it, he feels it is beneath him to have this blemish on his record, but a judge thought otherwise and it seems it would just be easier to take his lumps and put this behind him.

If indecent assault exists, that means there has to be a thing as decent assault.

‘”He will not be returning for the upcoming second season of Squid Game.”’His character was supposedly near death and on his death bed in the first one anyway. There’s no reason they should have him scripted to return. Out of all the character plot threads that were left by the end of season one I don’t think they really need to extend his. Have the second season open with his funeral which judging by the way season one ended, would be fitting.
