Yes chef! The Bear star Ayo Edebiri is the latest actor to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as reported by Variety. She’ll be appearing in Thunderbolts, a team-up movie featuring an assortment of morally flexible anti-heroes that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige describes as “a ragtag bunch.” Her role is currently being kept under wraps.

Back at 2022's D23 Expo, Marvel Studios unveiled a first look at Thunderbolts revealing the returns of Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster. While the number of characters in this line-up reflects the original six Avengers and Nick Fury, some fans immediately began wondering if the final product would also include some new faces, given the long-running history of the group in the comics. Louis-Dreyfus’ character was first shown to be recruiting a team in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and was recently revealed to be the head of the CIA in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Thunderbolts is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 26, 2024. The project is being directed by Paper TownsJake Schreier, who previously worked with Russell on the AMC series Lodge 49. Marvel vet Eric Pearson is penning the script after writing for Black Widow, Thor: Ragnarok, and the ABC show Agent Carter.

Edebiri’s stock has steadily been rising over the past couple of years, thanks to her work both on- and off-camera on shows including What We Do In The Shadows, Big Mouth, and Dickinson. Last year, she starred in the hit Hulu series The Bear, which has been renewed for a second season. Her film Theater Camp just debuted at Sundance, and she is also co-starring in the upcoming Prime Video comedy Bottoms, from Shiva Baby breakouts Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott.

I just rewatched The Bear, only made me love the show more. I’m curious to see her in a Marvel movie.

i don’t like making predictions like ‘this will be the one that breaks the marvel streak’, mostly because i do like the mcu and still watch everything…but this really seems like the one that noone wants or gives a shit about.i haven’t seen anyone express anything but disdain (or, at best, confusion) over jld’s character, it’s weird that this is essentially a sequel to arguably the least essential mcu entry AND how far away it feels from the comic book origins just baffles me. am i supposed to be excited about an 80 year old harrison ford maybe being red hulk? that’s it?
pugh’s great, i didn’t mind harbor as red guardian, stan’s always reliable, but this one feels like they’re trying to honor and end as many leftover contracts as possible.

    • thelincolncut-av says:

This is absolutely the dumbest take possible. Really, why did you even bother to share this? You sound like one of those absolute fools who predicted Guardians of the Galaxy 1 would be where “Marvel fatigue” finally caught up to them and ended the MCU. Do I believe the MCU will last forever? Of course not. But to predict a film with established characters will be the one that fails is just silly. You’re a silly boy. A silly billy.

      • genejenkinson-av says:

those absolute fools who predicted Guardians of the Galaxy 1 would be where “Marvel fatigue” finally caught up to them and ended the MCU.Woah now, Guardians Vol. 1 was an incredibly risky proposition when it was released so let’s not pretend like hindsight isn’t 20/20. It featured cosmic-side characters no one knew, a main star with more TV credits than leading man roles, a talking tree & raccoon and it was released in August, a notorious dumping month. If people were predicting it could flop, that’s because it was the prevailing opinion at the time and no one had any reason to think differently.

        • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

also noone was predicting it would be a flop! people were cautious, but there was a lot of faith in mcu even then.i’m not even predicting thunderbolts will be a flop, i just think it has an uphill battle and, based on what i’ve seen from mcu fans and normals alike, it isn’t exactly an exciting proposition. i think potentially this could be the straw that breaks the camels back, but it’ll come down to marketing, which was also gotg’s strongest asset. once that trailer dropped everyone shut up.

      • jgp1972-av says:

No, hes exactly right. Noone gives a FUCK about the thunderbolts. This shouldve been a shitty miniseries, not a movie, at BEST.

        • cropply-crab-av says:

Nobody gave a fuck about iron man in 2008. If they did Marvel would have sold the rights like they did with all their popular characters.

      • lilnapoleon24-av says:

Don’t be so cringe and infantalizing

      • ghboyette-av says:

He’s just a widdle siwwy boy!

      • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

well you’re obviously welcome to disagree but i think i showed my work.much like guardians, this will come down to a slam dunk trailer. but guardians was also 10 years ago and we’re in a very different media landscape. i personally don’t see much excitement or interest in this so far, and i don’t think kids are going crazy over more red guardian content.

    • stalkyweirdos-av says:

I mean, one never knows, but throwing a bunch of characters together and calling them Thunderbolts, despite the fact that they don’t fit into ANY of the multiple iterations of Thunderbolts (villains pretending to be heroes, reformed villains, government controlled but unrepentant villains, etc.), is definitely not helping people get excited about this film.A trailer or at least a proper concept might help. Might hurt, too.

      • bagman818-av says:

You seem to be under the impression that the general movie-going audience has any idea what happened (or not) in the comic books.

        • stalkyweirdos-av says:

No, I’m not. But since they haven’t explained the concept behind this team up, people looking for a reason to get hyped up (comic readers or not) would probably look to the comics legacy to get an idea. And then they would be confused. You seem to be under the impression that snark compensates for lack of insight.

          • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

yeah exactly, this is just black widow 2 and falcon and the winter soldier 2 put together under an unrelated brand name.

          • bagman818-av says:

My point being the vast majority of people (as in the people needed to make a $1 billion + movie) are barely aware of this movie at this point. When they get to the point they release a trailer and the marketing department goes into high gear, people will see “there’s a character/actor I like! Look at all the cool visuals! Hey, the fat guy in the red suit made a funny!”. Boom, job done. Also, China lifted the Disney ban, so this will do fine.

          • stalkyweirdos-av says:

Not sure what people who (1) don’t read the comics and (2) aren’t aware of this movie have to do with the conversation about how people who are aware of this movie are perceiving it.It almost feels like you aren’t interested in engaging what anyone else is saying.

          • yodathepeskyelf-av says:

His point is (1) and (2) are both such small numbers compared to the total number of eventual moviegoers that he doesn’t think the concerns of either group will have an appreciable effect on the film’s performance.

          • stalkyweirdos-av says:

Cool.  Since I’m not an investor, I don’t give a shit about that, and as a response to my comment, it’s inane.

          • yodathepeskyelf-av says:

I’m not sure that’s true, since your comment was a direct response re: the idea that this movie is the one to “break the Marvel streak.” Anyway, none of this matters. Happy Friday.

          • stalkyweirdos-av says:

I mean, if you want to pretend that my comment responding to a multiparagraph post was responding to the part it wasn’t responding to, sure, okay bro.

          • dutchmasterr-av says:

And fanbois “perceived” Captain Marvel from the moment Brie Larson was cast and the lead. That move still made over a billion in box office.

          • stalkyweirdos-av says:

I’m not sure what you should call those people, given that actual Marvel fanboys love them some Carol Danvers, who was possibly the most ascendant character in the comics in the decade leading up to that film’s release. Those people are just fucking dickheads.

          • cura-te-ipsum-av says:

Putting any Marvel film between Infinity War and Endgame isn’t exactly going to hurt now, is it? Let’s just wait and see what Captain Marvel 2/The Marvels does as a second data point first, shall we?

      • refinedbean-av says:

My problem is that Thunderbolts and other “kitchen sink team” things work best when there’s a diverse group to look at visually and see them interact, and most of these people are just variants of “super-strong person that can beat people up.” It’s going to be VERY boring unless they bring in something like Abomination, or focus heavily on Ghost, etc. They’re also including the MCU’s version of the bad Deadpool – fuckin’ “Taskmaster.” That should be left to wither on the rest of the Black Widow vine, which is easily one of the worst MCU movies, if not THE worst.

        • stalkyweirdos-av says:

There’s that, too. But also, Thunderbolts and Suicide Squad work best when it’s an interesting selection of otherwise forgotten, third- or fourth-string characters. Not just like literally everyone in a relatively small shared universe who doesn’t have their own film. That isn’t fun, it’s just housekeeping.

          • refinedbean-av says:

Agreed completely. Thunderbolts is a deep cut for a movie on the best of days, and honestly would’ve been perfect to introduce some new faces a’la Guardians of the Galaxy.

      • alliterator85-av says:

A trailer or at least a proper concept might help.A trailer…for a movie that hasn’t been filmed yet?

        • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

the presumption is that one day it will be filmed and that footage will be assembled into a trailer, yes.

    • strizo-av says:

People also said that about the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Eternals so… ya know… sometimes they work and sometimes the Eternals…

      • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I like how The Eternals is viewed as the MCUs mulligan. They have so much good will that we all just sorta memory-holed their first major fumble. That’s funny.

But seriously tho Brian Tyree Henry’s response to getting fitted for his super suit in the “Assembled” behind the scenes of Eternals is the cutest thing. I’ll literally carry any hope to see the Eternals return just out of love for Brian Tyree Henry. Phastos is my boy.

I realize he’s gonna lose to Ke Huy Quan at the Oscars but goddamn can everyone please check out Atlanta and acknowledge how good an actor this man is? At the very least see Bullet Train. This dude is a rising star.

      • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

i don’t think either comparison works for this one. both eternals and gotg were trying for wholely original, separate things that appealed (or didn’t) to a different audience.this movie is basically a sequel to a movie noone really likes and a series that will also get: another sequel via captain america 4. seems pretty difficult to go into this one fresh, which wasn’t a problem (as much) for either guardians or eternals.

    • tyenglishmn-av says:

I don’t know I feel like most people are going to see a zippy trailer with the funny woman from Seinfeld in charge of the sheriff from Stranger Things doing a Russian accent, Florence Pugh, the Winter Soldier, and a evil Captain America. Sounds like it will do fine

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

It’s pretty well known information that Sebastian Stan initially signed a 9 picture contract. I’ve seen interviews of him point blank stating that when he was hired he was told his character would become the second Captain America. This was back when Chris Evans was saying he was tired of the role and interested in shifting into director – a tone which changed after Winter Soldier’s acclaim. But call me crazy I think the original plan was for him to die in Civil War.

Sam as new Cap feels like a late game decision. And now it’s all “what do we do with Sebastian Stan”.

    • suckabee-av says:

Word for word what people have been saying about every single new post-Avengers movie since the first GotG.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

Dryfuss can be great, but I get “Blind Lawyer from Arrested Development” vibes from her character so far and that is ….not her being great. I could be totally off base but I think she may just know when to take a paycheck and not give a fuck. Hopefully she’ll try more when the role calls for more than being smuggled on set under a cloak for two scenes.

      • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

it’s not even her. i think she’s doing fine with what she’s given, it’s just that what she’s given is not particularly interesting, or in the case of something like wakanda forever, actively distracting.

    • alliterator85-av says:

i don’t like making predictions like ‘this will be the one that breaks the marvel streak’, mostly because i do like the mcu and still watch everything…but this really seems like the one that noone wants or gives a shit about.Because nobody likes a team of anti-heroes and villains forced to work together? Because nobody likes Florence Pugh or David Harbour? Because…what? Why would Thunderbolts be the one nobody cared about?Oh, because it’s a sequel to Black Widow. Except it’s not really, it just features characters from Black Widow, just like the MCU features characters from previous films in every other film they make. Sure, nobody is going to like that. Just like nobody enjoyed The Avengers.

      • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

i mean, there are examples of movies with a ‘team of anti heroes and villains forced to work together’ that have flopped and noone liked. there are florence pugh and david harbour movies that have flopped and noone liked.and yeah, i think being a sequel (it IS a sequel) to black widow, a movie that flopped* and noone liked, is not exactly a benefit. i also think comparing this to ‘the avengers’ is insane. *we can argue as to the technicalities of whether or not it flopped (the covid and direct to disney+ of it all), but it didn’t make much money and is widely regarded as, at best, inessential.

    • lilnapoleon24-av says:

There have already been multiple mcu films no one cared about that (relatively) flopped at the box office

  • fireupabove-av says:

She was also great in the first episode of BJ Novak’s show The Premise.

  • swilliamsffc-av says:

Ayo Edebiri is wonderful and great in everything, but her funniest and most important role will always be as the Third Boy in the Hollywood Handbook Podcast. Apologies to Tom Scharpling, but Hayes, Sean and Ayo together is always the best.

    • noisetanknick-av says:

Yeah my response to this news was “I’m happy for Ayo but I hoper she isn’t getting to big to put up with Sean and Hayes’ crap for an hour every 4-6 months.”

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Thunderbolts really feels like the MCU film that’s gonna outright flop.

Quantumania has been decided as the first MCU film Im not gonna watch in theatres (my town does not have a theatre it’s a one hour drive for me, the new Ant-Man was deemed not worth the drive). On the flipside tho I can’t wait to rewatch Wakanda Forever next week. But…. this still feels sad tho, like Im burying something.

This thing is only gonna be saved by drooling Winter Soldier fan girls.

    • jgp1972-av says:

weird, because quantumania is the only one ive wanted to see in the theaters since endgame, and i dont even care about ant man.

    • capeo-av says:

Quantumania is the film I’ve most been looking forward to since this phase was announced.

    • alliterator85-av says:

Thunderbolts really feels like the MCU film that’s gonna outright flop.Honestly, why? Why this film and not the dozen other films in the works? Why not Fantastic Four? Or Captain America: New World Order?

  • realtimothydalton-av says:

kevin feige: we’ll never run out of great stories to tell!also kevin feige: our next movie is suicide squad with no swearing and elaine from seinfeld

  • thepowell2099-av says:

Predict she’ll be playing some version of Jolt, the young idealistic superhero who joined the O.G. Thunderbolts not realizing they were all (spoilers) supervillains in disguise.

    • rphaga-av says:

That’s a good guess. I’m thinking Songbird myself.

    • greghyatt-av says:

I doubt they’ll change Jolt’s race when there’s so few Asian heroes in the MCU. Maybe they’ll genderswap Mach-I (-X)? Or run wild and cast her as Moonstone.

  • gloopers-av says:

MCU just absorbing all of the most interesting talent and for what

  • cscurrie-av says:

I wonder who she will be playing? There is still a drastic lack of existing black female characters at Marvel. Is she “race bent”? “gender bent”? Who knows. Who cares?I guess we’ll eventually find out who she is playing.  The original comics conceit of the group being secret villains probably won’t work now. I guess it’s better to have them as the “anti-Avengers” strike force who don’t play nice and who will assassinate if ordered.

  • alliterator85-av says:

    Prediction: she’s playing Songbird.

  • moonrivers-av says:

So, her role is under wraps because – if she’s going to be the living embodiment of Moon Girl – that would mean the inclusion of…

    • deusexmachoman-av says:

I really think you have to cast Moon Girl as young as possible, because the whole child supergenius angle is part of what makes that character click. Plus, there’s already a Moon Girl animated series set to be released fairly soon.

  • anathanoffillions-av says:

I’m sure she will be great, but I am a bit surprised by how floundery Marvel seems even after one full phase post-Endgame…it feels like they are test-marketing everything from scratch, and that if people really like someone from any of these films they’ll just throw them in the pot.  It also feels like they are dragging their feet…they are going to have to start actually filming some of these movies someday.  Plus, and I have said this ten times already, they need to even involuntarily inject Sam/Captain America with super soldier serum…Cap was already underpowered and babysitting hawkeye and black widow…great he’s got wings, but if they don’t work for three seconds that’s it, he’s dead.  I can see with Spider-Man losing a lot of his toys and Cap not even being super that they are maybe trying to slow down the power inflation where everybody can blow up a planet…and suspension of disbelief i mean they are “superheroes”…but seriously, Cap shouldn’t be able to like dislocate his pinky or throw out his back throwing and catching his shield.  With Thunderbolts, they must really think this director is going to Guardians the shit out this shit.

  • thepowell2099-av says:

Edebiri was so good on the first season of The Bear. People out here talking about J.A.W. but she’s proven herself the anchor of that show and it’s wonderful that she’s getting more career opportunities. I only hope she gets the opportunity to, y’know, act, which isn’t always a given with a Marvel CGI slugfest.

  • disqustqchfofl7t--disqus-av says:

Wait, is this why they ruined the end of Falcon and the Winter Soldier by inexplicably making Wyatt Russell Cap good while ignoring all of his crimes?
