Grab your milk, put on your cape, and hide any aquatic invertebrates you may have lying around. At long last, The Boys are coming back for season four—and not a moment too soon. Spoiler alert for both The Boys season 3 and college spinoff Gen V, but things are looking a little dire for dear old America. Butcher has only months to live, Homelander knows he can get away with pretty much anything, and the head popper is heading to the White House. Shit’s fucked, to use more Boys appropriate parlance.

The first three (!) episodes of The Boys season four will premiere June 13 on Prime Video, with following installments released weekly. The eight-episode season will end July 18. (By the way, if you’re wondering, eight episodes is the standard length for a season of The Boys; this writer had to double check because it feels almost impossible that less than 10 episodes could generate that much blood.)

Season four’s logline reads:

[The] world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son and his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.

Last month, Prime Video released a short teaser that’s filled with as many mouth tentacles, chilling Homelander stares, new characters, unnerving political ideologies, and weird Ashley dominatrix scenes as you could ever want. We also get our first glimpse at newest Supernatural alum Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who is joining the cast in a still-undisclosed role that interacts with (at least) Butcher.

In addition to Morgan, Rosemarie Dewitt, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, Rob Benedict, and Elliot Knight are all joining the cast for the upcoming battle.

This is a fun show and a wicked deconstruction of superhero mythology. We can only hope for a Turner D. Century crossover. Of course, Marvel will have to get cracking and produce a TDC movie!

looking forward to it. Though: “The first three (!) episodes of The Boys” doesn’t require an exclamation point. It’s what they’ve done each season.

      thought i was going crazy.

Seems like Amazon’s general MO tbh. Peacemaker also dropped on MAX with the first three episodes. Frankly, I think it would be smarter for Disney+ to do double-episode drops. It worked well for Percy Jackson. I liked it for Hawkeye. *shrug*

Neat, looking forward to it. The show is generally more over the top and excessively silly than I’d like it to be, but it does do a pretty good job at ‘what if superheroes were real and they suck’. Gore notwithstanding, it seems like they’re sometimes trying way too hard to squick people out, sort of reminds me of a teenager a Hot Topic loudly complaining how much of a sellout everyone is.

Do I need to watch Gen V to follow season 4, or is being up to date on the show itself enough?

    • toolatenick-av says:

Without spoilers, I think you could probably pick up a lot of it through context, and I’m sure there will be a recap to get everyone up to speed, but the ending of Gen V season 1 ties directly into The Boys season 4. It’s not at all clear if Gen V characters will be in The Boys though(I’d expect cameos but probably not big parts), but the plot of Gen V will probably have a big impact on The Boys. That said, if you enjoy one you’ll probably enjoy the other. Gen V has a bit of a slow start but I quite liked it overall.

      • fireupabove-av says:

Hopefully context will be enough. I think I have spinoff fatigue, but the thought of veering off into a different show to understand what’s happening in the show I’m actually watching doesn’t appeal.

        • mid-boss-av says:

For me it’s not even spinoff fatigue with this show. It’s just fatigue with the world of The Boys in general. I can’t handle more than 1 season’s worth of TV in that world.

    • pinpoint999-av says:

I believe they have said it might provide more insight into S4 but doesn’t have to be watched

    • nell-from-the-movie-nell--av says:

Gen V is so fun. Do yourself a favor for that alone.

  • weedlord420-av says:

I know this show already gets a lot of praise but I gotta say it’s stunning how much better this show is than the comic it’s based on.  Like when I heard the series announced my eyes nearly rolled out of my head as I went “Ugh, really?” But now three seasons later, I find myself pumped.

    • marnercalgeus-av says:

Yeah, when the show first came out I was intrigued about the source material, then the more I learned, the less inclined I became to check it out.

    • dirtside-av says:

It’s the best kind of adaptation, one which not only suits the material to the medium, but also jettisons elements which didn’t even work in the original medium.

    • amcr-av says:

I enjoyed s1 and s2 because marvel’s pg13 fatigue was setting in. But s3 really felt like they were spinning their wheels, too afraid to shake up the status quo in a significant way. Let’s see how much they will make the stakes matter this time around.

  • pearlnyx-av says:

I can’t wait to see what they do to The Deep this season.

  • nell-from-the-movie-nell--av says:

I put off watching this show until last year, then tore my way through the first three seasons and Gen V, wrapping up about a month ago. I cannot believe the pre-existing fans have had to wait two damn years for this. Can’t blame a timeline like that on the strike alone. Just brutal spacing.
