The Crow has been resurrected, in both a literal and figurative way. The new trailer depicts the rebirth of Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgård), but it’s also the rebirth of the franchise. Brandon Lee played Eric in the 1994 film (and was tragically killed in an on-set accident), which spawned several sequels with different characters taking up the Crow mantle. 30 years later, in what has been described as a reimagining of James O’Barr, we’re returning to Eric and his quest for vengeance for his lost love, Shelly (FKA twigs).

According to a synopsis for the film, “Soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.”

The Crow experienced many iterations over the years in development before it became the version we see in this trailer. According to The Wrap, at various points, Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, and Jason Momoa were lined up to play Eric, and filmmakers like Stephen Norrington, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and F. Javier Gutiérrez were signed on to direct. Eventually it ended up in the hands of Rupert Sanders (Snow White And The Huntsman, Ghost In The Shell). “What drew me to this was the opportunity to make a dark romance, something that dealt with loss, grief, and the ethereal veil between life and death and reaching through that,” Sanders told Vanity Fair. “Look, I grew up listening to Joy Division and the Cure, and this movie is a bit like a Cure song—the beauty of melancholy.”

Sanders’ spin explores the romance between Shelly and Eric more deeply before the tragedy that tears them apart. It also includes a new look for Eric, which was inspired by the director himself “in the ’90s when we were squat-raving in London” as well as modern stars like Post Malone and Lil Peep. “I hope people who are 19 today look at him and go, ‘That guy is us,’” the director said. The Crow, which premieres June 7, also stars Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila and Jordan Bolger.

This looks Morbius bad, like they didn’t understand or care about the IP.They were gonna make their Goth John Wick with or without the veneer of The Crow.

    • esskhalredux-av says:

Seriously, the first thing that came to my mind when that scene with “Draven” and the flock of crows behind him came up was “It’s Morbin’ time”.

Nothing here tells me “dark romance, something that dealt with loss, grief, and the ethereal veil between life and death and reaching through that”.

I didn’t expect them to lean havily on the stylistic choices of the 1994 movie, but this looks like it’s got no style of its own ( I see a lot of borrowed things, like the title card and the short teaser that popped up yesterday having some strong “Hannibal” TV series thing going on) – and without any style of it’s own it’s just not that great of a story to be told thrice: once as a very moody graphic novel, once as a very moody movie that got the spirit of the graphic novel right, and now this…not very moody thing that seems to be “Death Wish” but with superpowers.

Of all the problems with a remake of the Crow, overnighting every shot isn’t one I expected.

    • benstl-av says:

It reminded me to purchase the original on blu-ray ASAP!  Haven’t watched it in over a decade.

    • drewtopia22-av says:

they did nail the “people only dress as the crow so they can look hot and hook up” part of things

    • jthane-av says:

This looks SO much more competent and appealing that Morbius on nearly every level, this is a surprising take.

I have zero interest in it, but given the angsty-goth-revenge-fantasy of the source comics, it looks like they’re being pretty faithful.

  • pocketsander-av says:

does it at least have a good soundtrack? The original’s soundtrack was way better than the film.

    • illustratordude-av says:

Based on the music from the trailer… no.

    • mrfurious72-av says:

I was pretty lukewarm toward the film, but man that is one of most awesome movie soundtracks ever.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

do they let movies have soundtracks anymore?

      • pocketsander-av says:

There was Barbie last year, albeit a themed one.Oddly, the Twilight films have very 90s-esque soundtracks where various artists contribute original songs that are quite a bit better than film.

  • bernardg-av says:

Eventually it ended up in the hands of Rupert Sanders (Snow White And The Huntsman, Ghost In The Shell)Welp. There goes my interest on this new Crow. The trailer doesn’t help the case either.

  • jlself-av says:

After seeing the new trailer, Lionsgate and director Rupert Sanders took the tone of #TheCrow and mangled it with awful music and a methy aesthetic that ruined any hope of me wanting the excellent #BillSkarsgard in a worthwhile adaptation of the source graphic novel. I’m sorry for James O’Barr. The original film and the source graphic novel are great pieces of art borne out of a real tragedy, (O’Barrs wife being killed by a drunk driver), which this reboot looks like it has become in itself.

  • ScottyEnn-av says:

Holy shit, this is like the most emo thing I’ve seen in over a decade.

  • libsexdogg-av says:

Hmmm. Well, it’s very pretty looking. They certainly put some work into this Crow DLC for John Wick.

… Hoo boy. It can still be good, though, right? Maybe? It’s only a LITTLE airborne.

  • kreegz-85-av says:

    WOOF

  • nx1700-av says:

    Looks like complete shit

  • srdailey01-av says:

Yikes. The gore looks sick but the rest of it is just too bright looking. I know they were never going to lean into the goth Detroit setting of the OG (or the orange LA vibe of City of Angels) but this looks DOA.

  • jrobie-av says:

What is she currently known as?

  • agenttalon-av says:

It’s not the 94′ vibe, which is a film I really enjoy, but I think this could be a fun one. I enjoy Bill and I don’t hate what others are calling the Goth John Wick vibe. If they get a solid soundtrack to go with it and just push the action side of things I think this could be decent. Now if the action is 10% of the movie and the rest is just Bill being sad and talking to random NPCs we have an issue.

  • Mr-John-av says:

Well, let’s hope the Highlander reboot is good! Also, is it love? Or is it actually anger at a world that’s taken it away, considering the comic was written in mourning for the death of someone. At least it looks like they might be adapting the Skull Cowboy, that could be interesting?

    • gargsy-av says:

It’s love “considering the comic was written in mourning for the death of someone” that O’Barr loved.

  • jasonzarling-av says:

Hollywood was so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t think about whether or not they should!

  • weirdstalkersareweird-av says:

    Nah, I’m good.

  • stalkyweirdos-av says:

Just when I thought we were all ready to admit that the first film wasn’t good, they go and make a new reason for people to champion it.

    • gargsy-av says:

      The first film IS good.

    • chrisschini-av says:

The original wasn’t good? Maybe you’re thinking of one of the sequels, because the original is a straight masterpiece and Alex Proyas is an amazing director.

    • jthane-av says:

Shh, it’s beloved, and besides Brandon Lee died.

    • Axetwin-av says:

It’s well cast, all the actors have fantastic chemistry, it has great action scenes and is chock full of instantly recognizable one-liners.  What’s so bad about the movie again?  It’s a superhero movie from the 90’s based on an indie-comic, it’s about as good as you can expect it to be based on that criteria.

      • stalkyweirdos-av says:

Nope, nope, not especially, and that is circular logic; the one-liners are only recognizable if you were young enough when this movie came out to watch it repeatedly uncritically and get caught with nostalgia for corny shit.Sorry; this is obviously subjective, but you’re making my point for me.

    • thepetemurray-darlingbasinauthorithy-av says:

Original must be pretty awesome if you like it.

    • nimbh-av says:

You need to ask the AVC before you can have an opinion?

  • peon21-av says:

Nobody’s answered the most important question: Is Ernie Hudson in this one?

  • freshfromrikers-av says:

When’s the Drinky Crow movie coming out?

  • scri66les-av says:

IDK Maybe I’m weird, but I’ve always like that The Crow stories (movies, comics, books, whatever) the tone and style and story are all pretty flexible. It looks like this one is emphasizing the kinds of damage Crow can absorb and heal, which is one of my favorite horror+super tropes and I might be on board for that alone. Plus I like Skarsgard. Is it opening weekend viewing? Nah probably not. But it still looks better than most other Crow adaptations.

  • chrisschini-av says:

My boy! What have they done to my boy!

The original is a masterpiece and this looks sloppy. I could be wrong, but now I just want to watch the original and experience it’s brilliance instead of seeing whatever this is.

  • boomerpetway-av says:

This looks like horeshit. Do not make a show about industrial goths and then play takingbackfuckingsunday in the trailer, or whatever that shit was.

  • batteredsuitcase-av says:

    And Sting just retired too

  • madoo12-av says:

Why do I feel like I just watched the whole movie? I really need to stop watching trailers.

  • brandycanan-av says:

“Running out of time to save her”…save her? She’s dead–or was in the originals. Yeah, hard pass. It’s the Romeo + Juliet BS all over.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

This trailer doesn’t suggest any of the morbid humour of the first one. Now, I don’t think a reboot needs to do exactly what the original did, but that sense of humour is a big part of why ‘The Crow’, which is a bit of a mess, works as well as it does. Draven has this weird court-jester-turning-on-the-king vibe that makes the film more interesting than a straight-forward revenge story. Without that element, I’m not sure it works.

  • warpedcore-av says:

In my opinion, it won’t work. The Crow was a 1994 movie with a 1994 vibe. It worked because of this. The tragic death of Brandon Lee sadly did bolster the popularity of the move as well.No David Patrick Kelly as T-Bird? No Crow movie.Dear Hollywood: Stop doing so many damn ‘re-makes’ and create some new, original shit.

    • nimbh-av says:

I’m begging you to listen to a podcast or read a book about Hollywood. They’ve never ever been about originality.
