There are certain Star Wars actors out there who have absolutely no desire to return to a galaxy far, far away, but Daisy Ridley is not among their number. The star of the sequel trilogy is set to return as Rey, Lucasfilm announced at its Star Wars Celebration in London on Friday. This major news comes alongside a lineup of Star Wars films for the next few years, some exciting new directors joining the fold, and a few tantalizing first looks at future projects (if you’re into that sort of thing!).

Regarding Ridley, Rey’s next adventure will be set 15 years after Rise Of Skywalker, in which she’ll “attempt to rebuild the Jedi Order as a Jedi Master.” The new film, penned by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), will be the first Star Wars theatrical project out of the gate since the trilogy concluded. “My heart is pounding,” Ridley told the London crowd (per IGN), “I’m very thrilled to be continuing this journey.”

She’ll be directed by Oscar- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), one of three new SW directors announced at the event. James Mangold (who also premiered the new Indiana Jones trailer) and longtime Lucasfilm staple Dave Filoni will also helm new installments. According to Empire Magazine, Mangold’s movie is about the “first Jedi to wield the force,” while Filoni’s is “a cinematic event” in The Mandalorian timeline about the “escalating war between the Imperial remnant and the New Republic.”

Elsewhere, fans got a taste of Ahsoka in a new trailer with Rosario Dawson as the titular character, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Star Wars: Rebels favorite Hera Syndulla, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren. The trailer for Jude Law’s series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew was also screened at the event, described by Empire as “Stand By Me meets The Goonies meets Star Wars.” Tony Gilroy was on hand to talk Andor, sharing a clip from the second season and revealing a planned August 2024 premiere.

Creator Leslye Headland also previewed her new series The Acolyte, which is set during the High Republic, “the furthest back in time we’ve been in live action,” she told the crowd (via IGN). “What I pitched to Kathleen Kennedy was Frozen meets Kill Bill. Shockingly, she didn’t kick me out of the building. … This is when the bad guys are outnumbered. They are the underdogs. I’m really excited for you guys to see things you haven’t seen in live action yet.”

All in all, one can expect lots of Star Wars in the coming years. And while the studio may have struggled to find its way forward theatrically following the sequel trilogy, it looks like the slate is finally coming together. May the force, as ever, be with you.

A best case scenario probably has Rey’s movie dropping around 2030, a full 15 years after TFA came out. Ridley still looks quite young at 30 (happy early birthday!), but I would be interested to see her weathered a bit as a world-weary instructor.

    • yesidrivea240-av says:

Man, time flies. TFA is already 8 years old!

    • darthpumpkin-av says:

The Star Wars galaxy has amazing skin rejuvenation technology as long as your name isn’t Obi-Wan Kenobi (see: Bo-Katan on The Mandalorian).

      • mackyart-av says:

Proof that the Tatooine desert sun was just harsh. Ben badly needed the 800 spf sunblock, while everyone in the Star Wars universe had amazing skin care routines.

    • aej6ysr6kjd576ikedkxbnag-av says:

She can begin every lesson with “well my old grandaddy used to say…”Or. God I don’t know, maybe they could… not?

    • dirtside-av says:

2030? 7 years from now? That seems a bit of a stretch. Presumably they’re well into the writing process by now, and if they’re taking their time (but not unduly so) then I’d expect pre-production to start later this year, filming in 2024, release at say Christmas 2025. Maybe 2026 if you want to give them a whole extra year for some reason. But another four years beyond that? It’s possible there’s context I’m missing, of course.

      • yellowfoot-av says:

I noted this downthread, but while this article reports that this movie is set to be released first, that’s not being reported anywhere else. I assumed from Gizmodo’s reporting that it would be the third movie, and while that’s not exactly confirmed either, The Guardian pegs the first two (Mangold’s and Filoni’s) as going into production, while this one is set to follow them. That could change of course, and I’m not holding my breath on any Star Wars movies until I see some actual evidence, but in the meantime I always feel like betting on The AV Club to have gotten something wrong is the safest bet of all.

        • dirtside-av says:

The real friends were the mistakes the A.V. Club made along the way.Anyway, yeah, I think at this point it’s both unclear what Disney intends and, even more so, what will actually happen (someone joked about seeing “Director leaves Star Wars movie” articles 14 months from now). I do feel that them making big splashy announcements at SWC is as close as you can get to “set in stone” short of principal photography actually starting, though.

      • jpfilmmaker-av says:

The context you’re missing is that this is approximately the 715th SW feature film they’ve announced, and since RoS, we’ve gotten exactly zero.  Don’t hold your breath on this one either.

        • dirtside-av says:

I was talking about the purported 2030 release date, not the general tendency of these movies to get put on hold.

  • Spoooon-av says:

Fascinating. Fifty-ish years on this planet and this is the first time I have ever reacted to news of a new Star Wars movie with a brief shrug and casual indifference. What a strange feeling.

    • erictan04-av says:

Yep, same here, and Kathleen Kennedy still hasn’t retired.

      • nilus-av says:

According to several idiots with mask on Youtube she is going to be fired and tried at the Hague any day now.  Of course they have been saying that for 6 years but I am sure they will be right this time

        • fanburner-av says:

I’m excited about all the Star Wars news. I am not excited about all the creepy misogynists who’ve already filled all the fanspaces today with their chest-beating.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

that’s a good thing right? the curse has been lifted?

    • delete-this-user-av says:

Just more churn, just more product. It’s sad, in a way.

  • bythebeardofdemisroussos-av says:

The sequel trilogy, Solo, Andor, and The Mandalorian have shown that Star Wars should be TV series only.

  • killa-k-av says:

    Meh.

  • pairesta-av says:

One of the saddest things to me of the new trilogy was seeing how burnt out and jaded all the leads were about it at the end vs how fresh and excited they were going in. It was certainly justified given alot of the toxic shit they had to put up with. But Ridley in particular; she gave the impression she was done with it all after TRoS. So it’s surprising to see her coming back for it.

    • recognitions-av says:

Her career hasn’t exactly been burning up the box office so it may be a case of catch as catch can

    • happywinks-av says:

      $$$ is a helluva motivator.

    • south-of-heaven-av says:

A few years of career stagnation will do that to you.

    • Spoooon-av says:

So it’s surprising to see her coming back for it.“I have never seen the film, but by all accounts it was terrible. However I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.”Clearly Ridley needs a new house.

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

so is this also a quiet announcement that taika waititi’s is dead and buried? we all knew it was coming but if they’re saying the rey movie is gonna be the first theatrical one back…

    • yellowfoot-av says:

I’ve looked trying to confirm that detail, but nobody else seems to be reporting that Rey’s movie is supposed to be first out, so I don’t know where Carr got that from. None of these movies have official release dates, and I get the impression that they’re supposed to be in sequence, though there’s little real confirmation of that either. IGN says both Waititi’s movie and Johnson’s trilogy are still up in the air, so my guess is if Waititi’s movie does somehow make it into preproduction, it’ll happen concurrently to one of these three, and Johnson’s trilogy would likely be tabled until after them. But I would guess that even if they’re not dead yet, both projects will be scrapped unless one of these movies brings Star Wars roaring back into cinemas somehow.

      • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

johnson isn’t getting a trilogy they’ve just been polite about it. even though i really liked it the consensus is that last jedi is Bad Movie and especially a Bad Star Wars Movie so i can’t imagine they’d ever let him play ball again.

        • fanburner-av says:

He was by far Kennedy’s favorite director to work with. He came in on time and under budget and made them a critically-acclaimed film. This is because he’s a good in-demand director who can decide for himself if he wants to deal with the trashfire that is the fanbase again after they bullied and harassed his actors off social media.

          • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Get Johnson to make a movie about a tough-as-nails bounty hunter played by Natasha Lyonne who bosses around a droid voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

          • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

oh i know all that. they also announced the trilogy BEFORE it came out, because they felt so strongly about how everyone was gonna love last jedi. they didn’t. i think if they announce they’re moving forward with a rian johnson star wars trilogy, now, their stock price takes a hit. it’s just not gonna happen.i say this as someone who loves johnson and the last jedi. the people have spoken.

  • eatshit-and-die-av says:

    Who the fuck cares

  • thegobhoblin-av says:

Rey deserves a better sendoff. I hope she gets it. I’m not sure if I’ll be watching when it happens, but I hope it happens nonetheless.

    • aej6ysr6kjd576ikedkxbnag-av says:

Rey? Not so much. Daisy Ridley perhaps deserved a better character, but it’s done and dusted. They could reboot Ep 7 with the same actors in different roles? That might work.

      • toastedtoast-av says:

I liked Daisy Ridley and the idea of the character being Rey Palpatine was fine, it was just underwritten and directed poorly. I did think the scene where she kills the Emperor had the classic dramatic Star Wars feel to it, with the Jedi force ghosts talking to her and whatnot. The movie around that scene was horrific, of course.

        • aej6ysr6kjd576ikedkxbnag-av says:

Yeah, mileage may vary. I couldn’t get behind any of it. Partly because I read the comic it was based on in the 90’s and recall thinking “this is so goofy trying to bring the Emperor back” and also “this kind of embarrassing storyline might fly in a comic book but thank God they’d never try anything so stupid in a movie.” The Emperor died once, and it was a great scene with all the dramatic beats it needed. And I think if Disney wanted to make a trilogy about the new Jedi, that was what they needed to make ten years ago, with whoever of the original case they could get. Instead, they remade three whole movies with substitute characters that were not consistent from film to film. Ridley had nothing to work with buy “sympathetic orphan”. John Boyega was given busy work for 2 1/2 movies. Why was Oscar Isaac there? Now, you could say of the original trilogy that there was no plan, to begin with, that who the characters were and how they related changed radically from the first film to the third. And you’d be right. The problem isn’t that Disney had no plan, it’s that they had no vision. They saw it as $4Bn invested with expected annual earnings that relied on them putting out movies. They rushed the first one, wanting to announce an imminent film to take advantage of the buzz around the sale. Then they rushed the sequels, because that’s what their accountants required. Two years between movies maybe works if you’re churning out Fast+Furious episodes. The Star Wars movies took longer, and where did Disney get the idea they could improve on that?Visually, the films were weak imitations – those colour filters will date them badly – and I can’t think of a single visual invention that would stand up to the creative level of the prequels or the OT. An imitation R2D2, only get this, he’s a ball! AT-AT’s only get this, they have knuckles! And appear at the end of the movie! An imitation Darth Vader, only get this, the mask is an affectation that people make fun of! An imitation Luke Skywalker (down to the costume that never changed through 3 movies) only get this, she’s a woman! It’s cringeworthy. Star Wars always embodied progressive values, but let’s not endorse a corporate cash-grab just because it apes the right cultural postures. And I know people will say, well what about the kids now, this is their Star Wars! Well kids now don’t much care about Star Wars, not like they did in the 80’s or even prequel days – Marvel is more the thing. Marvel of course, predates Star Wars by some way. But the people in charge care what they’re making. I still hear people quote the prequels – lines have entered the lexicon. I’ve never, not once, heard anyone use a sequel line in everyday conversation, they’re just too generic, too Hollywood-moulded. And now, having made three weak imitations of classic films, Disney think there’s an appetite for three whole movies more of these characters. This is the definition of failing upwards.

That’s pretty much the face I make when I hear of a new Star War coming down the pike.

  • bio-wd-av says:

Best wishes to Ridley, if I was in her spot there’s no way I’d be back after the legion of neckbeards spent the last decade saying western civilization ended because a woman was the lead character.  She has more resolve then me to come back.

    • kman3k-av says:

      Literally no one said that.

    • aej6ysr6kjd576ikedkxbnag-av says:

If I were her, I’d run a mile. But the problems with nu-Wars don’t originate with the actors, and the guilty parties are mostly male: JJ Abrams, Bob Iger… Rian Johnson didn’t cover himself with glory with his sophomoric effort, though it was the best of the three by some way.E7-9 were a bad idea, and doubling down isn’t going to fix it. Just sell it back to George Lucas for $1 and walk away.

    • argiebargie-av says:

Star Wars: Legion of Neckbeards would be a great title for a fan-made film.

    • vanheat-av says:

It’s not because she was a woman. It was because she was a Mary Sue woman who could fight and fly with no training and no charisma. You seriously liked this character?

    • bio-wd-av says:

I love how greys are telling me nah we didn’t hate her because she’s a woman, before getting annoyed and saying I liked the character.  I didn’t like the Sequels and I wasn’t the biggest Rey fan.  I just have something called empathy for the actress to know its not her fault and she got hit with a lot of abuse from online dipshits.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

yeah but think about if she dies.

No one buys toys now at days. If kids do watch it, I’m happy for them. But some of us are sick of this shit not because it’s not the same as before. But because they are making series after series for Disney to suck people dry and also because my god how can anyone think Rise of the Skywalker wasn’t shit.

I have desire to see them go do other things.I would be happy for them to throw away everything post Mando era. It’s been awful: movies, comics, books. Dump it.

  • disqusdrew-av says:

The Rey movie has a chance to be good and a real chance to “do something different” which they kept trying to claim they were doing with the sequels but didn’t actually do. Some of the other projects look fun as well and I’m looking forward to Ahsoka and the upcoming Mandoverse movie. However, I’m sorta bummed there doesn’t appear to be any projects set in the sequel timeline. Much like how shows like Clone Wars, Bad Batch, and Rebels really boosted the Prequels, I was hoping we’d eventually get some content to act as the connective tissue that those movies left out. I guess this is their way of saying “Yeah, we know it sucked. Let’s just move on and never speak of it. Hey, here’s Rey 15 years later so the stink has worn off!”

So they’re going to give Rey the story everyone wanted to see about Luke, instead of getting it all in 2 minutes total screen-time told in flashback. Got it.

It’s truly amazing that theatrical Star Wars films get made at all, since no one there seems like they’d be able to find their asses even with a map and a tour guide.

  • mackyart-av says:

I’m not happy the usual bottom-dwellers have emerged to shriek about this and make the fandom toxic all over again after we’d gotten ten minutes of quiet from their bleating, but I sure am delighted that they’re mad. 🙂

Wait, so you invent this new character called Rey with new powers and potential, and then have her do the thing Luke was going to do anyway? Then why kill off Luke in the first place if you’re not going to make a new story?!

    • fellowconsumer-av says:

Largely because Lucas wasn’t interested in telling Luke’s post RotJ adventures while he was stewing over the Kenner toy deal and waiting for them to slip up to make more movies that didn’t ultimately involve Luke, so Mark Hamill got too old. Even knowing you could do body double/age regression stuff nowadays.

      • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

Yeah, I know the reasons. I hate them, but I understand them.
I still think it’d be better if Rey got to have her own adventures and do something new, instead of being treated like a substitute for Luke.
