The cast of Fargo season 3 is really taking shape, don’t cha know

When Noah Hawley’s TV adaptation of Fargo returns for a third season on FX sometime in 2017, its cast will include such nerdy notables as Michael Stuhlbarg, David Thewlis, Jim Gaffigan, Fred Melamed, and more. These actors will join the roster of already-announced cast members, including Ewan McGregor, Carrie Coon, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

The inclusion of both Stuhlbarg and Melamed in the roster suggests that Fargo may be making some nods to Joel and Ethan Coen’s other big Minnesota-set film, 2009’s A Serious Man. Thewlis has some Coen street cred, too, since he was giggly video artist Knox Harrington (a.k.a. “the friend with the cleft asshole”) in 1998’s The Big Lebowski. Gaffigan, meanwhile, has never worked with Hawley or the Coens before, but his slightly befuddled Midwestern sensibility seems ideal for a project like this. Other soon-to-be Fargo cast members include Scoot McNairy of Halt And Catch Fire, Karan Soni from Deadpool, and Thomas Mann, the “me” of Me And Earl And The Dying Girl. So, yah, should be a good one.

All of these fine actors will want to bring plenty of warm clothing when Fargo starts shooting in Calgary in January 2017. As already reported, McGregor will headline the third season in a dual role as wildly divergent brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy, one a success story, the other a ne’er-do-well. Stuhlbarg will play Emmit’s right-hand man, Sy Feltz. Thewlis will be a sinister-sounding “true capitalist” and outlaw named V.M. Vargas. And Gaffigan—for those who haven’t already guessed—will play a deputy at the local police department. Other than portraying a character based on himself in a show named after himself, this could be the role Gaffigan was born for. Murder, mayhem, and competitive bridge have all been promised for the third season of the show, based on the 1996 film of the same name, but no premiere date has been set, gosh darn it.
