When it comes to filming a nude scene, Sydney Sweeney has never, ever been happier than on the Euphoria set. In an interview for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Sweeney talks to Christina Ricci about shooting these moments—and she says that she feels lucky do so in the “safe environment” of Euphoria.

“I’m very fortunate that I am coming up during a time where there is so much thought in this process, and we now have intimacy coordinators,” Sweeney says. “I have weirdly become very confident with my body through Cassie.”

During Euphoria’s third season, Cassie finds herself in more than a few sexual scenes once she begins having an illicit affair with her best friend Maddy’s toxic ex-boyfriend Nate.

Sweeney also shares some insight into Cassie’s mindset. “[Cassie] doesn’t know how to communicate without showing her body,” Sweeney says. “That is a form of communication for her, and she was never taught that you did not need that.”

As the season carries on, Cassie’s intimate relationship with Nate grows isolating, possessive, and downright hard to watch. But behind the scenes, Sweeney says the process of filming was the exact opposite—she always felt supported and respected.

“We choreograph the whole thing,” she explains. “Sometimes there’s yoga mats that you can put in between each other. Or there’s like pads that you can put, or yoga blocks, there’s some weird stuff. And even if you have agreed to something, they ask you on the spot on the day, ‘Did you change your mind? Because you can.’ It’s really nice. I’ve never felt uncomfortable.”

Sweeney previously spoke to The Independent about playing Cassie, and expressed frustration that her performance seemed to lose validity once she disrobed.

“I’m very proud of my work in Euphoria. I thought it was a great performance. But no one talks about it because I got naked,” she said at the time. “I do The White Lotus and all of a sudden critics are paying attention. People are loving me. They’re going, ‘Oh my God, what’s she doing next?’ I was like, ‘Did you not see that in Euphoria? Did you not see that in The Handmaid’s Tale?”

I quite like this young woman. Dynamite actor, and it’s nice to imagine an attractive woman manouvering through Hollywood undamaged.

She never seems to bring up The Voyeurs when asking why her acting is not taken seriously enough, though that may be more a case of how many idiotic plot holes can you look past.

Because she, as an an actor, is responsible for the script of a movie she was in?

    • mdiller64-av says:

That movie had a wildly implausible third act, but she wasn’t writing her own dialogue – blame the director for the plot holes. Maybe you can say that she should have turned the project down on the basis of the script, but given how many scripts are rewritten during the act of shooting, even that would be iffy.

I kinda liked that movie.Though from what I heard, that was a less comfortable nude experience for her.I love Sydney Sweeney. She’s not really my type physically (which should matter not at all) but her acting is incredible.

Wow, imagine going to work and actually being able to ply your craft without abuse from staff or management. What a novel idea. Wish more jobs took note.

not see that in Euphoria? Did you not see that in The Handmaid’s Tale?”she was great in handmaid’s tale and sharp objects! i don’t know if i would put white lotus in as one of her better acting roles though. she does show a great range in euphoria but unfortunately her acting does get overshadowed by the unnecessary nude scenes.
just end euphoria at s2. the cast are all so busy and it takes longer to film 8 episodes of euphoria than a whole season of got because sam levinson never has a shot list.

Euphoria gets a lot of acclaim. I don’t think the explicitness of the material matters or is holding it back. But Zendaya is the main and her story is very big so of course it overshadows the rest. I like Sweeney a lot and she’s a great actor but “I’m not getting my due” seems to be recurring which I’d sympathize with more if she was at the end instead of the start of a long career.

Sadly, the history of Hollywood shows us that young actors/actresses get great roles make names for themselves and then the people around them start feeding their egos (basically so they can live off them) and their egos get so big that they start pricing themselves out of roles or start turning fans off because of how they present themselves. My guess is that she has people feeding her ego, telling her she is bigger than she is and more important than most but she just needs that one great role that will make her a household name, because she deserves it and just look what she has done, she should already be a household name. You see it far too often in Hollywood and in the history of it and those stars usually end up in the “where are they now” shows years later still crying how good they were and how they were mismanaged and never got that one big role they deserved or they end up playing parents of “kids” a few years younger than they are.

She really is a great actor. But I’m sort of sick of the Dead Eyed Vocal Fry Chick thing. I hope she can break out of that cliche.

    • akhippo-av says:

Just say you don’t like womenfolk talking instead of trying to bring back “vocal fry” bs. And since men are never accused of vocal fry, it is just sexist bullshite.

Could she have a nice long conversation with Frank Langella?

I don’t know, I don’t really find her performance in Euphoria to be that great. It’s a lot. Which is a different thing than great.

  • zwing-av says:

First – that’s great that the set made her feel comfortable. Second – given all the stories about Euphoria’s dysfunctional set, I wonder if all cast and crew felt similarly or if the director’s fave (and she clearly is) got special treatment.Third – that white lotus quote is such a silly strawman. Yes, the critically acclaimed show you were in that was made for adults was taken more seriously than the pulpy high school show. This woman’s achieved in a few years what few actors do in a lifetime. Unbelievably disingenuous to me.

  • bobfunch1-on-kinja-av says:

She’s got a little Francis McDormand look to her.

  • dmaarten1980-av says:

It’s such a damn shame as a society, that respectful and decent communication, what SHOULD be default on any workplace) needs coordinators because some assholes can’t control their animal side 🙁

  • thai-ribs-av says:

That’s quite a coincidence. Euphoria has also made me more confident with Sydney Sweeney’s body.

  • milligna000-av says:

She says that now. Wait 5-10 years and then we’ll get the real story.

  • caen2911-av says:

The methods of convincing a hot girl to get naked on film are better now guys! I’m not complaining, let’s just not pretend this isn’t what it is.
