Supernatural actor Mark Sheppard recently posted a harrowing story about a health issue on Instagram (via Deadline), saying he just survived six heart attacks and that he died “four times.” In the post, which features a photo of himself in a hospital bed hooked up to some monitors, Sheppard says he collapsed in his kitchen and had “six massive heart attacks,” with doctors later saying he had a 100 percent blockage in his left anterior descending artery—a condition he called “The Widowmaker.” He says his chances of survival were “virtually nil,” but added that he now feels “great” and will be going home tomorrow.

Sheppard played fan-favorite demon Crowley for a good chunk of Supernatural’s run on The CW, and a number of friends he met on that show and elsewhere have left supportive comments on his Instagram post. One of those came from Misha Collins, the actor behind the angel Castiel on Supernatural, who joked to Sheppard that he doesn’t “need to do the most and biggest every time” and that “two or three” heart attacks “would have been impressive enough.” Collins then told his friend to “stop with this” and to “heal up.”

Felicia Day, John Barrowman, Devon Sawa, Rachel Miner, Matt Bomer, Jewel Staite, Michelle Gomez, and (somewhat oddly) the Los Angeles Fire Department all left nice comments on Sheppard’s Instagram. (He had thanked the Los Angeles Fire Department for its help in his initial post, but you don’t really expect a fire department to respond).

In addition to his memorable role on Supernatural, Sheppard is also known for popping up on Doom Patrol, Doctor Who, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, and (most recently) Walker: Independence—a spin-off of the show that Jared Padalecki went to star in after his time on Supernatural ended.

Yikes! One of my favorite actors, ever since he popped up as ninja space lawyer on BSG, and I’m glad to hear he’s doing better. His dad (actor W. Morgan Sheppard) lived to be 86, so here’s hoping Mark gets at least that long.

One of the all-time great “oh it’s that guy!” actors.

And in turn the son of a man who you can make a strongest argument was the greatest Hey, It’s That Guy! of all It’s That Guys ever to walk the earth. W. Morgan Sheppard is as far as I know the only person who can claim named speaking credits on Doctor Who, Star Trek, SeaQuest, Max Headroom and Babylon 5….but he’ll always be Mr. Reindeer to me.

Easily the best element of Supernatural, and almost anything else he’s in as well.

I like that Mischa Collins’ reaction was just, ‘That’s too many heart attacks. Get over yourself.’.

  • waitingfortheflood-av says:

How many times did he have covid?

    • fanamir23-av says:

This was my question as well. People still don’t seem to realize the damage repeat infections can have on your body.

No, “Just Let It Rip” was an awesome, brilliant, forward thinking strategy by corporate America and their servants in the the US govt.Kids in their 20s are having strokes and heart attacks, apparently in the gym, due to how weak the heart is after infection. We’re doin great.

He’s also recovering form a pretty bad case of skin cancer

Hey, you’re nobody until the LAFD comments on your Insta.

  • Mr-John-av says:

One of the best things about watching a TV show is seeing his name pop up as a guest, you know you’re in for something great regardless.

  • Mr-John-av says:

Also worth pointing out – he’s recovering from a pretty bad case of skin cancer too

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Good for him. He looks like he only had 7 or 8.

Bob: Very good. Very nice recovery, now how many heart attacks is that for you Todd?Todd: That makes a baker’s dozen for me.

You forgot his series-long run as Interpol agent James Sterling, Nate Ford’s sometimes nemesis/sometimes ally on Leverage.

  • ofaycanyouseeme-av says:

I might be one of the few people who actually watched Middleman, but Sheppard was good in that too. Seriously, how do you not like a show that does a whole episode in Escape From New York World??? I also like him as “crustier John Constantine” Willoughby Kipling.I’m glad he’s ok for now. Hopefully he masks up from now on.

    • bluemina-av says:

God, I loved Middleman. Such a bummer we only got the one season. Might have to rewatch that over the holidays!

      • ofaycanyouseeme-av says:

Yeah I’m gonna rewatch too. Natalie Morales is pretty great. It’s a bummer that Keeslar quit acting, but I’d rather he be happy

Always thought it was a shame that he didn’t return in Leverage: Redemption (I’m assuming the show is cancelled at this point). There was a point in the early 2010s where Sheppard seemed to be in every other show I was watching but most notable for me were Supernatural and Leverage.

    • boba-wan-skysolo-av says:

His character, James Sterling, should have replaced Nathan Ford as the mastermind in Leverage : Redemption. I never bought Noah Wyle in the role.

  • seven-deuce-av says:

Sheppard makes everything he’s in better. Hopefully, he’s good to go for a few more decades!

  • rockology_adam-av says:

Speedy recovery, Mark Sheppard. No mention of “Leverage” in his bio? I’m pretty sure he did more episodes of that than almost anything else pre-Supernatural, as a sort-of Big Bad and then redemption arc’d.Mark Sheppard is one of those actors whose face was just everywhere I looked, but never in the main role.  I like seeing him pop up.

Can someone more medically astute shed some light on what he means by six heart attacks? I don’t think I’ve ever heard one cardiac event referred to as multiple heart attacks in this way. It seems more common to phrase it like: I had a heart attack and X arteries were Z% blocked. Does it have to do with how many arteries were blocked? Or is it something else?

I’m a doctor.   You are welcome.   I would say this is a direct result of the COVID vaccine.   We’ve seen many such cases.   Sad really.   I wish more people would trust the science.  Bill Gates really screwed us this time.

    • insectsentiencehatesnewaccounts-av says:

My guess is they kept stabilizing him and he’d have another attack.

  • precognitions-av says:

I think after a while you just have to accept that God is trying to kill you.

  • disqus-trash-poster-av says:

“you don’t really expect a fire department to respond”On behalf of fire departments everywhere, I assure you, responding is a thing you can expect from them.
