The cat's out of the bag: Zoe Kravitz will play Catwoman in Matt Reeves' The Batman
Aux Features FilmWhile the casting for the Robert Pattinson-led Batman film has mostly been relegated to “early talks” or serious negotiations up to this point, today The Hollywood Reporter reports the first confirmed person to star opposite the Twilight alumnus. Big Little Lies’ Zoe Kravitz will be catsuiting up to take on the role of Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman.
As one of Batman’s classic foes and long-time love interests, Catwoman is one of the most complex supporting characters within the Caped Crusader’s lore. Kravitz won the role after a reportedly “rigorous testing process” that included Ana de Armas, Charlie’s Angels’ Ella Balinska, Eiza Gonzalez. Per Variety, filming could start as early as late 2019 or early 2020.
The X-Men: First Class star remains busy these days. After wrapping up her time on Big Little Lies, she took on a starring gig with the TV adaptation of High Fidelity for Hulu. She’s also had a bit of unintentional practice for her next big role: Kravitz supplied the voice of Catwoman in 2017's The Lego Batman Movie. The Batman is currently slated to swoop into theaters June 21, 2021.

Damn, I’ve really had my heart set on Stephanie Beatriz for Catwoman. Though I can’t really see her having much chemistry with Pattinson.
I would throw all my money at this movie if Stephanie Beatriz played Catwoman as if she were Rosa Diaz.
She mostly steals just to supplement her homemade jewelry making business. And the Penguin should be played by Jason Mantzoukas as Adrian Pimento.
There’s no way Rosa would ever dress as a cat without losing a bet.
Not that there’s actually a hardline between the two, but Beatriz acknowledged fancasting of her as Marvel’s She-Hulk and I could actually see that working about as well, if not even better. I haven’t really paid much attention to how tall she is but I feel like her Rosa voice is pretty much perfect for a She-Hulk and her natural speaking voice works for delineating any Jennifer Walters stuff. (Even though I think a lot of the charm of Ruffalo’s Banner/Hulk stuff in his last appearance is hearing a consistent voice come out of someone way larger.)
Maybe she could be Renee Montoya.
She could, but that doesn’t lend herself to making a sassy remark to Batman before backflipping off a rooftop on a moonlit night, which I have some interest in seeing Stephanie Beatriz doing.
It’s a different DC-verse, but Rosie Perez is Montoya in the upcoming Harley Quinn film.Still, Beatriz would be great as the Montoya who eventually becomes the Question.
Ana de Armaswas a contender and I could really see that
I also am envisioning this.
Eartha Kitt!Eartha Kitt!Eartha Kitt! That’s just for “those folks”.
Holle Berry tried that and she’s no Eartha Kitt.
Holle Berry is barely even Halle Berry.
I put a lot of the blame on Catwoman to the script and director. Halle could have knocked it out of the park if given the right tools.
All that squawking about Halle Berry…morons. Eartha Kitt indeed!I don’t know this tv show, btw, but – wow. What a face, what cheekbones, and an overbite – like Leslie Caron crossed with Gene Tierney.
Also Halle Berry to a lesser extent…
Yeah but Eartha dates back to 60’s.It’s even more impressive how little it mattered to audience and/or comic book fans.
I don’t know how people reacted at the time, but the several universes’ worth of more substantial differences between comic and show may have taken precedence. Anyone bringing up that argument would have to know there would be enough more significant changes to make them look like an idiot 1,000 times over.
I got a story about her and an airplane bathroom.
Well, that came up organically.
In this rare case, it really isn’t necessary.
Took me a second to work out what you meant. Then, sadly, reality came crashing in.
But can she purrrrr like Eartha? She had that all over Julie Newmar. As for the movies there was something about Michelle Pfeiffer. Though moreso when she was not in costume with her crazy hair and that not quite right look.
This casting choice is puuurrrrrr-fect!Get it?
*blank stare* Get what?
You know…it.
That was fun. Hip-Hop meets Metal?
It’s it!
I mean … PHWOAR! Eh? Eh? Nudge nudge.
Is your keyboard broken? That’s a lot of ‘u’s and ‘r’s in there.
What’s a “keyboard”?
Got it.
I understood that reference.
Aquaman/stepdad cross over perhaps!
Kravitz is great but I also fully support the notion of more Ana De Armas in anything. Poison Ivy!
Ana de Armas as Poison Ivy is a great idea. Let’s do it.
I liked Kravitz’ pointed performance in Mad Max.
Yeah, I went there…
I loved the Poison Ivy level in whichever Batman game that was. Super fun.
I approve of this… meow-ssage.
I’ll be making a Fe-Line for the theatre!
Why, I’m right on your taaaaAAAAAA-IL!
It’s a doggone great choice.Wait, am I doing this right?
*hiss*
I really loved Zoe Kravitz in Fantastic Beasts. Which was a shame, because JK Rowling seemed to really despise Kravitz based on how bad the writing was. Getting the Catwoman gig feels like fair compensation for her.
I’m not sure Jo knows how to write movie scripts. Maybe she should have written the stories out as mini books? Then worked on turning them into a script.
I hope she does the same thing she did in The LEGO Batman Movie and says “Meow! Meow!” before and after every line.
Kind of like Daniel Tiger from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood:“Mr. Rogers has his meow-meow up my meow-meow-meow!”
Did anyone make a “the only true Catwoman is Julie Newar, Lee Meriweather, or Eartha Kitt” reference yet? No? Okay, that.
Give me time, why the rush?“The only true Catwoman is Julie Newar, Lee Meriweather, or Eartha Kitt.”Damn, too late.
And why doesn’t Batman dance anymore?
In all seriousness Lee Meriweather was superb in the role. A pity she didn’t have more opportunities.
Julie Newmar is the best, also the best outfit.
I wanna see them do a sort of Joker style Catwoman movie where she’s a crazy cat lady. They kinda did it in Batman Returns, but I want the gritty reboot. Show all of the horrors of being a Catwoman. The fur on your clothes, the vomit in the hallway, the dead bird hidden somewhere in your apartment that’s slowly decomposing, the clawed couch. Chilling stuff.
“I always thought my life was a tragedy. Turns out it’s a LOLcat meme.”
The good news is that they can still pair her with a penguin…0F d00M!Yeah, penguin’s a girl now. Deal w/it. Also bi. Deal w/it. Also has a spork. Deal w/it.
And the iconic scene where she goes to a dinner and asks if she can has cheezburger.
As far as casting news goes, this is good as hell.
American cat woman, dur- dur, stay away from meee-ee! American cat woman, dur-dur, mama let me beee-ee! Thats my Lenny Kravitz joke everyone.
A cover of your The Guess Who joke.
On a somewhat related note, I rewatched Dark Knight Rises recently, and I really think Hathaway doesn’t get enough credit for the role.
She’s a lot of fun as Catwoman. Funny, sexy, clever, and I like the way she’s always wrongfooting Batman.
In true Nolan form, she is real-life catlike. The way she flips emotions on a dime make her more catlike than Halle Berry licking her paw. Hathaway goes from fraidy-cat to predator in an instant without beating us over the head with visual metaphors.
I always pretend she won her supporting actress Oscar for this and not for the execrable “Les Miserables” the same year…
As much as I think she did a good job as Catwoman, I would’ve loved to seen Rosario Dawson as Catwoman.
The only time the movie comes to life is when she’s on screen. I would sincerely argue that she was the best part of it.
She looks the part, but her acting is not all that great. She’s definitely improved, she was pretty good in Big Little Lies
The cat’s out of the bag…and it’s saying “Me-WOW!”
Other than being relieved that they cast a brunette, I have no opinion of this.
