Superheroes and celebrities have a lot in common, mostly because almost every current A-list actor in Hollywood has been absorbed into the Marvel or DC machine at one time or another. Yet Tatiana Maslany, who just finished up the first season of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law on Disney+, sees a more profound connection between the two.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Maslany is asked about her character’s debate with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) about superheroes’ right to privacy. “I can’t help but look at things from my own point of view. I’m sorry, but as an actor, what am I willing to give over? What is my responsibility to give over, and what can I keep for myself? Because privacy comes into play most when I do press or whatever,” the Orphan Black alum says.

“It’s that thing of, ‘Why would anybody want to know the details of me and my life, or think that taking a picture of me is something?’ There’s this whole other side of being an actor, which feels incongruous with the job,” she continues. “It’s so much about vulnerability and stepping into another character’s life and exploring it. So Jen’s conflict with privacy and Matt’s perspective on it are very different, but that’s where my brain starts to get sparky around it.”

Jen and Matt’s conflict is blessedly limited to the courtroom; outside of it, their characters get along well (really well). And the synchronicity extends off-screen to Maslany and Cox’s relationship, to the point where she’s petitioning for a role on Daredevil: Born Again. “I keep texting him being like, ‘Am I required for set today?’ And he says, ‘We’ll let you know by lunch.’ But he just keeps putting it off,” Maslany shares. “I’ve been waiting outside the set in my She-Hulk costume, so just put me in, coach.” You heard her, Marvel!

Hm. I can see subbing She-Hulk in to Born Again, maybe in the Captain America part? I really don’t know if Born Again is going to be based on the Miller books. I guess if it is they would just used Anthony Mackie as Cap so never mind. I suppose Jen could show up to assist in the courtroom.Basically, yeah, I want to see those two onscreen again.

Daredevil season 3 was already a loose adaptation of “Born Again,” so I reckon they’ll just be using the name to reference the series being rebooted.

You’re right, they’ve pretty much done Miller’s Born Again, or as much as they probably need to. That comic was always one of my favorite Miller runs, and as I get older it’s the only one I ever reread. (Dark Knight Returns was good, and revelatory, but… does not hold up for me. Not because of anything Miller has done or said since, just that we’ve had SO many Batman origins/reboots/reimaginings all over all media…)Anyway – I hope the yellow and red costume indicates a lighter tone for DD, as it seemed to in She Hulk. Because holy hell, Charlie Cox is funny and charming. I’d forgotten. (He was funny in Stardust, and charming in Boardwalk Empire…)

        It can be two things!

Have her show up to defend Milana Vayntrub’s Squirrel Girl in court in NYC.

So we can pretty much write off any chance Daredevil is going to stick to it’s grittier street-level Netflix aesthetic now, eh?

You should have known that the minute they announced it was on D+, hell the minute they said Daredevil was gonna be in the MCU… but like for real this time.

If you want to see a gritty Daredevil maybe you could try watching all the better movies and TV shows it ripped off.

    • mshep-av says:

Why do people keep saying this?

      • mamaneversleepsatnight-av says:

Because there is a firmly established style to the MCU, yes even the more ‘experimental’ iterations, and the style of the Netflix show was different.

        • mshep-av says:

I don’t know, man. MCU has managed to pull off distinct genre turns Civil War were straight up spy/action movies, and Cox has said recently that his Daredevil is the same character as before, and that No Way Home & She-Hulk just caught him in a lighter moment. It’s not unprecedented. And, honestly, not everything has to be gritty and street-level. The Daredevil comic had a phenomenal run in the late 80s were Daredevil was dealing with Mephisto, and it’s happened more than one once since. There’s even canonical comic book material where Murdock is intentionally leaning into having a sunnier outlook. It’s a thing that real people do, and it can make for good TV (like She Hulk!)

Civil War may have steered closer to a traditional spy thriller than say, Avengers, but both had a cohesive look and feel. The meta quips, Joss Whedon style back and forths, CGI spectacle battle at the end, social justice moralizing, etc. Wandavision was supposed to be experimental but quickly devolved into this same status quo before the end. I’d like to believe that there is space for a grittier street level hero in the MCU but I don’t think it fits into their marketing strategy which is what drives everything else. Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you SHOULD.

Sorry, I guess I was confused by the tone of your comment. When you said that we could “write off any chance Daredevil is going to stick to it’s grittier street-level Netflix aesthetic now,” I thought you were saying that that was a bad thing. I absolutely think that DD:BA will be the grittiest, street-levelest show to date in the MCU, and I also think that it will be less dark and gritty than the Netflix show. I also happen to think that that’s a good thing. The grim tone of DD and to a lesser extent the rest of the Defenders shows got a little overbearing at time, IMO.

Adapt the Waid/Rivera/Martin/Samnee run you cowards!

    Maslany was perfect.
I can’t wait to watch Daredevil: Born Again & moan every week She-Hulk doesn’t guest star!

They should put her in anything she wants to be in. She will always be a plus.

Regarding Daredevil on She-Hulk, I thought it was fine for what it was. It was great to see Charlie Cox again. It wasn’t his show, so it made sense that the character was more light hearted and even the brief fighting was less brutal and just cool looking. I’m cautiously optimistic about the new show. I just hope their idea of making Daredevil more fun and light hearted isn’t going to see the tone shift back to a 2003 version of how to make a dark and gritty Pg-13 superhero.
