The best movies to watch right now on Netflix
Clockwise from upper left: May December (Netflix), Maestro (Netflix), Rustin (Netflix), Elvis (Warner Bros.) Graphic: The A.V. Club

This weekend’s Golden Globes ceremony marks the beginning of the final stretch of the 2024 awards season, leading up to the main event, the Oscars on March 10. If you haven’t had a chance to catch all of the nominated films yet, you’ll find contenders like Maestro, May December, and Nyad on Netflix right now, as well as nominees and winners from years past like Elvis and RRR.

On the other hand, you may prefer to enjoy a cozy night in and relax with something more fun or less challenging. Netflix has those kinds of films too. With more than 4,000 films in its catalog there’s bound to be something that fits your mood. Where to start? Consider this list—which includes insightful writing from expert A.V. Club film buffs—your go-to Netflix movie guide. Make your selection here before you settle in to hear that “tu-dum” sound—if only to avoid the indecision fatigue that comes from endless scrolling.

This list was updated on January 5, 2023.

Barry l Official Trailer [HD] l Netflix

The name Obama is never once uttered in Barry, Vikram Gandhi’s minor-key presidential origin story. Only in the film’s final few minutes does the title character even call himself Barack—and then only in his head, reading a letter to his absent father. Dramatically announcing that some sprightly figure is actually a famous person before they were famous is an especially hackneyed biopic convention, but Barry doesn’t avoid it just to stay out of ’s sphere of parody. It also does so because the young man we’re watching here—a smart, lonely college kid new to New York, and originally from “Hawaii, Indonesia, Kenya—you name it”—is decades and miles removed from the commander-in-chief he’ll one day become. He’s not President Barack Obama yet. For the modest moments chronicled, he’s just Barry. []

I just changed the URL from Slide 2 to Slide 73 to say, what the fuck, 73 fucking slides?  I get it, page clicks, but how many people are going to click through 73 slides?

    • signsofrainavclub-av says:

AV Club has really gone downhill since Univision but this clickbait website artifical pageview/click boosting bullshit is REALLY bottom-of-the-barrel. Shame on whoever approved this absolute travesty.

    • countglockula-av says:

It looks fine to me. Is this a desktop vs. mobile thing?

      • dr-boots-list-av says:

Yes, in mobile view Kinja renders slideshows as lists. You can force the webpage to view as a mobile device on desktop using developer tools in Chrome or Firefox.

    • treymarksthespot-av says:

I just did. I still have to go to work during this dang pandemic and I’m bored out of my mind. Keep the slides a comin’!

    • sybann-av says:

Someone told me this and I pass it along as someone else who hates the dickens out of this format too: IF you’re on a PC – make your browser window narrow and just like magic it’ll be a list you can scroll down

    • glorbgorb-av says:

I did. There’s some toward the end i had never heard of.

    • actuallydbrodbeck-av says:

I did the same thing.  I normally don’t comment on things that are not my cup of fur, but fuck, this slideshow bullshit is really infuriating.

    • ooklathemok3994-av says:

You can also shrink your window down closer to mobile and  the slide show disappears. Follow me on Lifehacker to find out how I block the 8 million tracking cookies that G/O Media drops on your computer.

  • nilus-av says:

Please stop with these fucking slide shows!!!  They suck

    • nomatterwhereyougothereyouare-av says:

      I also miss Disqus

    • lordburleigh-av says:

As much as I agree, G/O has LONG since passed usability, informativeness, and, for that matter, basic stylistic accuracy. The reason they do slideshows is because it makes for more ads. That’s it. They’re never going to stop.

  • nightsquirrels-av says:

I echo the comments about how slideshows suck. Also, why the fuck is a John Cater pic in the cover image????

  • backwardass-av says:

Like others, changed the url to skip to the end just so I could say fuck you and fuck the slide shows.

  • therealbruceleeroy-av says:

The Squid and the Whale is a sh!tty pretentious movie. Ill spoil the highlight for you- angsty preteen upset about bad parents jerks off in his hand and rubs splooge all over library books. Dont waste your time.

  • jaywalkingly-av says:

Please stop with the slide shows. You could have gotten 10+ page views from me at 7 movies a page.  Instead I gave up after 4 slides.

  • ghostyface-av says:

I read this on my phone and it was not a slideshow. It had too much Noah Baumbach, but was not a slideshow. I’m grateful for the tips; I’ll be watching several of these in the weeks to come.

I’d guess there are 200 movies on Netflix that deserve to be on the list instead of JOHN CARTER.  Like Moon, to name one.

  • phonypope-av says:

    Nope

  • umoon-av says:

    No Talented Mr Ripley?  Smh

  • rsqcom-av says:

0/10 No Police Academy movies on list. Would not click through again. /s Seriously though added a few to my waiting list.

  • FredDerf-av says:

I’m pretty sure your pic for HELL OR HIGH WATER is actually SLOW WEST.Also, slideshows are garbage.

    • stevengilpin-av says:

      I noticed that, too. WTF.

    • onearmwarrior-av says:

You are correct, Slow West is the pic shown.

    • ericd924-av says:

Came here to say this. Thank you! Also, both are Good movies.

    • specialcharactersnotallowed-av says:

Hello! I’m contacting you from two and a half years in the future to let you know COVID is still a thing, the former president still hasn’t conceded the election, and the picture from Slow West is still attached to the description of Hell or High Water.

  • schu-22-av says:

76 page slideshow are you shitting me AV Club?

  • mdiller64-av says:

Thanks for this – lots of good material for my Netflix list – but next time, could you link to the Netflix title page rather than the “watch now” page? In a list this long, it’s pretty ludicrous to assume that I’ll only want to watch one of the titles, and linking to the title page allows me to add them for later.

  • beverins1-av says:

I’d say The Castle of Cagliostro is also a must-see, if you’ve never seen it before, and even if you hate anime.

  • EricUmbarger-av says:

I normally hate slideshows but at least this one loaded fast.

Movies I agree with: Blue Ruin, Drive, A Ghost Story, Ex Machina, Inception, Limitless, The Lobster, Scott Pilgrim

Movies I disagree with: The Hateful Eight (one of the most boring movies I’ve ever seen), John Carter (really guys? This is the most run of the mill scifi’s out there. Absolutely nothing special about it’s story, acting, or anything else), War Horse (as someone who owns horses, this movie is absolute unrealistic, typical Spielberg “feels”, garbage

  • 4321652-av says:

Really looking forward to the list of ‘The Best Lists on Kinja’ list list.If I had any recommendations, it would be to make it really long, and require a separate click for each part. You should also have a brief summary of each list that is pretty redundant to mostly everyone. Lastly, I don’t think you’ve monetized your lists sufficiently, at least one advertisement per item, and one autoplaying video with the sound turned up per 5 will really bring it all together.

  • sonicyouth-av says:

    I’m done with this place

  • tap-dancin-av says:

Yes. The slideshows really take away from the experience of The AV Club – a site that popular, high-traffic online news sources still love to quote. Please. This strategy is not going to work 🙁

  • stevengilpin-av says:

The image for the page about Hell Or High Water (30/76) is a movie called Slow West.

  • breb-av says:

The takeaway from Green Room is if you’re in a punk band and you’re playing a venue in the middle of fucking nowhere, in a club full of skinheads, you don’t open up with ‘Nazi Punks, FUCK OFF’.

  • tape-av says:

Hey Jim Spanfeller:fuck your fucking slideshows and fuck you

  • xy0001-av says:

fuck whoever made the decision to do lists this way. fuck them to hell and back

  • actuallydbrodbeck-av says:

You know, the slide shows are one thing, one horrible thing sure, but whatever. But, 77 pages?  Really?  This is fucking ridiculous.

Den of Thieves is not a good movie. It’s toxic masculinity turned up to 11 and almost a parody. That being said, it is entertaining.

    • nomatterwhereyougothereyouare-av says:

It’s toxic masculinity turned up to 11 and almost a parody.

Wasn’t that like almost every action movie throughout the 80’s-mid 90’s? Sure they were cheesy but no less entertaining.

  • yeahthisname-av says:

Why is there a picture of Slow West for Hell or High Water?

  • Jezzerat-av says:

Frances Ha is absolutely wretched. This list cannot be trusted.

  • madamederosemonde-av says:

How come Eurovision isn’t on the updated list? It’s not a genre that everyone likes but it deserves a spot in this very long list.

  • rihannakarenina-av says:

The image for Hell or High Water is actually a still from Slow West, another great movie available on Netflix!

  • rds7-av says:

You expect us to click through 92 slides. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck that.

  • nothem-av says:

The numbering is all off if # 32 is, deservedly, The Guest (2014).

People, please minimize your window so the slide show can be scrolled down through. Please stop wasting discussion space complaining about slide shows.

  • jojokiki-av says:

http://www.dreambloger.comThank you for your recommendation, I want to collect it and appreciate it slowly.

  • bostonbeliever-av says:

Someone gave a hack in the comments on a previous slideshow on how to view the entire thing on one page. Can anyone help with that? Something about changing the aspect ratio? Maybe?

    • dead-elvis-av says:

Yep, narrow your browser window until it appears in list form. But this is a miserably fucking long list. Good luck.

    • protagonist13-av says:

On the first slide, you can click on “List of Slides” at the top of the screen and you’ll get the clickable full list of all the names of the slides.

    • qwedswa-av says:

You can shrink your browser window and it lets you scroll, but the pictures often don’t load.  At least it let’s you scroll down to get to the comments.

I just watched “Burning” because of AV Club’s recommendation. I *really* didn’t like it. I don’t know why it needed to be two and a half hours long; it meandered a lot. I like Korean films, and I don’t need all movies to be action and excitement, but holy crap is this one slow.

Slideshows are awful, they need to stop on this site.

  • theblackestcrow-av says:

why is this a slideshow?  stop doing this.  i am never going to read an article in this format.

The Lobster should never be viewed by any person for any reason.

  • joeyjigglewiggle-av says:

Randomly watched Den of Thieves last night. Tried half/reading half/watching, but it demanded my full attention (other than the completely unnecessary backstory of Gerard Butler’s home life). And it was pretty good! Fun heist, good action, and a nice twist that was foreshadowed just the right amount. But I would be remiss if I did not point out that all those fucking cops should be in prison for life for pulling their weapons and intentionally approaching heavily armed and dangerous criminals while completely surrounded by countless innocent bystanders in their cars. I get that’s part of it: the cops are the bad guys, too. But jesus, no mention of that decision, any reprimand, any casualties…not even a POV shot of someone from inside their car in absolute terror…just nothing? Everyone’s just kinda fine with it? Come on. All I could think about was holy fuck what if I was in the car with all my kids, what would I do?

  • kenrod-av says:

Uncut Gems (in the pic but not on the list, so I’ll comment anyway) sucked. Remove the f bombs and the movie is 20 min long.

  • mikeherrera-av says:

    Great options!
I´ll show them to my teenage brother so he has something to se on our way to Tulum in our Cancun Car Rental service.

  • rraymond-av says:

So we’re all still trying to pretend that Scott Pilgrim isn’t an awful toxic gaslighter of a character and the film has one of the laziest interpretations of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, that each new ex character brings a dose of slutshaming with it, there is no character arc so your title character ends up the same entitled dillwad he started the movie as…and it’s just not anywhere near as funny, charming, or clever as it thinks it is?

  • bobyroshanan-av says:

    Netflix is he best ott

didn’t realize this list was so old.  “american honey” isn’t on netflix anymore.

The picture for “Hell or High Water” (slide #48) is from some other movie. Can your proof reading get any worse?

  • Axetwin-av says:

Even though it’s not on the list, that museum scene from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off always makes me cry a little. Specifically that part where it just cuts back and forth between the one painting and Cameron’s eyes.(as a side question, why IS Ferris Bueller in the header if it’s not on the list?)

  • adogggg-av says:

This is the second list in a row where I go onto the streaming service and a majority of the movies on the list are…NOT streaming. Or behind a paywall.

Maybe because I’m in Canada. HELPFUL.

  • jpfilmmaker-av says:

Man, winning Best Picture doesn’t get you as far as it used to apparently, when its not even worth a mention.  (Referring to Argo, for those that don’t know).

  • jpfilmmaker-av says:

Oh, and wow, you’re literally just wholesale copying the write-ups from other listicles now?  I mean, I guess good on your morals for displaying it as such, though.  At least you’re being honest about how lazy you are.

  • nomatterwhereyougothereyouare-av says:

Cam was surprisingly subversive and disturbing. Highly recommend.I’ll never get the appreciation for Insidious. It was worse than The Conjuring, which is also a by-the-numbers jump scare/discordent violin haunted house/possession movie. I’ll give Insidious credit for not aggrandizing con artists and charlatans like Ed and Lorraine Warren.

  • actuallydbrodbeck-av says:

edit: just now saw how old this article is.Dropping in to say My Name is Dolemite is wholly enjoyable even if you don’t care about 1970s blaxploitation films or know who Rudy Ray Moore was. It’s a biopic completely by the numbers, but the performances more than make up for the stale pacing.
