Streaming libraries expand and contract. Algorithms are imperfect. Those damn thumbnail images are always changing. But you know what you can always rely on? The expert opinions and knowledgeable commentary of The A.V. Club. That’s why we’re scouring both the menus of the most popular services and our own archives to bring you these guides to the best viewing options, broken down by streamer, medium, and genre. Want to know why we’re so keen on a particular title? Follow the links for some in-depth coverage from The A.V. Club’s past. And be sure to check back often, because we’ll be adding more recommendations as series come and go.

For this edition, we look at the best TV comedies on Amazon Prime—which, given the acclaimed likes of Fleabag and Catastrophe and the sorely underrated Red Oaks, Mozart In The Jungle, and One Mississippi, has always the strongest suit of the streamer’s original programming. If you’re looking for more viewing options, here’s a list of the best TV dramas now streaming on Amazon Prime, and another of the best sci-fi, fantasy, and horror shows—we’ve got some picks for the service’s best movie offerings, too.

The further away television gets from 30 Rock’s time on the air, the more prescient the sitcom becomes—especially when it comes to all things NBC. Which is maybe the last thing anyone would’ve thought when it first premiered, compared to the series that was supposed to succeed, Aaron Sorkin’s funny-for-the-wrong-reasons Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip. However, Tina Fey’s absurd and quick-witted comedy lasted for seven seasons, created a television legacy, and spawned a comedic style and sensibility that made shows like and (the woefully underrated) work. It also left us with the greatest life advice possible: “Never follow a hippie to a second location.” []

Credit where credit’s due: on paper, no one seemed primed to be a one-hit wonder more than Diablo Cody. But she’s still got a strong career, and almost none of it leaning on the much-parodied style of Juno.

I would add The Grand Tour to that list.
    I
used to watch Green Acres reruns when I was a kid in the late 80s.
Funny show, with a great theme song. One of the few sitcoms from that
    era that is still watchable.

When is the Grand Tour returning?  Seems like it’s been forever.  Though their idea to ditch the audience now seems prescient.

Next episode is being finished up and the one after that is being filmed. No official release date yet.

“Green Acres” is absolutely brilliant. It’s like “The Beverly Hillbillies” directed by Luis Bunuel.

Tried rewatching 30 Rock. Maybe it is just me, but it isn’t as funny the second time around.

Morticia and Gomez were one of the great TV couples

One of my Trump theories is that he watched Green Acres as a kid and patterned his ideas of what marriage should be based on the show. Filtered through his abused mush-brain.

I guess I should finally check out Catastrophe.

We didn’t ask for a list of EVERY comedy on Amazon Prime, just the best. And quite a number of these are just woefully off the mark, like “Mozart in the Jungle.” Ugh…

Fucking slideshows. As soon as I saw that, I stopped caring what you were trying to write about.

Are all seasons of Community available? Just asking for a friend. Also, please wake me up when Mr. Ed becomes available to stream 😀

Scrubs is the best. One of the only shows I own on DVD, mostly in its entirety. I passed on season nine. I don’t hate it like a lot of people do but it’s pretty forgettable and season eight closes out JD’s story just fine.A problem the show has had in streaming as of late(I’m not sure if it’s currently an issue on Amazon) is that a big chunk of its music has been ripped out and replaced by what I assume are royalty-free songs. That takes away a bit of the emotion of the show as music was a big part of the storytelling.
