If you’re looking for a break from December’s flurry of holiday content, Hulu can help. It offers a robust selection of recent critical hits—including a handful of films that have featured on The A.V. Club’s best-of lists—and crowd-pleasing favorites. Think of it as counter-programming for the Christmas averse. (By the way, Hulu has its own selection of holiday movies, but we’ll cover that elsewhere.) Here are 10 of the best non-holiday films to be found on the streaming service during the month.

Palm Springs might be the best movie on Hulu Cristin Milioti was so good in that (blows self up to demonstrate my love for her)

100%, except for the blowing-myself-up part…so 90%, I guess. Also, I can vouch that Swan Song is a good watch. It’s got a classic indie gay movie vibe you don’t see much anymore. And Jennifer Coolidge.

I remember watching Waitress alone while working (used to manage theaters) and pretty decisively not liking it. Does my memory fail me, or didn’t Keri Russell know the Dr. was married all along? Am I supposed to like a story about cheaters cheating? Keri Russell was appealing in an emotionally complex role, but I think a little too complex to keep the movie from handling it kind of clumsily. On the other hand, the writing, directing and acting were original and inventive for sure. I honestly didn’t know the backstory about Adrienne Shelly until now. How tragic. I wish we had gotten to see more of her work, and will give this one another look. Thinking back about it, I now suspect it might be better than I gave it a chance to be upon first viewing.

I always thought that in Hell or High Water they could have just sold the cars instead of robbing the banks and then burying them…

Re: Crawl, I loathe movies that demonize carnivorous animals for simply existing, and this movie better have a message like “humans are the real threat” because humans murder far more [insert “scary” animal here] for fucking trophies than those animals ever kill humans for simply food.

I wish Swan Song had a better ending bit, but otherwise very memorable movie.

I agree with Evil Lincoln that Palm Springs should go on this list. I’d also take Hustlers off…they sort of forgot to put in the point of view. This is going to make me seem really square, but, it’s kind of like I have heard Queenpins is: are we supposed to just root for women committing crimes because of girl power? Is theft and assault a yasss queen sort of thing? I think there’s a difference between “don’t judge” “root for the bad guy” and “this is because of the system” and Hustlers never picks a lane.I hated “Queen of the Earth” (it was one of a slew of extremely underwritten female-focused movies that were sort of mumblecore-horror adjacent but actually weren’t about much, like “The Midnight Swim”) (although somebody call me if they make an Emily Dickinson era haunted house mumblecore movie with Emily Hampshire and Lindsey Burdge wearing collars and lace ties) so I have delayed watching “Her Smell” not only because of the name but I am concerned it won’t add up to much. I will take the suggestion here under advisement.
