Leading a mostly unknown cast, Rudy Youngblood stars as a young Mayan warrior living in an unspecified Mesoamerican jungle shortly before the arrival of Spanish conquistadors. Gibson and co-writer Farhad Safinia take their time in developing the low-key hunter-gatherer pacing and rituals of Youngblood’s enclave, from its friendly, rough humor to Youngblood’s relationships with his father, allies, and pregnant wife (Dalia Hernandez). Once Youngblood’s home begins to feel real, director Mel Gibson and Safinia destroy it: Manhunters descend, burning homes, slaughtering men, raping women, and largely ignoring children, then hauling the survivors off to a bustling Mayan city for sale and sacrifice. Ultimately, Youngblood flees, trying to escape his pursuers and return to his wife and son before they succumb to the protective trap in which he left them. From there on in, is just a primal game of murderous tag, Rambo with bone earrings and an alien dialect. []

Avon better not be shooting someone on Sunday.

Cool. Nothing problematic at all with Apocalypto. Of course Mayans were a just a race of psychos randomly torturing and slaughtering masses of neighbors until the christians came to save the noble natives.Nothing to see on AVClub’s social issues radar, there. Carry on.

Not saying you’re wrong about it’s treatment of the Mayan empire (although, being an empire they weren’t necessarily benevolent), but my take away from the ending was more downbeat. The protagonists spent an entire movie escaping only to see the arrival of people that were going to mean even worse things for them. I guess there’s the Mel Gibson factor, but if I remember it correctly I don’t think the movie supports your read.

The Conquistadors did destroy numerous indigenous civilizations like the Aztec and Inca, but the Maya collapsed all on their own well before Spanish colonization in a way that models our own society to an uncomfortable degree.

The Mayan remained independent until the early 20th century unlike the Aztec. This is probably because they had no gold.

There are people descended from the Maya who speak languages descended from Classical Mayan even today, but when the Spanish got there they had regressed to village life and their civilization (and written language) had already been abandoned.

There’s a ton of classic western tv on Amazon Prime . I’ve just discovered “The Rifleman” , and I’m hooked!

I have enjoyed Joel Edgerton ever since his role as Metal Beak in Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. No, but in all seriousness, I like him. I have never seen Warrior, nor did I realize he was so studly. I will be watching that movie.

    • redyetti-av says:

Warrior is pretty solid as a character study and decent as a film, but if you’ve ever watched MMA, the fight scenes are trash. It’s like pro wrestling with shaky camera work. Oddly enough, “Here comes the boom” is godawful, but the MMA scenes are some of the best in any film.

    • nemo1-av says:

That movie is pretty damn good. Nick Nolte has a great supporting role. It’s by far Tom Hardy’s best work but the fight scenes are great.

Crouching Tiger is my all time favourite movie. The grand scale , the lush silk road landscapes , the gorgeous intensely talented cast , all of them at the top of their game, a beautiful unrequited love and some martial arts too.

I wish amazon would fix the way they classify videos and work on their algorithm a bit more. Just because I watched a movie with a black lead actor does not mean I now want to watch Madeas shitty adventure. No, reality TV is not a documentary. No, hostel is not a comedy.
Prime video is great, but their algorithms and sorting suck.

Speaking of Black lead actors …The photo in this article tagged “Omari Hardwick” is actually not a photo of “Omari Hardwick”, but of another Black actor.I mean, come on AV Club!

    I love Apocalypto

    • breadnmaters-av says:

Mel Gibson is a right dick, but Apocalypto is an amazing film. I have never seen such successful use of visual storytelling since the old silent movie days. There are, literally, only a few lines of actual dialogue, yet there is never any doubt what is going on.

Oh look, it’s another “watch on Prime” list where most of the suggestions aren’t on Prime.

  • killa-k-av says:

Tomorrow Never Dies is one of my least favorite Bond movies with one of the best scores and action scenes in the franchise. That’s how stupid the “Rupert Murdoch as supervillain” plot is.

Aliens is an action movie. Alien is not.

  • leobot-av says:

I’m not clicking through all that, but I highly recommend Shadow. I just saw it’s up on Prime. I own it, but I’m going to watch it again. I find it surprisingly moving and the action sequences are quite enthralling.

  • jjdebenedictis-av says:

I really liked Coherence. The science fiction concept comes across subtly but nicely, while the humans get on with the task of being messy.

    • jjdebenedictis-av says:

Also, you can skip World War Z. It has some great looking scenes, but not a good story, and the solution for stopping the zombies was simply stupid.

    This is fucking pathetic.

  • PennypackerIII-av says:

How the fuck is The Handmaiden an Action-Thriller? This should be titled 20 random movies, available somewhere.  Most are not even on Prime.  What a joke.
